From what I understand this was a "Park City at Midnight" selection at the Sundance Film Festival. But if you look at the statistics quoted in that trailer, 30 million Americans ski or snowboard (not sure on the accuracy of that, but it seems pretty reasonable). That's 10% of the country--a very large market for any film production to tap into. It seems they are trying to appeal to the weekend warriors, the once-a-year skiers, the gapers, really. And it will work. I bet anything that it gets pretty good reviews and is a box-office success. Something about it reminds me of Paranormal Activity. Could it be the low-budget horror film genre? Yes.

That said, the entire premise doesn't make sense and is downright stupid. But I'm sure it will be a commercial success. And it's going to cause controversy. I bet anything that come this film's release, news outlets are going to be crying for more "safety" on the mountain, on chairlifts, on trails, etc. Kind of like what Natasha Richardson's death did for helmet use advocates. I fear what will happen once this movie is released. No, I think we will see a good number of people clamoring for more on-hill safety--similar to the California bill that essentially proposed a law that required resorts to basically place pads on trees, clear other obstacles (like cliffs, trees, bushes, etc.) and anything that you wouldn't find on a groomed trail. Which is again, stupid. And really I'm surprised the ski industry isn't speaking out against this movie yet. It will be interesting to see what happens.

You're right; I'm misinterpreting the way that the media misinterprets the inherent risks in skiing. Because the media outlets weren't going crazy over the need for mandatory helmet use after Natasha Richardson's death. And they weren't attacking the industry's safety track record after the Quicksilver accident at Whistler, or the Teller/Ruby accident at Keystone. I'm completely wrong.

You mark my words; the media will have a field day over this--which will encourage even more gapers and weekend warriors to go and see it.

I'm not at all saying it looks like a good movie; the premise is laughable and really stupid. But overall, I think it's just going to cause more media misinterpretation of skiing's inherent risks and safety track record.

i dont think this movie will even make it to theaters. it will be seen by like 20 people when it goes straight to DVD. thats not really enough exposure for a massive media/public outcry for more ski resort safety...

so true, i never call last run it's either i'm skiing until get kicked off or i land what i'm trying.

once i called last run on my bmx, 30 seconds later i had a broken collar bone, still went to MacDonalds then to the bike shop before i though went to hospital, getting my priorities straight.

Love it.  The sad part is that people will actually get scared of lifts because of this shit.  Besides.  Don't they run the lift through all of the chair like twice after the last person gets on?

ture story this happened to a friend of mines dads friend. The lift stoped just like that when this girl went up to check out the top of the lift she jumped broke her back and crawled a quarter way up the mt to the top and then phoned in for help

ya. except this is realy nothing like jaws.  this would def not be as scary  cause its not real. If it ever happened, I'd be cold, but it wouldn't be the end of the world. Ski patrol would come eventually. ITs not real!!!

But...I'm still going to see it!

claim: i saw this being filmed last year in UT.  they had a really cool fake chairlift set up that was like 100 yards long but the chairlifts got smaller and smaller the further down the line they were so it looked like it was super long. 

It was filmed at snowbasin in like marchish.
