What do you have problems with on the rail? Be more specific.
Can’t ever manage to grease the whole thing no matter how short it is and still wash out all the time
ScaryDumpTruckWhat do you have problems with on the rail? Be more specific.
You haven’t spent enough time on skis actually pushing yourself to do tricks.
Take a different angle inti it. Your angle of approach has a huge impact on staying on longer rails and even different tricks. Lool at the end, even beyond the end. Sometimes tsking a little more speed can help.
my mans you just gotta hit rails until you go crazy
when you think you're done do 3 more and repeat
It’s what I’ve been doing man just been frustrated thanks

I don't blame you honestly. Super steep learning curve and there's never consistent guidance... always felt like I was on my own learning shit cause i didn't know anybody skiing park in my area. Maybe you've got people around you that can help with form, but like I was saying, if you just keep grinding it will come to you.
keep looking at the end and turn fully perpendicular to the rail?
I’ve been in the same boat g. I moved out to denver 3 years ago for school and started skiing last season. The best advice i’ve gotten is go fast, look at the end of the rail, and don’t overthink it
sure i’ve eaten shit in front of people who are way better than me, under the lift at A51, but its all about repetition and confidence
you got it mane
What do you mean by “washing out”, are you falling off the rail as in sliding off of it, our are you totally wiping out and hip checking the rail, slowly sliding off of a rail is all in your approach and your initial rotation, make, sure you are inline with the rail when trying to get on it, keep looking at the end, if if your basically hip checking the rail then you need to put more weight on you downhill ski, I like to imagine that I have a very heavy grocery bag on my leading hand pulling that side of my body down. I work as a ski instructor and these things help my students in the past.
DientoVideo's would really help :P
yeah post a vid if you can. My advice is keep your legs about shoulder width apart maybe even a little more spread and focus on keeping your weight evenly distributed. It sounds like you've got too much weight on your back foot if you're sliding out. Also looking at the end of the rail actually helps a ton when trying to grease them.
hard to know without seeing video but my first guess if you're "washing out" is that you're not committing fully and not leaning forward enough
flex your core, lean forward like you're about to tackle someone, make sure you get the full 90* and look at the end of the rail
post a video if you can, that's the best way to get help by a mile. i know it's spring/summer, i mean whenever next time is. it's super easy to tell you what you're doing wrong that way
mostly just practice though, and being comfy on your skis and having good balance (that you can improve during the summer)
Just get super comfortable sliding boxes, and by comfortable I mean you can slide them without thinking. Rails are really no different if you fully commit.

Don't carve into the rail, make sure you are looking at the end of the rail and do a full 90 on. These are my best tips for staying on the rail until the end.
Perfect the box which is easier to perfect.
Then the rail will come to you much easier
Try hitting it the other way. I "get onto" rails the opposite way I actually spin naturally.
Side note I can't 2 on or off but I can cork 3-5-7-9 etc. Not everyone is going to be a Siver.
this is the best I got. I’ve been able to slide boxes for a while but rails are just messing with my head

What helped me when i was constantly washing out on rails was as soon as i got on i grabbed my knee of my leading leg to keep my weight forward. Its really easy to think that sliding a rail is like stoping on snow which its not at all. All your doing is turning your skis sideways while still staying in your normal skiing position. If its still not helping go back to the basics and find a super wide box and practice doing shiftys on it. In the end it just comes down too distributing your weight equally between both feet.

you can cork 9 but you can't 2 out of a rail?
nature is amazing

youre perfect candidate for the comp jock club
also, secret is gallon of milk a day + uppercuts
Just hit rails for a whole day/weekend/week and I promise you'll see at least some improvement. From what it sounds like you should try committing more and go in with a wider stance .

shoulder width apart with your knees, look at the end of the rail.
yaboibarrywhitethis is the best I got. I’ve been able to slide boxes for a while but rails are just messing with my head
hit the rail with it inbetween your legs and just look at the end
usually i find people who wash out need to widen thier stance. When aproaching the rail come with your feet shoulder width apart and make sure you keep them shoulder width apart from the aproach, lip rail and landing.
As far as locking a rail sometimes it just takes hitting a rail lots of times. Make sure you keep looking at the end of the rail.
As well if it is a ride on or gap rail come centred to it (aka with it in between your groin) if it is a urban or side on you want to come as close and straight on to it as possible (not going at an angle into it you will ride off the rail early)
Hope this helps. get some local shredders to help you out as well next season. usually riders are willing to help with tips when hitting features

Eh my brain just locks up . Always has on rails wake board or skiing. Large jumps, cliffs etc have always felt natural while rails just feel like some alien world for me.
I'm also 28 so my years of serious progression are behind me.
Thanks for everyone’s help will try to go hike some rails again and come back with results
ye dawg.

Yeah I get it for sure, it’s just an extreme example. It’s a weird mental sport that’s for sure
What really helped me was makin a pvc for my back yard so I’d just go out and practice without having to go to the mountain and you don’t have to worry about people watching you fail

I spent alot of time on MX tracks growing up so I just assume my body is way more comfortable with airtime than it is trying to spin on/off a rail. My last concussion was a 270 on a few years ago.
Looks like you've gotten some pretty solid advice already. I had the same problem learning rails. For me I was doing a couple of things wrong.
I know someone or a few people have mentioned leaning forward, for me I was leaning too forward, ending up just sliding over the top of the rail. Also, before mentioned and very helpful is widening your stance.
Second I wasn't landing 90 completely.
The most important thing though was that I was approaching the rail way too closely. I added a picture to clarify what I mean. I think if there was one thing that really helped it would be this. Green shows the correct approach vs red - incorrect. Take in mind this applies to rails that you have to lip onto and can't hit from the center.
Ultimately, as most people have said, the key thing is time, just keep lapping. Don't try to correct everything every time, make small changes every lap and try to take note of what's different, if it made an improvement, made it worse, and go from there.
For me, after hundreds of failed runs, things started clicking and I got consistent because I knew what I was doing wrong and how to address them.

this, practice is the best way to learn just keep lapping it until you break something or make some progress
never really struggled learning rails. i was too scared to fall in front of the older guys and learnt it quick. since you have gotten tons of help already all i can help with is spreading the stoke. fucking get it. railing is the best feeling
