Okay, I'm going to make it clear right now. I do not have depression (at least, I've never been diagnosed). But I've been having a really bad couple of months and I just thought posting a thread would be the best way to get things off my chest. First and foremost, I got diagnosed with a heart condition that they said wouldn't allow me to ever really do anything that would get my heart rate up. So skiing. Secondly, my grandma died back in february. She and I were really close, and I miss her a ton. Thirdly, I passed out at a basketball practice and that's when I got diagnosed.. I know it could always be worse, but how do you guys deal with stuff like this?
Find an outlet or hobby that you can be passionate about and do it. Excercise is great but obviously you can't do that because of your heart condition. I'd suggest taking up something like photography or music. Life has its ups and downs, just keep living as happy as you can be.
stop being depressed, easy as that.
you have to take your mind off the shit that's bugging you, do something productive, it sucks that your condition makes it impossible to do sports but you can pick up an instrument, Piano is dope ! guitar is a girl pleaser. if music isn't your thing try drawing or stuff like that.
I fucking love golfing and it's not very demanding physically. give it a try
go out with your friend have a couple drink find some random honnies you can mack on, it will get better.
I had a friend who had Cardiomyopathy, so she wasn't supposed to do activities that got her heart rate up, but she still did some things like snowboarding, climbing, and slacklining.

That's what I have.

Music is quite easy to get into. Theres a lot of stuff online you can use to teach yourself piano or guitar or really anything. I taught myself how to play piano when I was in middle school. It's pretty cool to not need to be committed to lessons or anything like that. You can play what you want, when you want, and how you want. So it's really awesome. You can get a keyboard for a couple hundred dollars, or even cheaper if you know the right people. Music is pretty similar to skiing in the sense that you can be independent with it and you're free to do what you want. It requires a bit of focus, so I've found it good to really, really get my mind off things. I can just focus on playing/learning new shit and its really cool.
I hope ya feel better dude. PM me if ya need anything.
You said that you won't be able to go skiing, but not necessarily. Skiing doesn't need to be physically demanding unless you want it to be. Maybe you can't grind rails and hit kickers, but you can still have a good time. Sometimes I go skiing just to hang out with my friends. Get my mind off things.
I'd look into your options and see if any doctors in North America specialize in that.
My question is... if you didn't know you had it would you still go out an ski?
If yes, then why stop?
Look into hobbies, put forth the effort to go outside- even if it's for a little bit.
I struggle with it everyday. Having someone to talk to really helps.
art is a great way to lose yourself and stop thinking about the things that bother you. I obviously don't know your background in it, but if you don't think you're good at art anyone can be good with practice and everyone has to practice. i just say that because personally i always wondered why people were so much better than me and then i started actually doing it on a regular basis and i began getting better and better.
also you could try doing yoga or taking walks to places you like and reading a book or listening to music. i always find peace when i do stretches in beautiful places. developing your cooking skills.
you might need to do some soul searching to fully accept and deal with your disease, so these things might help you with that too.

Thanks guys. It's pretty amazing that this much support is coming from people that I've never even met.
cocaine.....
you ever thought about learning to draw or painting or something?
you can always do photography/videography and that'll get you back on the hill
-emile-stop being depressed, easy as that.
And this is exactly why people don't like being very open about being depressed. You are a fucking idiot.
-emile-stop being depressed, easy as that.
Yeah I'm sure the one million people that commit suicide each year can just flick a switch and stop being depressed.
This is a prime example of just how ignorant people are about mental health. Depression doesn't discriminate, it can affect anyone. (Robin Williams case and point) .
find a hobby to get into. cars, photography, filming, like painting, build model toys, you could get into LEDs and electronics and make some sweet shit.
I was diagnosed with depression 5 years ago now, but probably have been battling it for closer to 8. Additionally, it runs in my family with a rather nasty history on my fathers side. What I have noticed through all of our cases is that we find outlets, be it art, exercise, or any form of entertainment. Personally, I like to get outside, be it on a bike or in the woods on a hike. But other members enjoy books, gardening, or sometimes just drives in the car listening to music. What all these things have in common is the ability to make one forget the issues on their mind. It may only be temporary, but it helps. I know you cannot get your heart rate up, but have you thought about yoga?
Another route, especially with the death of your grandmother, is to talk to a therapist. If you are in college you most likely have a counseling service that you can approach. If you are at home, tell your parents you have been feeling down and would like to talk to someone about it. The therapist will have a better idea on how to handle your issues.
Most importantly, don't think of this as a social stigma. It is not. There are a lot more people out there who are depressed than you realize. Find something to be happy about and pursue it.

dude he said he doesn't have depression you are such a fucking idiot, I just said he should stop thinking about the stuff bugging him.
he's not actually depressed
-emile-dude he said he doesn't have depression you are such a fucking idiot, I just said he should stop thinking about the stuff bugging him.he's not actually depressed
"just stop being depressed easy as that"... Your comments reeks of ignorance and a failure of education. And pretty much everything wrong with the societies current stance on mental illness
Op said he's never been diagnosed but he's been sad the past few months. If he saw a doctor he would be diagnosed with depression most likely.
I'm never really open about my depression but just tonight I hit an all time low so this tread is actually pretty awesome. I can't really help with suggestions cause my out let just so happens to be skiing. I don't know if I would be able to handle what you're going through. I guess all I can really do is tell you I'm here for you and that you're not alone.
I respect you so much for starting this thread and I think it can be a huge help to a bunch of people on here just being able to see something like this.
And just remember, why be sad when you can be rad?
UglyboyIf he saw a doctor he would be diagnosed with depression most likely.
I am glad you are a medical expert who can provide this insight for us.
i feel for you man, depression sucks and not many people can understand what its like but its not something to easily overcome like everyone thinks (I've been there, trust me) however something i don't know anything about is having heart trouble
the activities i like to do either are super active (hiking, biking, running etc) or not active at all which are still just as enjoyable. i went fishing yesterday for 5 hours, didn't catch shit but i sat on the side of a river with a few friends drinking beer enjoying life and it was awesome! i went golfing last week, the most i walked was 10 steps to get to the green, the rest of the way i rode in a cart. there are activities out there to do its just gonna be different than what you are used to with your condition, just gotta accept and adapt to it which is a million times easier said than done but I'm sure you can do it.
last part- I'm sorry about your grandma, its never easy loosing someone you love. iv lost 3 friends from car accidents in the last few years and what i try to do is think about all the good times i had with them and how much they meant to me. right now i only have one grandparent left and i cherish her more than ever after loosing my grandpa and my aunt last year
life sucks sometimes, but challenges make you who you are. keep your head up
the strongest people have been through the most
SFBI am glad you are a medical expert who can provide this insight for us.
And everyone else providing advice on this thread is a medical expert as well?
Suicide is one of the biggest killers among men because talking about their feelings is "girly" so they attempt to treat their depression with running or any way other than seeking medical advice and talking about their feelings.

''failure of education''
lol you know so much about me.
-emile-''failure of education''lol you know so much about me.
I was referring to your level of education in regards to mental illness. You knew exactly what I was saying.
You had not real defence to your ignorance so you just tried to tried to nitpick one line

dude you have such an obsession with me it's kind of unhealthy,
my post was positive and helpful , I was just saying he needs to make his own happiness, you come in here and try to bash me like I said ''lol ur depressed go kill urself''
chill the fuck out with you white knight and social warrior persona

For once I actually agree with Emile, but I can see where you are coming from Uglyboy. The first line of that comment was kind of ignorant, but only if thats all you read. The rest of his post was actually really insightful and helpful. Even for people with clinically diagnosed depression, psychologists always recommend trying to find hobbies and productive activities.

No I quoted you because your original comment "stop being depressed easy as that" *was ignorant and everything wrong with societies attitudes towards mental health.
I've quoted you like four times? Because all your posts are so dumb
-emile-stop being depressed, easy as that. You can't just "stop being depressed." There is a big difference between sadness and depression. Sadness doesn't last that long and you have some degree of control over it. Depression is a mental illness that chemically alters your brain. When you have depression, your brain doesn't produce enough dopamine. It is scientifically impossible for someone with clinical depression to just "stop being depressed." The best you can do is treat it with therapy and/or medication. Please, educate yourself.
ESANDDo some oxy. You'll feel better in 15 min or so.
Holy shit dude, you’re soo cool
-emile-stop being depressed, easy as that.
Telling someone who is depressed, to "just get over it" is equivalent to telling someone with a broken foot to "just get over it".
OP I'm very sorry you're going through this. PM me if you ever want to talk.
-emile-stop being depressed, easy as that.
I tried to give you -k...but I guess you said something really fucking stupid in the past too.
-emile-''failure of education''lol you know so much about me.
Well, for starters, I know you're a fucking cunt.
Glad this thread got derailed. Does everything need to be an argument?
Chupa_ChupsTelling someone who is depressed, to "just get over it" is equivalent to telling someone with a broken foot to "just get over it".OP I'm very sorry you're going through this. PM me if you ever want to talk.
Not similar at all. Legs heal on their own without really caring about how we're feeling, but people who recover from depression do pretty much "just get over it"
Make a sequel to that movie crank. Instead of riding motorcycles off buildings and stuff you can knit with your cats while informercials play in the background.
Is there anything they can do to fix ya up? Not sure what level you have to avoid but just look for some other hobbies. Maybe go hiking and relax in nature. Getting some physical activity but nothing super heart pumping where it'll hurt you.
Can you just cruise groomers? I don't really feel like my heart rate goes up much when cruising but it's still fun.
Also, does that mean you can't fap? Because that's most peoples go to hobby.
go talk to the prettiest and nicest girl you can find and make her laugh.
Go eat some food that you can't help but smile when you take a bite.
go punch someone in the nuts.
go buy a video game off of steam and play it for eight hours straight and lose track of the time.
go buy some nice shoes or a shirt that makes you happy.
Go swimming or skiing or skateboard.
go for a slow drive and listen to some zone out music.
SFBI am glad you are a medical expert who can provide this insight for us.
You don't need to be a "medical expert" to know that. If somebody feels sad for more than 3 or 4 weeks, the most likely cause is depression. A quick internet search will tell you that.
Start playing ping pong, it doesn't require much physical activity. I picked it up last summer and to be honest I love it almost as much as skiing.
Hope things start going better for you homie
ESANDNot similar at all. Legs heal on their own without really caring about how we're feeling, but people who recover from depression do pretty much "just get over it"
wait so whats your point?
depression can be a real struggle no matter how much people want to 'just get over it', its not easy to wake up one morning with a complete change of perspective, recovering from depression can take time

Minus the fact that 'depressed mood' is one of the five criterium (out of nine) needed to get a diagnosis of 'Major Depressive Disorder' or depression.
I'm gonna touch off a couple things that were already said in this thread if you are in fact still reading these replies after it blew up. My parents got divorced and I've always had to deal with the repercussions of that. I finally admitted to being depressed when I was 16 or so and I went and saw a therapist. It helped me tremendously. I was never diagnosed with depression but we all know when it's not the way we should or want to feel. I would recommend confiding in someone you trust or an aunt or relative you're close to because it always helps talking about it to someone. There's nothing wrong with not feeling okay just remember that.
Whats good advice to tell my friend who claims to be "down on life" and cant even ski hes so upset? He just told us and its odd since hes a joyful and energetic kid ususally, I told him the typical "I got your back" but feel he needs further advice.

So basically here's how the doctors explained it. My condition has two types, obstructive, and non-obstructive. I have non-obstructive, which isn't fixable by surgery. I've thought about picking up golf. Not very demanding, but still fun.
