I know she’s incredibly skilled and dominant within her field, and I also know pro skiers are typically left leaning (and have double digit concussions and didn’t go to real high school) and liking communism aligns with those types of views and behavioral patterns, but is anyone else legitimately mind blown by the amount of high profile pros who seem to support her? I don’t see how she garners such massive support (from westerners) despite having made a choice to support a government who kills and imprisons their political opponents. BTW I’m not saying all pros are concussed idiots, but I do know the VAST majority of them grew up with a Grotesquely privileged lifestyle, and advocate for change, UNTIL it involves cutting off support fo someone advocating and competing on behalf of one of the most horrid dictatorships on earth. Also, I know shit is political and you can’t just tell the best female skier she’s a horrendous person (even though it’s true), but I hope and pray some of the big time pros come out in opposition of her and her abuse of the top notch US training

This same argument could be made for any US skier. The US commits horrible acts of violence same as China but you wont say it's crazy that a US skier has support from the pros. also left leaning≠communist.
NoahsArkThis same argument could be made for any US skier. The US commits horrible acts of violence same as China
Just the same huh
Op she's joined the rank of spineless oligarchs but she's still the best woman skier in the game right now. You can respect her talent without respecting her decision to represent china. Plus, there's no way she gives a fuck about what some neckbeards on the internet think when she's literally royalty to the ccp.
Yea I don't get why she would wanna support fuckin china when she would be at the top of the US team

people make it political because she’s the most sold out skier ever to do it
Jemspeople make it political because she’s the most sold out skier ever to do it
i don’t really understand how being soldout correlates to being a political skier
probably because most pro skiers know each other somehow and shes friends with them.
You need to rethink what you said honestly it doesn’t add up
fegetablesausagei don’t really understand how being soldout correlates to being a political skier
Because normally selling out means trading your values for money thru a company. Gu is doing it through a country, one that a lot of armchair foreign policy "experts" do not seem to like, so of course they make it political.
fegetablesausagei don’t really understand how being soldout correlates to being a political skier

Anyone who compares the U.S to China is a legit fucking retard and either lives with their parents and or has some cushy desk job and so they don't know shit. Once you actually get out and work / work with immigrants, then you will learn a thing or two. People come to the U.S with nothing and live life's that wouldn't even be possible from where they come from. All the Bernie bros acting like the American dream is dead have the work ethic of a snail which is why they have a net worth of 2 dollars and a Casio wrist watch.
Once you work with people from places like the middle east, Cuba, Brazil, El Salvador then the last thing would do is compare a country with a class system (China) to the United States.

Kids have zealot parents, and Donald trump fucked up peoples brains so badly that they totally lost the ability to think objectively about anything at all related to politics.
They see China as a not “trumpy”, and people who hate communism as “trumpets” which is their shitty childish way of dismissing the opinions of those who disagree
fegetablesausagei understood it’s beacuse she wants to inspire girls from china to start freeskiing, pretty respectable cause imo. And we should stop making skiing about politics
doesn’t seems very respectable to me to support one of the most hideous governments in the world
Jemsbecause she’s getting milllions from china
Chinese government pays her to ski? 🤨
There is a crazy amount of overlap between people who dislike that Gu is representing China and people who call covid “China flu.”
mrk127doesn’t seems very respectable to me to support one of the most hideous governments in the world
Couldn't you look at making freeskiing more popular in china as helping bring freedom to china? Freeskiing's roots are based in anti authority culture, Eileen gu representing china will do more to undermine the chinese government way more than any of the uber nationalistic bros on here
Jemsbecause she’s getting milllions from china
*Chinese brands and it was only if she won gold, which she is gonna do in all 3 events now probs.
Joss won a gold medal in 2014 and got dropped by his ski sponsor.
She chose the path that was best for her career, selling out is the most naive comment anyone can make about skiers, its call making a career out of your passion, not selling out.

BiffbarfYou understand chinese brands are the government right?
IDK seems like people keep wanting to make this political when its clearly not, the way china operates is much different so im sure the gov has their hands in the bucket, but so does every other country, right?
I think people need to chill out on this rhetoric and be stoked this 18 year old girl is pushing the sport beyond any level it has ever been, she has been Kelly x10.
OP, as far as I know from the athletes I know, they support Eliene. She is pushing the sport to a whole new level and is challenging every women's skier to perform at their highest level, competition is great for the sport and I think most pros aren't taking a political view on this situation. It's not like a controversial country hasn't been involved with skiing (russia) for decades...

I agree that China is doing absolutely fucked up things and it is a HUGE problem that needs to be addressed and called out on a world scale.
I also have many Chinese friends, US friends who moved to China, and work with TONS of Chinese citizens. I'm not going to write them off or say racist things just because of the place they grew up.

Great point with Russia honestly, and I agree having someone like her around will hopefully make the women’s events more entertaining in the future but I find her actions to be very Immoral and fucked up, and it’s a damn shame that it has to happen like this

yeeeesh i must have forgot that all chinese peopple are mindless drones and its fucked up to try and inspire them! Freeskiing is based in going against the man and individuality which are both in direct opposition to the ccp. Obviously it'll only be accessible to some privileged people there (just like it is in the us) but getting more people into freeskiing in china is good imo.
SSteezleHow does this have upvotes? Why don't you live over in China for 5 years and report back to see if you still stand behind this statement.
Cause its not wrong lmao. Left leaning isn't communist and every president we've had is a war criminal. Its still fucked up that cops kill citizens every day and still fucked the military kills around 4 civilians to every one enemy in the Middle East.
People get their jimmies so rustled every time the us is criticized lol

So going to preface this by saying idc about the whole "selling out" or "switching sides" bs like go get your bag whatever. The way she just carries herself and interacts with the other competitors is still what gets me. Watching finals last night she wasn't cheering along with the rest of them, the other girls celebrated together and were always supporting one another. She was always lurking in the background looking pissed until the end when she ran to hug Tess who clearly wanted nothing to do with her. Maybe she's just the ultra competitive type like a shaun white but regardless she comes across like a bit of a bitch. Would be interesting to hear what the other girls on the tour think of her.
Professor-ModeloI never said anything racist, or encouraged anyone to do so. Or to dismiss Chinese citizens asirrelevant. Quite the opposite actually. However, the ping ping comment was fucking hilarious, and I will stand on that
I know we're obviously never going to agree here but *IN MY OPINION* saying a racist comment is funny is just as bad as saying it yourself.
She is pushing equal opportunity in girls skiing asshole

The end of the big air event wasn't really a good measure I think, Tess' father passed away like a month ago, I don't think her actions were personal and Eliene obviously didn't know what to do.
As for the cheering, have you been to the start gate of a big event? nobody talks dude, they get fired up at the bottom and cheer etc but don't judge someone for being serious about a competition, everyone does it.

How do you make a terrorist? Drop bombs on their country; target schools, hospitals, and first responders after initial bombings. Make sure the shrapnel clearly says "Made in *country you want them to hate*". Next, claim to be nation building while you exert hard power on civilians and ravage their natural resources. Trillions of dollars and thousands of lives later, leave so adversarial nation can establish deal with new ruling government. Yes very smart and tactical, terrorism surely defeated.

While the comment was insensitive, it highlights how fucking dumb that argument is considering the vast majority of children in China don’t have access to consistent food. The only kids In China who will get on skis because of gu are the ones who’s fathers own factories in Shanghai, and abuse 7 year olds for 80 cents a day.

Only one of the countries you mentioned currently has millions of their citizens in literal concentration camps.
Gu is easily the best female skier in the game right now and I respect the effort she puts forth. Doesn't change the fact she is selling out for a country that is commiting a genocide in modern times.

I was referring to both the bottom where the girls were all comforting one of the girls who'd just fallen (I forget who) and Gu just looks at her almost scowls and walks by. Even while the girls were all on deck in the waiting (box?) room all the other girls and coaches were cheering or cringing at crashes but Gu just sat in the corner away from everyone looking pissed. It felt like the girls had a ton of camaraderie last night, which I think is fucking sick, it just doesn't seem like she's apart of that group love.

You realize that it's the same in the USA, the only girls who will go skiing are the ones whose parents are in the middle class or higher...

As I said- go live there for 5 years and report back.
Want to go on a 4 day ski trip in an area that isn't your home residence? You'd have to ask permission and get a permit to do that in China. The US does not care where you travel within the states or how long you are there for.
Want to go onto reddit and get different perspectives on current news? Nope, not possible in China. There's only a filtered internet that China controls.
Want to watch adult content? 3 years in prison in China.
Want to play Mortal Kombat? Not allowed in China because of violence, along with many other video games involving violence or gambling.
I'm not saying the US is perfect, because we're not. However, so many people in the US don't realize how lucky we are to live here. Why do you think so many people risk their lives to come here? China isn't having that problem.
fegetablesausageChinese government pays her to ski? 🤨
eheath*Chinese brands and it was only if she won gold, which she is gonna do in all 3 events now probs.
most countries’ governments do have a payout for athletes that medal in olympic events. idk what chinese brands she’s also repping but at the very least i would think that the ccp is paying her reward incentives for medalling.
I think Eileen actually means well and is genuine in trying to heal a tense US-China relationship. Surely she is pretty torn loyalty-wise to the country she grew up in and the culture her family is from and carries on. That being said I think it's fair to say she is being somewhat naive here, the CCP is probably making her choose between having a public image in China and having opinions on the hot-button topics like Xinjiang, Taiwan, and Hong Kong. I think her being an influential Chinese figure and *not* vocally criticizing America or siding with the CCP on anything that I know of speaks volumes, but only if you pay close attention to foreign policy.
The thing that makes it really tricky is that China is a one-party state. In America it's easy enough to say "proud American, I don't support those evil Democrats (or vice versa) though". As much as they wish it were true, the CCP is not China, but having only one party really obfuscates this.
There is of course a big money incentive here too. Big brands (many of them global brands, not owned by the CCP but no doubt under close watch by CCP regulators) can market her to a huge market more easily this way. IDK who needs to hear this but China does in fact have privately owned companies and billionaires.
I highly suspect she detests what is going on in Xinjiang and can't say much about it. I don't necessarily agree with her just, you know, not talking about the elephant in the room and skiing for China, but I think in a private conversation she would probably come across as a well-meaning person, projected into complicated international politics, at only 18. She is a skier, barely out of high school, not a diplomat. Maybe other pro skiers, those who know her on a personal level, see this too.
eheathYou realize that it's the same in the USA, the only girls who will go skiing are the ones whose parents are in the middle class or higher...We get it, you don't like china and how they have been doing things, but if you need to realize that Eliene doesn't care about politics, only people like you do.

Thank god I don’t need your approval to go about my day, lmfao. I don’t need a “pass” from you because I chuckled at something. And while the gap between rich and poor is out of control here too, and skiing is definitely and unfortunately a “privileged” sport, the severity of the situation is MUCH MUCH greater in China, so the whole “inspiring Chinese youth” thing is just a crock of shit, unless you’re talking about the top .1%, of course
