Planning a trip to Utah next week, and I saw that Snowbird has no parking reservations and Alta is first come first served. Anyone have experience this year with getting to LCC? Also what's the general Covid situation in Utah? Are people wearing masks and being safe, or do they still pretend it doesn't exist?
Hey I live here; honestly if you do not have a reservation, don’t go. Plain and simple. It’s been absolutely nuts. Alta parking lot fills up at 7 AM and lifts open at 9. If you have Ikon do Solitude/Brighton and if you don’t go to powder Mountain. You’ll have a better overall experience.
ive been out around 30 days and every weekend, and I’ll always pick SolBright over LCC after what I’ve witnessed.
Masks are mandatory and I’ve seen them kick multiple people out of Deer Valley. BCC is a little more chill about it, but they all require them.
Snowbird does require reservations. My recommendation is ski LCC during the week when it’s a bit less crowded and then BCC or pow mow on the weekend to avoid a little bit of the crowds. Looks like you’ll still be able to get some good stuff if you ski Alta/bird Tuesday or Wednesday.

My plan was Solitude Monday and LCC Tues and wed. But even with it being mid week do you think it will fill up since it's a pow day?

110%. Monday is a holiday not blacked out on ikon pass and is a projected powder day so Solitude's lot will probably be full by 8:00AM (they open at 9). I doubt you'll be able to get a reservation to Snowbird now for Tuesday or Wednesday but go ahead and try. Alta is no reservation, but this is the most hyped up storm of the year and Monday/Tuesday/Wednesday look to be blower pow so I expect it to be nearly as crowded as a weekend. Everybody and their mom is going to take off work for this storm.
You'll probably get some great skiing but you are about to experience first hand Utah's IKONIC ski experience.
I'm not even mad I don't ski the cottonwoods anymore...
honestly dude it's a fuckin shitshow. Just get up early as hell and try your best. Expect canyon road closures due to accidents or avalanche control, and yeah, parking is an absolute nightmare even with reservations. I went full-on Karen mode on my passholder survey about the parking reservations and got an email back from one of their employees basically along the lines of "too bad, so sad, try parking on the road or booking reservations at inopportune times!"...They know their systems are bullshit this season but it also doesnt help we're getting absolutely buttfucked with Coronacation'ers this year.
sorry to kinda discourage your skiing, its not the intention, but our crowds and congestion have reached levels worse than Colorado or Tahoes and its not showing any signs of ceasing....I cannot wait for spring to get here with sun and corn and people to finally fuck off for once. Mid week skiing is still pretty fun but still busy as well. Seems like everyone bought a pair of skis or a snowboard this season and wants to live the WFH skibum life haha

It's already bad enough when everyone and their mother from SLC goes skiing in the cottonwoods on a pow day, now we got everyone and their mother from the next 3-4 states over + the normal vacationers and it equals more people skiing than we have ever seen, we will certainly break skier day records this year in Utah

I see.... Follow-up question then: Will my CO plates get my windows smashed in by angsty aggressive locals like @eheath?

haha i dont think there is that much anger going on
nah but you will get flexed on by beaters who just moved to the valley less than 6 months ago and think they're super unique lmao
I mean, maybe things have changed since the first half of January, but I had 7 days at alta then and had no trouble parking when pulling into the lot around 8:20. On two weekend days I got there at 8 just to be safe and the lot was about half full on arrival. Definitely get up early, but I think there's a bit of exaggeration going on unless a ton more traffic has descended on LCC
Second the guy above me, was there earlier and had no problem parking even on a pow day at 8:30/9. Collins lift at Alta was crowded but wildcat was reasonable all day so just did laps on that. Saw Johnny Collinson a couple times. Had Colorado plates and got home with all my windows in tact and paint unkeyed.
Im heading to snowbird next week also, i have a parking res for friday but not saturday. Im staying in sandy, wondering if i should just take the shuttle both days instead from sandy. rental cars are expensive af. If anyone wants to ride hmu
Might as well just walk up the side of the road in LCC. Probably faster.
Wtf if you are worried about covid and people taking it seriously don't fly to utah. What the fuck is wrong with all these grandstanding morons. You can do whatever you want because the virus will leave you alone because you are wearing a mask and orange man bad?

Don't think you can expect uncrowded skiing when you live in a major city with elite terrain and the most reliable snowfall.
Sorry party is over thanks to covid and WFH though. Marry a Canadian or get used to the lines.
I'm pretty salty that tomorrow I'll be standing in queues because they won't spin the fucking tram in New Hampshire due to Rona but Snowbird and Jacksons are still going. Maybe it will be cold enough to keep people away but tickets are sold out.

Holy shit for one I'm not flying to Utah and I'm just saying that because when I was there last summer no one was wearing a mask anywhere indoors and I got all sorts of weird looks because I was. I'm not trying to be political at all.
No one is wearing masks anywhere still. Except at ski areas (kinda) and some stores and restaurants (also kinda). Mormons don’t believe in masks. Mormon Jesus will say who and who does not get Covid. If you donate more then 10% to the church I hear it scares the Covid away

All good.
I personally want to fly there and am pissed at all the fucking locals who live their now and cram the lots and shit. God forbid they miss a pow day and don’t post on Instagram the second they get away from a 30 minute lift queue.
Im not really a fan of mountain town trust people in general though. Tourists I don’t mind.
Utah is washed. You literally cant find parking at brighton on the weekends unless your at the base of the canyon at 7am. Even if you do, your going to sit in lift lines all day. Ive been lucky to get six runs these past few times skiing from 9 until 2pm. They load the chairlift two at a time because of covid but have no problem making you stand in line with 200 other people who just got off a plane from orange county or some other stupid place.
So I ended up going to Deer Valley while Alta was in interlodge and had 2 really sick pow days, something I thought I'd never say in my life. Sure it might be filled with millionaire dentists and trust fund socal bros, but they tend to stay away from the goods. Or it's at least fun watching them eat shit trying to figure out how to ski rockered skis.

Yeah the regulations are a joke utah is busier than ever. Skied snowbasin today and only was in a lift line on my first chair ride and when they first opened strawberry, it was refreshing.

DV is awesome man, I would ski there all season if their pass didnt cost $2k
I moved down to utah this past fall to go to school so I haven't experienced a normal utah season but I gotta say it really isn't that bad. I only have an alta pass so I can't speak for anywhere else, but as far as LCC goes its really as simple as taking the fucking bus. I get it if you don't want to risk getting sick or getting others around you sick because they do tend to pack the ski busses full, but honestly they do a half decent job of keeping people safe. no reservations, no getting up at 5 in the morning to get a parking spot.
Off topic but for a place that is basically the mecca for US skiing the ski culture here is so fucking annoying. Literally feels like high school again. It was a real bummer when I came down here and found out that a lot of the people I looked up to in the ski world are actually pretty arrogant and wack people. And there are whole generations of kids growing up trying to be just like them.
Maybe I'm missig something here but just take the ski bus? Don't have to deal with parking reservations. Save on gas and the environment and dealing with California idiots not knowing how to drive up the canyons.
