I feel the same pain as that guy a few years ago who had his skis both mounted backwards
ColoradoDogfartlession be learned, go to a shop that actually knows wtf they are doing. Trying to explain that you want your skis mounted at center to a normal shop is like explaining algebra to a toddler. Op get your credit and gtfo. Go find a homie who mounts skis or take a drive to a place where you know they know how to mount skis correctly.
The problem is I did make a drive to a place that usually is friendly with park skis and mounts
MaimHelpThe problem is I did make a drive to a place that usually is friendly with park skis and mounts
oh shit
Also reflecting on this I had one shop drill through into the base of my ski. I probably should of got a new pair on that occasion
MaimHelpOne ski is completely backwards, it won’t let me embed the picture but look up magnus 90 online, the On3p text on the skis are supposed to be miss matched
dear lord, what shop did you go to?
That sucks.
Out of curiosity, has anybody ever had skis break at the holes? I've seen many broken skis, but never at the holes (except for pull outs). Even with a couple extra sets of holes skis still seem the strongest under the bindings (not between).
If you can get new skis, by all means do that. But if not just get them to remount properly, know that one remount really won't make a difference at all, and see if you can get something else for the trouble (pair of goggles or something).
Yeah that's weak. They were probably in a rush, and they assumed the ON3P logo was meant to be at the tip of both skis.
If I might give some advice from a shop perspective to all NS members; explain exactly what you want the shop to do. Don't just walk in and say "I want you to mount my skis" and leave. Your skis will be mounted on the recommended line every time, or worse yet, something stupid like this might happen.
Instead talk to the employee taking in your service work, tell them where you want your skis mounted, confirm with them at least one extra time, ask them to write it down on the binding mount sheet. Tell them in your skis have some weird graphic like this, tell them to write it down. The more info you can give the tech, service writer, cashier, boot fitter, whoever, the better off you'll be. Just be friendly, and don't act like your the coolest bro in the world. Communication is key, and don't be a condescending goon about things either. You certainly want the shop in your area, or near a mountain you ski at to be your ally, you do not want to be known as 'That customer'; the one with an attitude that nobody wants to help.
Freeskiers are very much the minority of customers at the majority of ski shops. Wanted skis mounted in the dead center and stuff like that is not what most ski shops do on a regular basis, please keep that in mind as well. These people who work at a ski shop most likely love skiing and want to help you have a great time out on the hill, at least this is the case at my shop. While everyone at the shop may not ski park, chances are they are involved in the skiing community in the area.
Just my rambling two cents. That shop does owe you something by the way, I'm not defending them.
jjdsteezeI took a pair of skis in and was not planning on using them only for park so I just said "recommended". They mounted the toe piece on the dead center line. I never would have assumed that would be a recommended mount point. i thought it would just be like a cm or two back. Learned then to be extremely specific with where I want the mount to be.
that's wild. I almost always just ask for recommended and haven't even considered that someone could screw it up
Gosh OP thats tough man. Try to keep a cool head when ur talking to them about it and tbh it sucks to say but if ur a highschooler I would have one of ur parents try to help u when ur asking for a new pair of sticks simply because the shop might feel more pressure if its an adult there asking them to make it right rather than having them pinch ur cheek and saying sometimes life isnt fair.
Also, if they used to sell ON3P shit, they should be a certified vendor and maybe u can contact ON3P to ask for some help if the shop doesnt give you what u want right away. Just a thought.
BLandz_
Dude i had this same shit happen to me minus the binding ripping out. The guy at the shop mounted my sticks in the wrong place, didnt tell me, the drill holes didnt show because they were close enough to the right spot to be covered up by the bindings. I didnt find out until like 2 years later when i took them into a different shop to get them remounted. After I said numerous times that this was going to be "the second time mounting" the guy was like.... these already have 2 sets of holes in them this is gunna be the third time.

I've never seen a ski break at the holes, but in the bigger picture, extra holes in the ski are a weak point, and do allow more potential for water ingress.
And most importantly, the number of mounts a ski has is a huge factor in how much you can resell them for. When I'm selling or buying skis I calculate each mount to be about $150 of the value of the ski, all other things being equal. More holes just means swapping bindings is gonna be more of a pain in the ass.
Ski shops NEED to replace skis they fuck up the mount on. It happens way too much, and because there's not enough of a penalty for it, it keeps happening. It's absolutely nuts that a shop can get away with effectively ruining a brand new pair of $800 skis and offer you a free tune that costs them like $20 in time and materials. In what other industry are you allowed to freaking drill holes in a brand new product, altering it permanently, and then have barely any consequence for your actions. If this happened to mountain bikers they'd be up in arms, but for some reason ski shops still get away with it.
grantlewis_dntmI think we all know that a shop will never replace skis. Everybody says "oh bro they fcked up your skis they owe you a new pair" and then they go talk to the shop and the shops always say too bad. NOW, when I say NEVER, i mean for something like this. They will probably say "You should have told us because we had no way of knowing" and then they'll flip the ski around and remount it. Sucks for OP, but nobody can do anything right anymore, and nobody owns up to their mistakes.OP, I'm sorry that happened to you, a shop mounted my brand new ON3P's 2 inches back from recommended when I asked for 2cm back from center. And then yelled at me when I called them to tell them they messed up bad. Never got any compensation or even a remount from them. Hopefully the shop makes it right for you
I mean that’s cap because my shop always replaces skis that we misdrill. If it’s the shops fault, it’s on them to replace the skis. Very simple.

It's trendy to have the bro-brah no-bad-vibes like it's chyll brah attitude. People are more worried about causing conflict and being judged than standing up for themselves.

but also if you ever plan on upgrading in the future and selling, the ski will have lost value / ease of sale due to one ski being mounted twice. factor that into your conversation with the shop.
TreyMiddletonthat's wild. I almost always just ask for recommended and haven't even considered that someone could screw it up
That wasn't a screw up. The dude just didn't know where the rec line was on the skis he asked to get mounted, a lot of "freestyle" skis, especially from a big company, have a pretty far back rec line to appeal to non-freestyle skiers

To follow up on this. It was a fully symmetrical twin ski. I assumed recommended would be near center. The only marking on the ski was at center

My bad, I misread the post
My friend just pulled his pivot heel out of his death wishes yesterday.

I did the exact same thing with pivots/deathwishes. Moment replaced the skis under warranty. They were on their first drill though.

Dood have you thought that maybe the tech was just a hella core skier and wants you to caribou all day, everyday?! Thats a perfect mount job.

another valid point, getting warranty on skis with 1 mount, easy most of the time, getting them on a set with multiple? not so easy
This sucks and I am really sorry that happened. The shop needs to figure out how to work with you and ON3P to remedy the situation. I know from being a ski tech and doing hundreds of mounts, it can be a stressful situation. I feel like its honestly time that someone figures out a universal quick mounting system that works for all bindings and people can install at home. It is a major benefit to snowboarding that you can setup your board by yourself and never have to worry about this issue.
The shop is ordering me new skis and remounting my skis so I can ride until they come in.
thank the lord.
That's great that they recognized their mistake and are doing their best to fix the issue. Still sucks that it happened in the first place.

I understand if you don't want to do this because technically, they did screw up a mount, but mistakes happen, and it might have just been an overworked tech or something, anyway, if you put the name of the shop here, I'll leave them a positive review since they deserve clout for doing the right thing.

I would give this shop my business again. Even though they messed up, they owned it, and seem to be doing everything to make it right. Which is seemingly rare.
And OP learned a lesson. Be VERY specific about everything when it comes to mounting a brand that the shop might not carry, as well as EXACTLY where you want the mount. I have had a shop literally go in the back and get the tech so we could be 100% about the mount.
No way bro this just happened to my V’s😂😂

Here’s what the confusion stemmed from. This shop used to carry On3p when filthy riches were around. Since they were symmetrical they had a lot of kids ask for both logos to be at the top of the ski for nose butters and such

Good on this shop for making it right. I worked in customer service/CS management for 8+ years and I can tell you for a fact that a negative experience has about 5x the impact of a positive one. But that said, a positive experience does also go a long way. If I lived local to you I'd go out of my way to go to your shop. It was their fault, but if I was you I'd probably bring them a decent 12 pack to show that you appreciate the good gesture.

Gonna be hard to get a 12 pack at 18 yo but I’ll definitely be grateful and I’ll continue to shop there, just will be specific

Kind of a surprise coming from them. They are pretty legit. Have multiple friends that work there and Brian the manager is fucking awesome.

Hell yeah!!!!
Shit happens, but as ling as people own up to it and make it right it's not that big of a deal.
CossackMaloneIf they were trying to hide it they would have remounted the one ski and not told you, not sent you home with the ski clearly mounted backwards.A decent shop should remount the one ski and refund you for the mount. A good shop I think would do that plus a nice discount on something you need or a bunch of free tunes. A great one would do a new ski, tho it’s not that common.
If the holes don’t overlap and they can do the remount it will still ski good as new, it will just affect the resale value a bit. Anyways I hope you get it all worked out man, those skis are sick!
This is the best response so far in this thread for reasonable expectations in this situation. Mess up for sure, and it sucks to have this happen on a minty new pair especially. Check your attitude when you talk to the shop and see what they offer before asking for anything.
Dont make resolving this kill all your stoke on a new set of skis - seasons just starting and those are going to be fun.

Can confirm. Not a huge fan of the willis chain itself but Shoutout Brian Rockwell what a guy. That dude gives a fuck especially about us broke park riders. Most of the kids who work in there I know as well, good people. That being said though I’ve seen that store fuck up some mounts (Happened to be me once) but Brian always makes shit right.

Was thinking about commenting this right here. That’s the one thing snowboarding definitively has over snowboarding is the ease of mounting bindings anyone can do it and if you mess up you don’t ruin your board.

That’s exactly what happened, I just emailed them what happened and then they called me and made it right.
Also shoutout to On3p who were out of stock for my size so they are building me a pair for the shop to buy.

That's pretty legit. @ON3P look, super easy to trash companies these days. Sure, it blows that they messed up the mount originally, but as others have said, you won't let it happen again, and big ups to on3p for building you a ski. Alls well that ends well man.
Holy fuck this isn’t an uncommon thing, hackel just said it happened to him too
lol! :D
would have thought a pro skier would have had access to a jig, or... a person with knowledge about how to operate it.
Just got a pair of ON3Ps and getting ready to take them to my local shop and I read this thread. I started to get worried, but I thought “this won’t happen to me” Get to the second page and find out its my local shop that did this lol.
