I don't think thats really applicable, otherwise swimming would be an extreme sport due to the risk of shark attacks and tsunamis.

my list would be FMX->BMX->(Snowboarding->Skiing->Skateboarding)->Surfing
the things in the brackets are fairly similar in extreme risk.

i kind of agree. dirt biking is way gnarly, surfing is crazy, skateboarders bail so hard on concrete, snow isnt as hard

I would say bmx is the gnarliest. Falling on a bike is the worst fucking thing that can happen to you, you just get so tangled and fucked. And I would say skiing has a larger risk factor than snowboarding because your legs have free range of motion. They should be side by side at least. Skateboarding is gnar, but not as gnar as BMX. Fuck FMX thats not a sport.

what THE FUCK? Avalanches are totally relevant. I feel that my life embodies freeskiing and the #1 fear I have doing my thing is of avalanches. Also, the guy (Sander.) who said earlier that Elyes wasn't skiing at the time she was caught in a massive avalanche which killed three others last season near Steven's Pass was wrong. She was skiing. And Plake was on a skiing expedition. How about my buddy Chris Onufer and Steve Romeo who were killed in a big slide last year in the range I ski?

Tanner's injuries are one thing but what about the accidents involving the great Charles Russell? Sure we love to land in soft snow but we go really fucking fast and catch massive air while performing tricks in close proximity to rocks/ice/trees/metal/people/concrete/buildings. And then there's the white dragon: avalanches. (not to mention tree wells, crevasses, white-assed punk kids, and cougars!)

Even after all of this I am still more afraid of dying in a car wreck than anything.

Elyse was definitely skiing at the time. That avalanche at Stevens killed 3 other people, she was lucky to survive. Her abs bag played a large part in her survival.

I didn't even look at the list yet, but I can tell you that I've had too many friends pass away skiing this past few years at races, or from avalanches.

If you look at ski cross or alpine racing, people are losing their lives or limbs. Ski racing involves speeds up to 150km/h, and ski cross gets up to 80-90km/h over jumps with 4 athletes on course at the same time.  The Big Mountain extreme tour has seen 3 fatalities in the last 3-5 years as well.

From a medical perspective, injuries are categorized on priority/severity based on mechanism of injury. The faster your rate of deceleration/greater the height you're falling from the more critical the incident. Hitting rocks, fencing, trees or ice at 100km/h is just as bad as any car crash.

The dangers are different for everyone in skiing based on if they're skiing park, skiing backcountry, racing or just casually skiing groomers. Also their level of skill and ability, who they're with and the current conditions/terrain. There are so many factors involved, you can never fully remove all the risks.

What Elyse is skiing in winter is definitely more dangerous than your average park skiing.

i feel like biking should or at least could be number 1....i dont BMX but i have seen some serious shit go down for those that ride...you get torn up bad. they are falling onto concrete!

Surfing is fairly dangerous once you get to a certain level. Obviously with big waves, drowning or being held under for too long is the issue. Some of the best waves also break on top of shallow razor sharp reefs, so nasty cuts and other injuries can come from hitting the reef. It's probably pretty rare, but I've heard of people getting paralyzed from going head first into sand bars or shallow water also.

Also, this may be ignorant, but isn't skating more dangerous just because of the fact that a lot of skaters don't wear a helmet? I would think that if people have died from skating it would be from head injuries while not wearing a helmet.

Obviously that's not right. They did include a disclaimer though, not much data on FREESKIING data exclusively. Still, we deserve more respect than that!

they were up there to ski though i think. i'd say that counts as an inherent ski risk. and its ironic that skiing got the lowest rating, albeit for poor data but has the most famous fatalities on that list. SIP

skiing should be at the top, for urban. that shit is so gnarly. also, i'd say bailing on huge jumps (70+) and crazy rail features is also insane, plus big mtn is definitely only for badasses.

and DH mtb. possibly the most nuts sport out there.

So what you're saying is that skateboarding isn't more dangerous because it involves concrete? Surfing isn't a dangerous sport because you could drown and motocross isn't a dangerous sport because of the height of an air?

This list is stupid. Yes, it's stupid. Since when is "being tough" a measurement of success in action sports? The whole reason for participating in one of these outdoor activities is to have fun.

Not lol.... He fell 40 feet in the air to flat wood, and then got up and walked away. That could have broken his body beyond repair, or even worse. And then, only 1 year later, was competing again and stomped the trick that nearly ended his carer. Tanner's injury was intense, and the recovery process may have been more complicated, but Jake's fall is hands down one of the gnarliest in action sports, period.

I used to DH bike and raced a couple of times. It was pretty fucked up, this one guy fell and punctured his handlebar 4 inches into his armpit. On average there was one ER visit per race and that was a local race series. FMX has bigger jumps but if you fall hard in a rock garden you get torn up way worse. When I was younger I smashed my front teeth out on a dirt jump behind my buddy's house. I use those pedals that clip into your shoes and went over the handlebars and landed on my face still attached to my bike.

definitely should be on that list. But again it is quite a new sport (well it's classed as a new sport as it's only been around since the 90's)

How about getting pounded into the sea floor by literally tons of water if you bail on a 30ft curl?

Or maybe getting torn to shreds by coral reefs that lie under the surface?

Maybe you would prefer getting swept half a mile out to sea by violent riptides?

i dont surf much either but i live in cape cod for the summer and i think its because some of the waves they surf are very very very very powerful. I can't imagine. Ive seen videos of these waves and their huge:

i understand why people are talking about urban but its only at a v. high level that you start hitting really high risk features. i'm not a great skier but i have definitely skied many lines where falling is not an option! either serious injury or death! these weren't even that tech at all. just saying that big mountain is imo where gnarliest shit gets thrown in skiing

I think skateboarding is by far the toughest on that list. They didnt even include mountain biking, which in my opinion, is the gnarliest action sport of all time.
