Y'all see the NS insta?? The Ikon Post? Looks like NS has to turn tricks for their new Pimp Alterra to stay afloat. I'd rather see this place die after a gallant 22 year run than contribute to the rapid downfall of the enjoyment of our sport
The email too.
They even sent it to my wife and she doesn’t even use NS. It’s gotta be them tracking her phone in close proximity to mine. What’s that called again?

If you think IKON is ruining skiing, you need some new priorities in life.
Just to add, alterra has been advertising the IKON pass on NS since it came out, how did you just notice this now? Sounds like you don't look at NS very often.
imagine complaining that a free site needs to advertise to pay the bills
Do you think the admins get paid in shitposts?
My main priority in life is skiing. When I have to wait 45 minutes in a lift line for every single lap, after a 2 hour drive up the canyon which is usually 30 minutes (oh btw you can def get into the canyon without traffic. But you end up sitting at the resort waiting an hour or two for lifts to spin 🤷♂️) on a day when it hasn’t snowed in a week, it makes me want to just fucking quit the sport altogether. The insane overcrowding (in my case, of the cottonwoods) can absolutely be attributed to ikon pass holders. And it’s completely ruining the experience for me, someone who lives, sweats, and breathes skiing. Collective passes like IKON and EPIC will be the death of the “local” skier. Everyone who’s serious about the sport will turn to the skin track. Resorts will become more luxurious, more expensive, and people getting a taste of the resorts bc of IKON will move to ski towns and drive the cost of living up, pushing out the locals who’ve made endless amounts of sacrifice to do this sport that we’re so in love with. It’s sad to see the canyons overrun. And it’s sad to see you act as if IKON/EPOC has zero effect on the skiing experience for EVERYONE who shows up to those resorts. Have fun with your 2 hour long lines in 2025

I hate to break it to you, but thats not because of IKON or EPIC. Ski somewhere else if you don't want to deal with crowds, you're skiing at one of the most popular ski destinations in the country. These resorts continue to operate FOR YOU because of this tourism. Tourism has fueled the ski industry since day 1, its not any different today than it was 10 years ago, people just got instagram now so they can constantly complain, gimme a fucking break dude do you not realize how fucking petty you sound?

Probably not cuz of Ikon bud. Outdoor recreation has been gaining popularity in recent years and guess what, you live in an area that has plenty to offer. Take away Ikon and youd probably have the same problems.

Also, aren't you being a bit harsh for circumstances of this year? every ski resort has been a madhouse this year because of covid. But you could just move back to atlanta...

The pricing-out of locals has been ongoing for a while now, Summit County and Wasatch Counties specifically. Its not the cottonwoods but its a way worse situation going on on the other side of the range. At least SLC has affordable living and tons of jobs that pay well.
I grew up in SLC, skied brighton as a kid as well as the other cottonwood resorts, and yeah its a bummer to see those places absolutely rocked with people, but it was only a matter of time before Utah became the hotbed for ski trips. The valley is blowing up, more people moving every single season, like at one point we gotta address the Local congestion on top of Tourist congestion too. Us locals crowding-up the canyons are just as much of an issue than the Ikon congestion or whatever.

Says the guy who moved to utah recently... im not saying im better but you gotta understand that your statement could be said for people like you too, SLC's population doubled from 2010 to 2020, either embrace it or leave thats all you can do.

Hate to break it to you but you can blame instagram influencers posting nonstop pow shots making skiing cool again. maybe 1/4 cars have been from out of state at alta on pow days, so its not a visitor problem. Its mostly tech/finance bros working remote that idolize unofficial and jerry of the day crowding the resorts, they all leave by noon anyways, so just be patient take an early lunch and get your hot laps in after

How about people who live here ski here and not every single person from California and other surrounding states flying in on pow days with Ikon passes
BigPurpleSkiSuitHow about people who live here ski here and not every single person from California and other surrounding states flying in on pow days with Ikon passes
I don't think the passes make a big difference for these people, if they can afford to fly anywhere at the drop of a hat, they'll just buy a day pass 🤷♂️
If you ski at a nice resort you’re gonna get big lines. I ski at a small resort and sometimes you can walk straight on the lift on weekends. Why are you mad that other people want to ski at a good resort? If you really care about lift lines that much, go support a small hill and embrace 5 minutes of skiing per lap. Or hike.
utah needs a solid 14-day stretch of high pressure and 50 degree temps and fun spring vibes again like last weekend. We're way too fucking angry this season lol

Lol dude you live in a multi million person city with skiing ~30 minutes away and you're surprised that there is traffic when the only way up the canyon is a shitty 2 lane road, they are limiting parking, and the popularity of all outdoor sports is exploding due to covid?
Its not to blame on the Ikon dog. Its just the situation and the rising popularity of skiing. Skiing has blown up in popularity multiple times throughout its history, it will slow down again....then you can have lifts
Do you know what the real problem i saw when I was there? The 'locals'. A solid 8/10 cars that we saw in traffic were solo people. Solo people arent ikooks taking a trip with the fam. They are mostly 'local' salt lake skiers. Learn to carpool salt lake. you could halve the traffic problem.
Also this post is dripping with elitism. Only you are allowed in the canyons because you're a true local? gimme a break. you're adding to the traffic just as much as anyone else.
Dont get me wrong when the Ikon came for tahoe it was easy to blame the crowds and shit show on the pass. Then I realised that the issue is still the same ole same. We live next to the bay and in one of the most popular ski destinations in the world. Traffic and families taking ski trips is a part of living there. If you don't want that, be a 'real' core skier and move to mt. Boho or something.
eheathI don't think the passes make a big difference for these people, if they can afford to fly anywhere at the drop of a hat, they'll just buy a day pass 🤷♂️
Based on liftlines and canyon lines alone, I'd say the passes have made a difference. Maybe part of it's COVID year, but Ikon pass has definitely made a difference. I think the logical solution is to have to reserve your Ikon days ahead of time. That's a compromise right there, still get Ikon dollars, and also make sure that powder days aren't hour long lifelines.

lmfao you don’t know me dawg. I work up at the bird and carpool with two other coworkers every single damn day that we’re scheduled. And I don’t even have enough money to own snow tires. Or to afford driving my personal vehicle up the canyon for ski days. I prolly ride the bus 8/10 times that I ski. And I can’t fucking afford to move.

Why do people feel the need to say that shit? Just don't read it and move on, no need to be a dick. It makes you look like a smooth brain for not being able to read long texts, that aren't even that long.
and it’s not just that! Leo i know you saw those ticket scan stats that someone leaked to BeaterMeater. Ikon passes vastly outnumber day ticket scans regularly, and are very close to matching season pass numbers (which is NOT normal)

Dude don’t be a fucking douche bag. Literally the only way I could afford any season pass was by getting one for free by working at a resort. I had to choose between being able to afford my next two months of rent or purchasing a damn ski pass. My parents aren’t rich. And I’m fucking poor. I make sacrifices to be able to ride lifts. Similar to a ton of other born and bred locals that have no other option.

Im really fucking confused then. You're mad at the Ikon pass because the bird isn't paying you enough? Huh? I don't really understand what your point is?
Also what job do you have. Bumping lifts? Giving lessons? Ski team? Rentals?
and yeah my point still stands. Good on you for carpooling or riding the bus, but a ton of people arent and that's a good portion of the traffic issue.

Look man if you're actually having issues with finances, you probably shouldn't work at a ski resort. You can work at mcdonalds and make more money than an entry level job at a resort, its not an excuse dude you work at a ski resort because you love skiing, you made that choice don't give me this bullshit brother.

The New Age of the crusty Cottonwood canyon skier is hilarious, except we get riled up over a fuckin piece of plastic and meme pages. Unreal.

You still chose the ski bum lifestyle just like I did by working for NS.
You could've gone to college, a trade school (which will probably pay more than a 4yr degree anyways when you're done), got a construction job in SLC from May to October every year (of which there are plenty that pay $20/hr+ with no experience netting you $18k for 6 months of work) ect to pay for a pass. What's your job in the summer? Let me guess, raft guiding?
Plenty of ways to work hard in the off season to cover winter expenses so you don't HAVE to work at a soul sucking resort because "you have no other option."
