Lately I’ve been landing backseat on a lot of my spins and getting really bad shin bang. Is this something that can be partially alleviated with better fitting boots or will landing backseat no matter what boots you have give you shin bang?
i cased a 45 foot today and felt nothing lmao. i dont feel anything when backseat or shinbang whatever
Boots do help a lot. The better they fit your feet/calves the less room your legs have to wiggle around and get those pesky little bruises. Im not capable of landing bolts every time, but just try a little more shin pressure? Idk im not a coach but thats been helping me a lil.
You’re gonna wanna fix your technique before you get bad shin splints and can’t ski for 2 weeks. Do you ski with active dorsiflexion? Do you bend your hips? Do you ski with poles or air poles? You can have the best surefoots and everything and still get shin splints and stretched knee.
I get toe bang well before I get shin bang with backseat landings so yes it's possible. Previously I did have bad shinbang from poor form skiing throughout the day. Fixing that and adding booster straps prevented my shin bang.
yes if you just land on your ass (not recommended)
When I was learning 360's my shins were so beat up it hurt to put on skinny jeans.
A good boot fit in general is always great advice. If you can't afford one you can always try showing up to a shop and asking someone to check your boot fit in exchange for some beer to at least get you on the right track with a DIY fit.
Learn mute grabs - that's what finally helped.me fix my backseat problem. Good luck!

if you are landing backseat every hit its time to chill
I have boosters too and I’m more likely to get toe bang too

OP, part of it is the same as shin splints that runners get. It’s from pulling your toes up fast. The muscle pulls from the bone. Getting better fitting boots and not landing backseat will alleviate this a lot.

can be bad on boxes and still send jumps

Yea I don’t get it. Straight air is like the first thing you learn in the park.

Big toes turn purple every year
You are going to get shin splints if you land backseat. Adjusting your technique so you land better is the way to fix it.
Good fitting boots definitely help but you'll still get shin bang if you land wrong/often enough

Shin pressure/thinking about leaning forward or back never really clicked super well for me, so instead I visualize tip-toeing in my boots to stay centered for a jump/rail lip, helps me a ton.
If being a ski instructor taught me anything its that people learn differently so if one description of a technique isn't clicking, just try another type (Cognitive, Associative, Physical, or something like that)
at some point your shins just get so hardened you don't feel shin bang no more.
after 17 years of freeskiing, my shins are literally dead to feelings, it even feels wavy if you glide with your hand over them. their done haha
put on 3 layers of socks..if your shins arnt black you aint doin it right
That’s like the mma guys who get hit in the shins so often that they lose feeling lol

I've somehow never once had shinbang and I've been skiing park for quite some time now. Very prone to toebang however
Just land switch all the time. Can't get shinbang or toebang landing switch
If you land on your neck, you'll never have to deal with shin bangs again. It's a secret hack big boot doesn't tell you.
Can we direct this convo more towards toe bang? My shit is getting that mid season purp look to it. Gonna get this boot fitter to take a look at things in my boot. Anyone added extra cushion or something above the toes to keep them in place. Sometimes my toes hurt from just stomping a drop to flat on hard pack…really wish my big toe wouldn’t stay blue till may every year

i've got the waves in shin bone too, always thought it was from skateboarding
properly fitting boot will help significantly (probably size down, toes should still be grazing front when flexing into shin and heel is pulled back)

I got so tired of toebang every year on my same right big toenail that I almost had the toenail permanently removed last summer. Apparently there’s a risk of nerve damage though, and I don’t want to live the rest of my life with nerve pain in my foot. So I am still dealing with the toenail

buy this its a cautery pen to burn holes through your nail, will alleviate the pressure. you can do it with a paper clip but it takes forever and you want to get good at this. you can also get the nerve endings killed/blocked whatever so the nail doesnt keep growing, it just looks like it was cut into a square. ive got it done on the outside edge of my big toes.

Lighter and a sewing needle is how I do it.
Y’all wild

Ski like your shins are glued to the tongue of ur boot. I picked that up from my ski instructor stint and it has actually helped so much and I rarely get shinbang anymore
but also take a day or 2 off before trying this cuz getting used to it while ur shins are already banged is painful

did it like that for years but the cautery pen is a game changer fr fr!
