truth. a righteous man shall fight the good fight in life. hallelujah.
NOW this.....
this is a good thread, friend. Nice work.
Ya dont need the bible to grow up to be a good person. That said I do see the value of giving kids at least a basic education in all the major religions of the world, but too many people would freak out if public schools added a class like that to their curriculums.

Preach!
Side note: if any of you would like some direction to primary sources on secular, philosophical works on ethics/morality see:
Aristotle, Nicomachean Ethics
Immanuel Kant, Groundwork for the Metaphysics of Morals and The Metaphysics of Morals
John Stuart Mill, Utilitarianism
If anyone is interested in such topics, these are highly recommended. But they are definitely not to be considered light reading, so grab a dictionary and a companion/secondary source for guidance.
Regardless of any preference of the 3 works, they will all cut through the bullshit that religion clutters up the water with.

Cool. Orange names mocking religion. Just when I thought NS was a safe place to share my views.

Supersymmetry is an extension of the Standard Model that aims to fill some of the gaps. It predicts a partner particle for each particle in the Standard Model. These new particles would solve a major problem with the Standard Model
There's almost no education on religion in high school, at least in Minnesota. I definitely think religion should be kept as far away as possible from education in terms of it's influence on what is taught in other areas (like health class). But it would be nice to have a general understanding of the major religions.

Religion was evolutionary. Everything you know is a lie.
It's all a hoax.
The bible is not true and can be proven false.

I can assure you that there is a God. God exhists regardless of what you believe, and he still loves you.

on the off chance youre not a troll, will you shut the fuck up please? this entire thread is retarded. you dont need the bible to be moral. In fact, i seriously hope no one actually does get their morals from the bible. as to "orange names mocking religion," are you shitting me? religion is a very powerful force on ns. a little bit of criticism doesnt do shit and is totally okay. remember all the homophobia on here caused by religion. i dont remember you getting pissed by that.

Since all existent things depend upon other things for their existence, there must exist at least one thing that is not dependent and so is a Necessary Being.

I love when people say something like that as a generalized point, even if it's not actually based on anything a person said or did, but simply based on something they perceive a person like that to do or say.

That is a theory not a proof. Of you want to bring that kinda stuff into it they're is also the theory that everything is caused by something and they're is not necessarily a single catlyst. Therefore the big bang could have caused itself. Infinite continium

So nothing always existed and was created by nothing because it's magic, and then spontaneously evolved from nothing into all the intricate pieces of our universe. We just happened to end up on a planet the perfect distance from the sun, with water and growing seasons that allow us to eat.
You could drop a bunch of 2x4's on the ground a billion times and and they're never going to build a house on their own. Even if there was something that magically existed how do you explain our universe as intricate as it is?

There are a very specific set of laws that govern this universe. Its funny how you would talk about magic when God is a magical man? So gravity is magic too? Also it doesn't just bam happen like that. I trust evolution and planetary compounding a lot more than everything magically existing in a week. Not to mention the fact that you can prove evolution.

I don't know man, the Bible does have moral codes that I think most humans can agree on. For example the command to "love one another".
I will put in in layman's terms for your better understanding, "don't be an asshole"
would you agree that this is a good moral standard for most people to live by?

I agree with most of the bibles moral codes. They are some pretty Damn good ones. But I also choose not to believe that the world was created in 7 days and that eating shellfish is a crime.

Not to mention that science proves new things and improves the human condition everyday. Christianity has the bible which granted has a lot of good things in it...but that's it.
In my complete expert opinion based on no knowledge apart from a year of studying to be a teacher. A school is meant to be secular. Therefore a public school can't teach the bible as if it's fact. You can have optional religious classes though.
As for prison. People often look for a purpose when there's nothing to live for. So they "find" god. It's the same for drug addicts and generally anyone who doesn't have something to live for.

We are allowed to criticize religion. It's not based on nothing. There have been huge amounts of homophobia on ns. Some examples are milkman, frenchy, cj and many more. Don't be stupid.

"I was an atheist at one time. And like many atheists, the issue of people believing in God bothered me greatly. What is it about atheists that we would spend so much time, attention, and energy refuting something that we don't believe even exists?! What causes us to do that? When I was an atheist, I attributed my intentions as caring for those poor, delusional people...to help them realize their hope was completely ill-founded. To be honest, I also had another motive. As I challenged those who believed in God, I was deeply curious to see if they could convince me otherwise. Part of my quest was to become free from the question of God. If I could conclusively prove to believers that they were wrong, then the issue is off the table, and I would be free to go about my life.
proof of God I didn't realize that the reason the topic of God weighed so heavily on my mind, was because God was pressing the issue. I have come to find out that God wants to be known. He created us with the intention that we would know him. He has surrounded us with evidence of himself and he keeps the question of his existence squarely before us. It was as if I couldn't escape thinking about the possibility of God. In fact, the day I chose to acknowledge God's existence, my prayer began with, "Ok, you win..." It might be that the underlying reason atheists are bothered by people believing in God is because God is actively pursuing them."
NikolausThe big bang
"Scientists are convinced that our universe began with one enormous explosion of energy and light, which we now call the Big Bang. This was the singular start to everything that exists: the beginning of the universe, the start of space, and even the initial start of time itself.
Astrophysicist Robert Jastrow, a self-described agnostic, stated, "The seed of everything that has happened in the Universe was planted in that first instant; every star, every planet and every living creature in the Universe came into being as a result of events that were set in motion in the moment of the cosmic explosion...The Universe flashed into being, and we cannot find out what caused that to happen."9
Steven Weinberg, a Nobel laureate in Physics, said at the moment of this explosion, "the universe was about a hundred thousands million degrees Centigrade...and the universe was filled with light."10
The universe has not always existed. It had a start...what caused that? Scientists have no explanation for the sudden explosion of light and matter."

Actually there are several theories, one being that there are some particles that may come into existence out of nothing. Besides, if God created the big band what created god
Word, so the bibles in school thing is a complicated issue. You can't teach it in the same way that a catholic school would, but there is objective value in learning about it. For one, it's arguably the most influential piece of literature in existence. Maybe some of the stuff in leviticus is laughable today, but maybe classics like "Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself." are worth teaching. Beyond the words within, no history class will fail to mention the church. Anyone who's taken European History will know what kind of shit the church pulled back in the day. Inquisitions, Crusades, the whole shebang. Shit's important, regardless of what you do or don't believe.
American public schools have kids who were raised with a bible in hand and kids who've never seen one. I feel that bible and other significant religious texts should be examined objectively in the context of history. Students should discuss and decide for themselves where these works fit into modern society and their lives.
