On break from school and went up with some friends to Tahoe for my first few days of the year. About two hours into the first day, I blew up in the fingers and broke my L1-4 vertebrae and a couple of ribs, as well as bruising my lung. Ski patrol sledded me down, spent the night in the hospital, and now I can hardly walk. Pretty sure im gonna miss the rest of the season, and trying to decide if I was being too aggressive or just got unlucky; it was my first day of the year, but the snow was great and I felt plenty warmed up. Regardless, I missed last spring due to a torn MCL and think I might start to chill a little.

Dang, thats a lot of damage! That run looked like it had turned into a pretty good bobsled track to lol. Just remember you only get one body and hopefully who'll have to make it last for a lot longer yet. Also, maybe use a little more discernment on your line choices haha.

Damn dude :/ get better soon 👏🏼
I'd say you're lucky you didn't continue on and hit that tree. Could been way worse man. It's early enough, you might be OK. What did the doctor say for total recovery time?
I'm still confused from that video. Seems like a puffed out ledge right under a small drop just bucked you? knees compressed into ribs?
Fuck man always check your lines, hope u recover in time for spring.
Unfortunately I did hit that tree that’s what did me in my jacket has a pretty big hole through it and my shirt was a little bloody. Prob gonna be like 10-12 weeks, funny enough this is my second broken back :)

Someone must’ve either traversed or taken a quick turn out the bottom, made a little lip and I just got bucked right into that tree at the bottom. Had scoped it out a bunch but couldn’t really see it from any angle I had but definitely coulda taken a little more time

That sucks but hey just be glad you didn't get a branch through the torso and bleed out before you reached the hospital.
You may actually be lucky. Sorry to hear, and thanks for the cautionary tale. Push gently in therapy.....
Definitely could have gone way worse and I’m honestly very glad to be able to move my legs

Vibes for a speedy recovery. Things could have been much worse, take the down time to recover and prepare for spring. You will be back before you know it.
Dang essentially had the exact same thing happen to me, same vertebrae and everything in 2019, get well soon
Damn. My mom broke her neck exiting a chute in Whistler and hit a traverse track and got sent. The upper chute you had to hike to, the traverse came from people cutting in lower - similar to what people might have done here. Brutal. That’s a lot of compression. Good luck with recovery!

No, you were just being a fucking moron skiing way above your skill level because you were showing off to your buddies. The fact that you thought you were "pretty warmed up" on the first day shows how skewed your perception of reality is.

Damn, never thought I'd see the day when skierman replies to my thread! Ive skied this chute plenty of times, think I shoulda just taken a sec to realize I was getting very sloppy seconds

A lot of times squaw will close some of their hikes during weekends because of this, I know a few years ago a local photographer ended up paralyzed from coming out of the palisades. Hope your mom is doing well now!

Line looks pretty tame to me buddy, idk might be difficult for u tho. I won't judge.
It looks like some Jerry took a chunk out of that spot there and my man was misfortunate enough to get rocked by it.
That sucks dude! Play lots of steep and recover quick. Sending good vibes your way
yet another gaper game trail victim. people need to stop traversing under established cliffs and lines it ruins the runout for people who can actually ski.
there are so many chutes at crystal that would be sick if they didn't have a goat track the size of i5 cut right across the exit. maybe patrol could run rope lines along each side of landings/runouts so you could at least have 1-2 seconds after landing to get ready for the jerry staircase.
vibes for a quick recovery

Fuck, I had to learn about those the hard way too. Leaped before looking and saw my landing pad was a road gap due to the noob tracks and I was going to come up short.
It is fustrating as fuck to always look before hucking. The backcountry was a good solution, but now its become another resort.
Just as many people out of bounds then in

Before you read this just know I feel you homie, I've broken almost every part of my body doing dumb shit. Get better soon, but...
skierman is a dick, as usual, but I actually agree with him. In the video all I see is a skiier being way too aggressive for their level, you basically straightlined into a compression and couldn't handle the buck. It's not like you couldn't see where you were going either, you just didn't have the strength/skill to absorb the hit and got bucked to the fuckin moon.
My recommendation is to chill the fuck out when you're skiing.

Bro it doesn't matter how many gapers fuck up "your" line, if you get fucked by a single small compression in your line you are skiing way the fuck out of control.
Watch the video again, homie basically just does a straightline into a compression and gets bucked, how fucking stupid is that? You either gotta know what you're skiing into or have to skill to make an uphill right turn or just absorb this hit.
I've gotten fucked up doing similar shit, so I got sympathy, but the fault clearly lies on OP for skiing above his level, not on gapers for doing gaper things.
Definitely agree with you saying I gotta know what I’m skiing into - had I gotten a better look at the immediate apron woulda skipped out on it as I had no intention of trying to make a critical turn like that. With that being said, here’s me in it last season to try to prove its within my skill level lol

"Oh uh man, naw I didn't crash cuz I don't have the skill, it was either bad luck or a gaper ruining the outrun!!"
Hahaha, yall a bunch of fucking clowns with inflated egos.

not talking about a "small compression" i can moto through chop and bumps just fine. i'm talking about the sets of massive fucking traverses that people cut into the hill because they can't ski fall line for more than 3 turns.
i wouldn't have dropped into what OP did either but claiming that any amount of skill, control, or left turns would have kept him from casing that absolute wall of a traverse is delusional
fault lies on the gapers for making fun shit unskiable. the end
