Thinking of building some rails on the side this season if I have time. Figured I'd make a feeler thread to see if there was any interest. Been thinking of doing it for a while but another thread reminded me.
Here's some stuff I've built recently
14' flat rails
32' flat down. Also the two 23' closed out flat rails in the background.
Some tube rails
Not sure what things would be priced but definitely reasonable. I know that most people just rock pvc stuff which is fine, hell I have a pvc rail from back in the day. Just figured I'd ask in case anyone wants anything built.
So I ended up moving to CO at the start of Jan and wasn't thinking I'd be able to do anything with rails. Ended up having some visa problems that are keeping me in the states this summer. Planning on driving back to the northeast in the next few weeks and hopefully getting some stuff built.
Was thinking of doing something like this for around $450.
This sketchup is a 16' flat bar made of 2" square tubing. Height is 1'8". Feet are 2' wide to make sure it's nice and stable.
I drew this one up without overhang on the ends, but I can put the first leg in farther, or throw some down kinks on the ends. I have to see what I can find for steel pricing when I get back east but that should be in the ballpark.
Would be able to do different sizes, different styles(round, rect), etc. The cost should change too much unless the style rail you want costs $$$ for materials.
Basically you'd be getting a rail that's skirted, has a bottom bar, and will feel extremely solid. These will ride just like the rails at ski areas because they will be built the same way and using the same materials. If you push some snow up against it in the winter it will be very stable.
I probably won't be able to build really fat tube rails because I simply won't have the ability to move the material around my garage. Going to be working by myself with a small shop, no overhead cranes or anything like that.
Would also be able to do custom rails. I won't be able to do bends because I don't have the equipment, and don't want to use lower quality materials to make the bends easier. If you really really really need one with a bend I have a friend with a large shop that I could probably bend some stuff at but I don't think I'll be doing any bending at the start.
Price will change if you want a kinked rails like aframes, z rail, flat up, etc. Honestly really depends on the materials and how long it takes me to build.
I'm not trying to get rich off these by any means. I just want to offer people a high quality product at a much lesser cost than everything else out there.
But yeah. If I can get healthy again and make it back east this should be happening. Already have some garage space worked out. We're going into summer right now but it's something to think about for next season(or maybe even something for the summer set up).

Sparknotes: I'm going to be building some rails. They're gonna be purty, sturdy, and your skills will get real dirty. So you should buy 1 or maybe even 20 of them because you know you want to.
Should be able to do boxes as well as I mentioned in the title. I'll have to see where my funds are for materials after I buy some new equipment. I might have to sell a few regular rails to get things a float before I start building any boxes.
Also not saying you should burn your pvc setup or anything like that. Just putting this out there in case anyone's interested.
If anyone knows of any northeast mountains(non profit or free preferably) that don't have a park or a good park I have been thinking a lot about using some of the money coming in to build some shit for donation. I probably have to sell a few things first so this doesn't go bankrupt before it starts but keep an eye out for some cool local ski areas that might be in need and message me if you find anything.
