Touring/AT NSers...

I've been noticing lately that there are a few people on here who are into touring and earning their turns.  Where are you from, where are you touring and whatchagot for touring setups? 

I'm from mass but tour all over the EC and also when I go west for vaca (usually UT/BCC/LCC).  Mostly in VT along the green spine though while I'm home.  Right now I'm on Whitedot Redeemers quiverkilled for Plum Guides, but my 12/13 ON3P Billy Goat Tours should be on my doorstep by tomorrow- and will be my go-to touring skis for the majority of the season.  My boots are Dalbello Virus Tours with cochise top straps grafted on as well because I hated the stock top bail. 

So what's up with you, oh rando beasts of NS?

there like a half skin, im thinking about throwing them on my old park skis with trekkers to make a makeshift spring touring setup.

ah the life of broke skier student haha


Used them before, good in fresh or slushy snow conditions, on harder pack and crust its possible to catch the metal tip and it drags in the snow. Climb pretty damn well as long the the steepness and side angle dont get to drastic. Great for mellow approaches!

A bunch of us spent a few nights at the Asulkan Cabin in Rogers Pass a few weeks ago and were super lucky with conditions - fresh snow just before we arrived but great vis and good stability the whole time we were there.

As well as summitting Young's Peak three times and skiing the headwall & Seven Steps area, me and two others managed to bag the Forever Young couloir on our final morning, enjoying some deep and very sluffy turns inside. We then had a seemingly endless run of pow turns from the fan of the couloir back down to the bottom of the tree triangle - it's insane the length of run you can get with fresh turns the whole way in that place.

Just went on a quick 2 day traverse deep into rogers pass. went up flat creek the first day and summited Mt Slick and then dropped into the N valley below, with views towards the Comstock couloir. Checked out Mt Dawson the Selkirks second highest peak. Wanted to hit this couloir on Mt Oliver but multiple bergshrunds and massive overhanging cornices made us decide it was best left for another time.

The next day we got up for the main event, Mt Smart. We had planned to do a sort of high ridge traverse but all the little things didn't quite work out for it. big cornice on access couloir so we just skinned up a drainage and then searched for an hour for some vis and a way through cornice to get down to the glacier below the main access couloir to Mt Smart.

lol wow this site never fails to fuck my shit up when it comes to posting pics and shit. 2 of every pic
top to are the access couloir with me just coming out of the choke. Next 2 is our route off the glacier, next 2 is looking down the line. you can see the rocky knob most of the way down and there was no way to connect to it from the glacier super trippy shit. So much fun though and one of the best shred experiences yet!

Visibility was zero when we got to the trailhead, and by the time we got out bearing we realized we were in the wrong spot.... whoops. Skied mellow corn, and figured out where to go next time though, so not a total loss

Shii no vis sucks. Was hunting for a firn snow patch in late september to go skiing for some early turns in a whiteout. walked around for about 10hours in this circular valley trying to find it we pretty much traversed the whole thing walked right past where we would be skiing, decided to climb up thinking we we're at it didn't realize we were that lost till we came up onto the summit ridge haha. luckily it was a straightforward bushwack out.

I've barely been able to tour in the past little due to knee probs but hoping i'm good to go for some Rockies spring missions now i've rested it for a bit. Let me know if you're up this way at any point.

Thanks man! Was probably one of the funnest runs I've ever had. Definitely want to get out on some rockies lines this year, funnel of death is kind of eating away at me, as well as pretty much any of the N facing ones on Temple. and the whole Louise group haha.

Thanks man was one of the best runs of my life, good vis fast turns and massive faceshots, and your sluff just runs to either side out you like your parting the waters and your fuckin moses.

Totally down for some Rockies action, probably start out this way pretty soon. Going to do a little recon drive up the 93n tonight actually and get some shots of the Funnel of death and some other stuff.

So far I'm absolutely in love with them, though as soon as I had them mounted the weather in Utah went to hell skiing-wise. 60+ temps for the better part of the last week. That said, even in slush and breakable crust I've learned a few things. Incredibly quick edge to edge. So light it almost feels like you don't have skis on your feet. Though as light as they are, they're surprisingly stable at speed- I've made a point to straight line them through some in bounds crud and they handled very well. As far as uphill/touring performance what can I say... I'm not used to passing anyone since I've been on Dukes for the last 3 seasons. On these things I feel like an uphill missile and pass damn near everyone in sight. The range of motion and the walk mode in the Dynafit boot are so much greater than what I'm used to. Hoping to get them out in some better snow once this next little system rolls through in a few days. Anything specific you'd like to know, just ask.

I've got similar feedback on the Converts as Yewtard. I've got the fiberglass version, so my skis are probably a bit heavier than his, but they still feel like you've only got snowlerblades on your feet. It's insane.

They aren't a hard-snow ski. They're awesome in pow, slush, groomers, and anything that hasn't got a whole lot of tracks in it. On variable resort snow and crud, they are pretty twitchy—it makes sense, since they're so light.

I have my skis mounted +1.5cm, which I'm really happy about. Though the tails are pretty soft, they still provide a solid landing platform. I haven't had a chance to huck into deep pow yet, but on small drops to steep hardpack / slush landings in the resort, they handle decently well. The tips are pretty soft, and they deflect off crud, but they are awesome in soft or untracked snow, which is most of what they'll be seeing anyway.

I've had one backcountry jump session to shitty snow on them so far, and they like to be in the air. They're super light and it was weird getting used to it, but you don't have to set spins very hard at all. I feel like I could bring 3s around on flat ground, and I've been doing them on the smallest little side hits without much trouble at all.

The soft tips are awesome for nose butters—you can really press into the ski and get a lot of pop out of it, without trying all that hard. I like nose butters so that's a good thing for me.


Overall, the skis are freakin' awesome. It would be awesome if the tails were stiffer, but mounting them 1.5cm forward of recommended seems to have done the trick. Stability at speed doesn't compare to my 194cm traditional camber charging skis, but they're shorter and weigh absolutely nothing. Although there is a speed limit in hard snow on the ski, it's great in soft shit and will be great as a spring/summer mountaineering ski.

I have them mounted with Fritschi Vipecs, which are my first tech binding. I haven't done enough touring on the bindings to give a review yet, but my initial reaction is that they ski damn well at DIN 12 and I trust them enough to nose butter. I have experienced the reported problem of the adjustable tech pin rotating itself loose, but a I called Black Diamond customer service, which was awesome and quick to make it right. They also told me that starting last week, all of the bindings are shipping out with updated toe pieces from a second production run that solved the problem. I'm not stoked that they weren't 100% reliable out of the box, but they offered to send me the updated toe pieces ASAP, so I'll post back when I get my new toe pieces in. I'm pretty sure the only difference is loc-tite and torque spec, but we'll see how they hold up.

A little off topic but is any one doing tuckermans ravine this weekend. im going with a couple of friends and want to know how the conditions are and stuff like that. I have checked the mt washington observatory and the avalanche danger reports but i cant find anything that looks that far ahead.

Awesome, thanks for the thorough feedback. I've got a pair of FT12's and Maestraeles, looking for a traverse setup, but would hate to sacrifice being able to have fun on skis, so I'm really liking the look of the carbon's/

Did you ever do something like this? I had something similar planned this year in France, although much smaller in everyway, but when I was there the base layer was thin and avy danger to high..(Le Grand Domaine, Roc Rouge couloirs)
6/7 routes that you can acces from behind, one where you need to downclimp through some rocks..



Also I highly recommend you this ski mountaineering movie from some crazy French, its really entertaining and they ski some sweet lines:

The only steep skiing film/edits I've enjoyed. No philosophical bullshit, just skiing for fun, as it should be. It's well worth the download, about €7 I think.

O and on another note, Was a few weeks ago but Greg Hill completed his goal of 100 000m in a Month(Counting UpHill Only) Pretty much skied 4 on 1 off with 14kish days. Also had to ski a different zone every time. Had pretty crappy conditions for a good part of it but still managed to hit some good lines it looked like.

Was drooling over the Funnel of Death whilst we were up getting granddaddy done - such a beautiful but gnarly line. Hoping for Aemmers soon, how long is the bootpack compared to Granddaddy vert wise? I've heard Aemmers is 650-700M but couldn't find numbers for granddaddy for comparison.

Aemmer was like 550m on the altimeter, measured from the fan. The approach is much longer though. We camped at Lake Annette and then headed up early the next morning. Could definitely be done as a day trip but just super early start. Coolie is pretty much straight North facing but there are some E facing cliff bands that hold a fair bit of snow that can sluff into the couloir when everything seems fine inside. I found bootpack on Aemmers a fair bit longer then Grand Daddy, looks like from google earth Grand Daddy is about 300m. So a little more then half of the Aemmer. The Aemmer has a steeper sustained angle and the top out is real real steep but i definitely recommend topping out if you can safely do so because the position is freaking amazing and the views are unreal. Took us 3 hours to bootpack up the Aemmer in good conditions but we aren't the fastest booters so could be faster.

yea if you do choose to do a camp mission. Camp on the far side of Lake Annette From Temple, Those seracs have way more range that you would think. We still got dusted and we we're on the other side of the Lake.

Looking to invest in my first pair of touring bindings
They'll be on 188 rocker 2 115s
I'm 6' 180lbs
Advanced rider, but not generally sending cliffs bigger than 20ft, i will be sending back country booters though.
I usually ride with a 6-8 din
Need something that will last at least 2 years.
Need something with a strong flat land setting, and steep terrain setting

Oh yeah, and since I am broke as fuck I will also be using these for pow days... Not only touring. So lets say I will be using these around 30 days a year, including touring

Any of the big three should do you fine. Guardian 13 . baron or adrenalin buy the one that's on sale. I skied my guardians probably 90 days from booters to resort to big mtn to touring . do yourself a favor and get a boot with walk mode, thats the key with these bindings

For serious?!?! How the fuck does 6-8 din hold a guy like you in place. I'm 5'10' 180 with all ski gear on and can't go lower than 12 without rereleasing.


And you should get the Adrenalins. The Solly/Atomic Guardian is not only the heaviest of the lot but has a few documented problems and I hate that they don't have a flat touring mode.

From central Michigan but spend most of this winter out west between Jackson and Vail. I have two touring setups, one is Armada TST with Marker Barons with Dalbello Lupo for mostly inbounds with slack laps. My other setup is Armada Norwalk with Dynafit Radicals FT with Dalbello Sherpa 5/5 for day long tours. Near the end of the season I was almost always going to my Norwalk and Radicals. They are so much lighter and better for touring with the lower toe pivot point. Plus don't let the minimalist design fool you. They can handle a lot! I am going to get rid of my Barons and just stick with Dynafits from now on.

Went on a sweet hut trip with a buddy of mine last 4 days, 40-60cm of new snow to play in it was pretty awesome. Conditions were fairly variable in places with ice chunks hidden all amongst the pow so you had to play it cool, still had awesome turns and got into some wild environments.

This was the favorite line of the trip, steep with a few dog legs kept you honest but made the whole experience super fun.

Skied 3 couloirs and a sweet col pow run the first day and then the second day my partner wound up getting sick so I went up and solo'd a line on the N face of the Sphynx. Epic deepest snow of the trip at the bottom but the upper section was ice, somehow convinced myself i could maybe ski it so climbed up it very gingerly due to lack of crampons. Ice wasn't super hard but it was an extremely uneven surface and was way to scary to turn on with the consequence of a fall being to high, I side slipped a bit but then decided downclimbing would be the safest option. Downclimbed to just past the crux and was able to ski though the second crux and then tear up some pow all the way to the bottom so fun!!!.

Well another day another line. went in to hit a classic route at Moraine lake, called 3/4 couloir or the 20 dollar bill couloir as there is a picture of moraine lake on an old $20 bill, its new name is $172 couloir as we kind of poached the road in with my 4runner before it was officially opened(couldn't let the pow go to waste) and as we came out at the end of the day there was a warden there waiting for us, why they drove up a half plowed road mid day on a Sunday I don't know but whatever it was worth it!!! Anyhow here are a few pics from the line, shes long 1000m from the lake with like 750 in the couloir. Not 2 steep though the top 10-20 turns were in the 50's most is just nice sustained 45ish skiing in a massively wide couloir, faceshots a plenty!!!

An expensive classic, beautiful and will make my job of cleaning the pit toilets at the lake all summer a bit more manageable!!!

Anyone familiar touring with 4FRNT Hoji? I'm thinking about pulling the trigger on buying them in 187' (im about 6 feet) for next season. Going to MSU in the fall and want something that i can do some day tours on and have some fun. Probably going to put Barons on them since i can get them for super cheap...time for lunges

I've had a couple of days on them. I really didn't like them on hardpack but once the snow softened up they were pretty sweet but didn't excite me too much. My friend who owns them loves them everywhere and said you need to edge them a lot on hard snow to make them work, so maybe it's a ski you need to get the feel of to appreciate it.

Thinking I'm gonna pull the trigger on the rossi Soul 7 (106mm) with tyrolia adrenalines, 180cm length. I'm 6'1 155 pounds and using them as my east coast backcountry slutspankers. I also like crushing bumps till I vom so hopefully they can stand up to that, too. If anybody has words of advice, encouragement, or utter disapproval please say them now before I empty my bank account, or forever hold your peace.
