that makes absolutely no sense. if you can go braindead after 2 to 3 seconds of no blood to the head I have a hard time to believing that your brain can survive for 20 minutes with no blood. unless you died being hung from your ankles

depends on what you consider dead. I consider death when your brain is dead so you cant have a brain living any amount of after it has died.

If you mean the moment your heart stops beating then your brain will stay in working condition for about 4 minutes then start to deteriorate (brain cells dying) until it is completely dead 16 minutes later. so although you are right that your brain dies after only 4 minutes but it is not an instant process and the final death is after 20 minutes.

your brain does stay "alive" after your heart stops, but causes irreversable damage after 3 or 4 minutes, after that you might as well not wanna be recussitated, you become a vegetable

yeh the accepted number is 4-6 minutes before post-resusitation neural defeceits will present. This number can be lengthend by Hypothermic states, Cpr, and the use of vasopressors.

yeah, what is death defined as? I would say it's when your brain stops working.

and just an interesting fact... when people fall in extremely cold water, it has an effect I don't really understand very well that allows them to stay alive for an insanely long amount of time without oxygen. I think the record is about 45 minutes.

I'm pretty sure this isn't an urban legend... I heard it from my wilderness first responder course instructor who was also a paramedic, and he seemed to know his shit.

your body goes into a sort of hibernation, a type of suspended animation if you will. young children are more likely to be able to do this because it will be less of a shock to them as they were more recently just a fetus in the womb, surrounded by liquid. pretty much the body cools down so much that everything becomes much slower and your body doesnt require as much oxygen. i'm no expert on it, so you could just search for it and learn more, its really cool when you get really into it

21 grams is widely accepted as the weight of your soul, since the left over air in your lungs only seeps out slowly after, and their isn't a change in this weight for anyone apparently... and that hibernation thing is freaky, but alot like that type of frog that totaly freezes and then thaws in the spring, fully functional.

uh dr.gonzo you cant just simply weigh a dead body and say that their is 21 grams missing. You would have to place a dying person on a scale and do it like that, and that isnt very ethical now is it.

not true, it is 2 completely different things: she was beyond being able to be saved, there was no way except for a miracle that she would ever regrow her brain. she ceased to exist as a person, her body was still functioning. so unless they were artificially feeding her to keep her as an experiment (which she was, an experiment for the republicans and their pro life stance, how unethical is that?), or to donate her organs to the thousands of cognisant and living people in need of a transplant, then there really was no reason to keep her alive, especially if her husband said that she wouldn't have wanted that.

almostaskier I also consider retarded people not normal functioning people, they are brain dead and have absolutely no chance of becoming normal human beings. she wasn't "retarded" as you say, most likely in reference to down syndromic people. she was brain dead, a non responsive being that still functions by artificial means. not a "retard" that serves no purpose, a being that has no chance of ever LIVING again, because she was no longer living, just functioning. i think you fail to see the difference.

it isn't ethical to starve someone to death, if this person is still alive. she was dead, just not completely (bad choice of words there) gone, and to be taken off her lmife support resulted in "death" by starvation. should she have been put down? dunno. just its not the same thing. and you failed to answer my question: how ethical is it for the republicans to put their aganda before the respect of her person, mediatising her all the way, and having the famous teris law be passed ?

Thank you for the reply but, if I remember the facts correctly she could of still lived on her own without any of the machines. All she needed was food just like you and me. I'm not saying it would be miserable or not miserable living in that state of mind cause none of us know what its like in that state of mind, 50% of the people are screaming that life is life and other 50% are screaming let her go in peace. But I think that this is where the issue of agenda comes in. If you are gullable enough to belive that this is only the "RIGHT WING" agenda then you are absolutely wrong, cause I gurantee you there was enough intrest in both of the parties in this case that benefited each other agendas. Ex. Pro Life vs. Pro Abortion. And then you are asking me how its ethical for republicans to put their agenda before her wishes. This again can go 50/50 depends on your opinons on the husband. I personally believe that the husband should of had no right to this considering he has been living with a woman and 2 kids for years now, did not allow anyone in the family to be there when she died, cremated her and gonna bury her states away from the parents. Its not like he is going to be stopping by and checking the grave out here and there, unlike her parents. For fucks sake the parents have brought up the kid and put all their love and support for atleast 18 years and all they got back was a husband with his own agenda and not whats best for the family. Once again I think that you can go either way on this case depending on what you believe life is.
