So I'm brand new to touring. I have to do it this year for ski patrol avalanche work. Here are some questions I have: Can I use my regular downhill boots? Do skins have to be the exact same length as you're ski?

yes you can use downhill boots, it will be a pain on your feet though. skins do not have to be the exact length, but they do have to be pretty close. just go to your local shop and ask them what size skin you should get.

So, just wanted to share some stoke, we got out and hiked a zone we have eyed for three years now, found a bunch of gnarly stuff and some really fun lines, stoked to get back out there once snow has fallen!

Here is the zone:

We ended up hiking out to the third peak and dropping down to a lake below it, about 12 hours of hiking and scrambling on some of the steepest terrain I have ever hiked.

One of four chutes we found in the zone, some super fun lines out there, this one is steeper than it looks in the photo.

Now we just need to figure out the avalanche situation for this area...

Well first off I live in Las Vegas a local shop is nonexistent for these questions. The other thing is that I'm brand new to touring. I'm looking at touring bindings on evo and I'm seeing small and large and I don't know what that means. What does that have to do what ski patrol does? Thanks for answering my question tho

I just got my pro-deal set up with Dynafit. Any suggestions on what tech bindings to get? Other than the Beasts, they seem to be pretty similar, as best I can tell.

tomPietrowskiIf your looking for stiffer boots th salomons may not be for you. The quest max 130 is great and the custom shell is amazing but the shell material does make it softer. Even more so when they are warm so in the shop they will feel very soft but can stiffen up 15-20% when cold so more then most boots. If I was you I would look at the waymaker and freedom. The freedom can actually be fitted pretty big if needed but the waymaker is overall higher volume. I found the freedom a littke tight whereas all I need to do with th waymaker was add footbeds and a small adjustment to the boot board. The 130 version is pretty stiff no plug boot but really having a little more give in te boot will be good for free riding. I more often then not actually slightly soften boots for pro freeriders rather then stiffen as they like a little more movement.

I skied the quest max 130 last year and just bought the quest pro 130 for this year.

I'd say the stiffness of each is more into the 120 range, depending on temps. The quest pro almost a full pound lighter than the quest max in each boot. I think its going to be a much better touring boot.

The quest max also has a narrow profile (98 last vs 100 last). While they claim the Custom 360 Shell can be molded to add up to 6mm in last, that is not my experience at all. Plus, the wider you make the boot, the tighter it gets around your instep.

I have a wide foot and wasn't able to get the quest max to fit properly.

One last thing of note about the design. If your hitting big lines, be very careful of the walk mode. I've had mine switch into walk mode after stomping large cliffs (@ 20+ ft).

Good feedback on the boots. With regards to fitting the shell there are a few tricks. It's very easy to increase the volume it just needs doing I the correct way. Adding foam to the liner to push the shell can be effective as can doing indictable strenches somthing which can be easily achieved with the nature of the shell. I have found that the old max offered a good low volume fit out of the box but wit the right techniques could go pretty wide.

The walk mode issue is interesting I have not heard of this before. There were some other issue with the old design and have heard of the clasp on other boots getting caught on clothing ect but this is a new one. Have you had the mechanism looked at? It has a spring in ir so it may be that yours are worn out meaning the mechanism is not solid. The mechanism can be purchased as a spare and is fairly easy to replace.

I haven't personally used a MR backpack, but I live in Bozeman (where they are made) and they are most definitely the rage here. As far as I know they are some of the most legitimate backpacks made these days. I have no doubt they will hold up to what you put it through.

Yeah, the Dana Gleason makes the MR packs, which used to be Dana Designs. Hands down one of the best packs ever made. The Dana Designs packs are still floating around too, if you can find one.

I have an MR G5000 I've used for backpacking the past few years, and it's definitely really well-built. In fact, my family owns probably 10-15 backpacks from them, but we're also mostly in Bozeman, so it's pretty convenient because if anything breaks, we just take it down to the factory to get it fixed.

That being said, the price tag on all of their stuff is pretty proud, so I'm not sure if I'd spend the extra if I was outside of Bozeman and didn't have the luxury of quick, painless repairs. If you have the money, I'd say go for it, but if not--I probably wouldn't sell something I needed in order to make ends meet.

I enjoy my radicals and that new rad 2.0 looks like a nice option if you enjoy your knees and a little less pre release. It also tours flat ( if you care ) if you don't then the beast14 if another solid option if you don't need to 16 din of the og beast.

Used them in the past, never had any real problems and they didnt break.. They work fine if you set them up right and only for shorter non extreme tours.. Torsionally they are weak so watch out with steep traverses. They walk a bit funny because you stand so high above your skis, changing the risers must be done by hand and they weigh quite a lot and thats extra weight and room in your backpack, but in the end they got me to some fresh pow and cool zones a lot so yes I think they are great for you first adventures..plus you can find them for cheap..

Fine for what you're describing. The worst part about them is size & weight in your bag on the way down, not the way they work or how reliable they are. Set them up tight for the binding, go touring and enjoy.

Anyone have experience with the Radical Speed binding? I'm thinking of putting them on Elan Himalayas for touring on the east coast. The majority of the skiing would be on hiking trails all over the Whites, as well as chutes on the Prezis. I'm 6'2" 160lbs and would ski conservitialy especially on the hiking trails.. no hucking cliffs or anything. If anyone has experience it would be a big help

BoaxFine for what you're describing. The worst part about them is size & weight in your bag on the way down, not the way they work or how reliable they are. Set them up tight for the binding, go touring and enjoy.

i always felt the worst part is the extra weight on your feet going uphill step after step for the up
carrying weight downhill in your packs never bothered me other than that they
stride like ass
the stack height is like wearin your old ladies come fuck me pumps
and ive never seen to many peeps be able to snap off quick kickturns on steep switchbacks
bonus suck points for things needing to be strapped to you in avvy terrain
they are marginally okay for a one n done slightly better than bootpackin
unless the bootpacks in
They are also useful early season to make any rock ski a touring ski
having used them for a season i'd say don't spend more than hundo on em
they sell pretty cheap
prob cause they suck

I got son speed radicals last season on 187 hojis. I'm a big dude and they've worked out pretty well for me, nothing crazy of course. I have a duke set up as well that has served its purpose as well.

Mainly the price haha. But I think for touring on tight hiking trails, where I have to keep it smooth and controlled on the downhill, a lighter binding will be fine. I'm planning a few week long trips through NH where having a lighter binding would be important, so I'm leaning towards the speed.

And I am pretty fucking lanky and need to start gaining weight. Soon

I broke my Guardians, and have no other need for a new pair as I will only use Radicals to tour from now on. I sent the Guardians back into Skis.com for warranty, and they issued me about $350 in store credit. The problem is all of the skis on their site don't suit me as they are too small or are not what I am looking for. If anyone is planning on buying a pair of skis I could order them off of Skis.com for you and then you could pay me for however much they are (I'm cool with paying more than the $350 credit). By doing this I could get a pair that's right for me and you would have a pair thats right for you. It's a win win.

Sorry for the selfish post but a brotha needs a new pair of sticks.

I have a list with things I want to do (hut to hut trip, bivacco couloir trip, roadtrip dolomites, la grave) and the plan was to do some of that this winter/spring but now my girlfriend is going to live the winter in St. Moritz (Swiss) so I'll probably be there and have to find new objectives.

it looks like they have a bunch of 2015 stuff in already, but it seems like they should be getting more. i didn't ask though, but I most definitely can. the only timeframe I have is that I'd like to get some new skis before the season really kicks in.

Kind of going backwards in the normal progression but really Ski More pillows and shorter technical fun lines. Work on skiing good snow more often and make it less objective focused. Travel around bc a bit and maybe even dip into the states. Really depends on what happens with work over the next month or 2!
Though since I like to post pictures and wont totally give up skiing here are 2 lines I have high on my to do list but im not possed like some mountaineers so may forget about them who knows!

And a fairly exposed but technical line that would be a dream to hit if conditions align.

This summer I was in Italy in the Parco Nazionale Gran Paradiso to do bivacco trip with some mountaineering and glacier walking. I wanted to go to bivacco Malvezzi to check out the bivacco and area after reading a blog post from Luca Pandolfi. Malvezzi lays on the edge of a bowl surrounded by couloirs:

There are about 8/9 couloirs in that area, not all on this picture and even more if you go up and around the corner on the right.

Somewhere else in Italy, something for a 4/5 day ski touring trip. Two huts, two steep lines and some more terrain arround:

Im living in whistler for the first year, anybody knows if its possible to tour in october? if so in which area?

Not living in whistler can't give you an exact spot, but general rule of thumb for finding early season ski spots involved a lot of google earth time. Glaciers are extra sketchy this time of year with fresh snow just hiding not bridging crevasses. Look around for areas with summer pictures where there is still snow, usually can get a reasonable time stamp on ge from when the image is from.. find yourself somewhere thats not a total nightmare to get to and where there's a reasonable amount of snow to get nice laps in.

Also for whis it will probably depend on how the early season goes. if you get a shit ton of rain and not much snow its probably going to suck everywhere, if you get a big dump of a meter plus you can probably get away with skiing areas that have no year round snow.

Here is an example of a zone we found last year Oct first, while people where hiking and shredding grass patches and getting mad coreshots and only a few nice turns we managed to link up a nice 200m mellow zone for some super rad fun laps!!!
