Calling yourself a “Big Mountain” skier is another way of saying you suck
Have you ever met someone who said they were a “Big Moutain” skier and they didn’t suck complete ass? I know I haven’t. I have yet to find a big mountain skier who is decent, park skiing is infinitely harder then skiing down a powder run or some stupid fuckin moguls. Park skiers are just way better in general
Shoutout to the Alta homies for holding it down, you’re the exception to this rule.
Meh, a lot of park skiers are perpetual blue run bombers who can rip until conditions get variable or consequential, then it is a shitshow. It takes a big dick MF do charge variable and make it look good. Balance and control is universal though, if you're good at one you can probably learn to be decent at the other. Like, k-feds are sick right, but have you ever seen someone charge the fuckin ice and rocks below the pali chair like it's nothing? Shit's nutty.

This. A good amount of strictly park skiers are great in the park, and deserve credit for their skills, but a lot of them don't have the ability to navigate variable conditions, with control and while charging. It takes a stronger, more technical background to be a solid "big mountain skier". Most professional skiers, whether they excel in the park or big mountain, have some type of racing background while also exploring other aspects of the mountain during their career. Someone can navigate a park and throw down harder without being able to charge big mountain features.
While someone with a more rounded background will charge harder all around the mountain and also do fine in park if they chose to. There are too many factors to each side of skiing to simplify it down to something like "big mountain skiers suck ass" or whatever this post was trying to prove.
OP acknowledged Alta, but is clearly overlooking numerous other resorts and people who have never skied a proper park and would probably classify themselves as big mountain riders.
Look at the Fernie kids, Sam Kuch, Snowbird, Jackson, Montana, Squaw, Baker, etc.
Between this and the OPs post on touring set-ups it seems like they are dealing with some insecurities.
Also, nothing wrong with being a park guy, a big mountain guy, or whatever. Embrace what you ski and be happy everyone else isn't riding what you are.
throwing down a sick pillow line is way hard than doing tech rail tricks
I know you must be playing, but this is 100% false in most cases.
From personal experience even something like a 2 on to a double kink is inconceivable to me, while I have happily skiied most of the pillow lines I've encountered with gusto.

I have to mention Markus Eder. Obviously I don't know whether he would call himself a 'big mountain skier' but I would categorize him as such. He also rips park harder than the vast majority and has a mean 5 swap.

Yeah he a pro tho, when someone who isn't a pro says they are a "big mountain" skier, they just suck
nolliebackflipI think park skiing is more technical but it takes more balls to ski a sick backcountry line.
They can both be extremeley technical. In the park things might get more tech overall, but that is becasue you can try things over and over. Becasue of this you get crazy tricks that take hundreds of tries, and lots of practice on similair features before hand. For intstance, this wasn't Jesper's first time on s rails or kinked rails, he has spent years practicing on rails similar to this, just not this extreme.
Big mountain is a different kind of technical. Every feature is different every time, and often people are ridding them for the first time. In the park they try to remove as many variables as possible with consitant and close to perfect take offs and landings, and making sure it is groomed so you dont have to even think about the skiing and just the trick you are trying to do. In big mountain, you have to worry about snow quality, obstacles like bumps and trees, weird landings, and the tricks you have to do. Injury is also much more of a risk skiing big mountain, becasue you could be deep in the backcountry or far from help on the resort. If you break your leg in the park, ski patrol will see you and take you down and get you to a hospital. If you break your leg in the backcountry or on a quiet run in the resort with no recpetion, you might just be stuck and have to pray someone will come looking for you. There is so much more to take into account with big mountain, you cant call it less tech because the tricks aren't as hard.
They are so different they aren't really comparable. Obviously the tricks themsleves aren't as technical as tricks in the park and never will be, because it so much more to worry about out of the park. If you can easily do 7's on a 30ft jump in the park, go try a 3 off a 15ft cliff and you will see what I mean.
Why are you trying to call people out who suck at skiing? I thought this sport was supposed to be chill and fun and not a constant competition to be the best or coolest?

It's because he's insecure about his skiing skills.

Aight, I agree witchu and I don't necessarily agree with how OP presented his argument. Butttttt, shitting on crappy skiiers is totally cool with me if they're pretending to be dope and talk about how sick they are riding "big mountain". Obviously every big mountain skiier doesn't suck, that's a stupid thing to get out of this conversation. But I see where op is coming from for sure. Talk to some kid that "gave up the park to crush big mountain lines" but gets scared on the Pali chair. Ya I get it Pali chair is scary and not for everyone, but you probably didn't "give up" skiing park because it wasn't fun. You prolly smacked your shit on a big ole rail and never felt like trying it again. If you're scared of rails, you're going to be scared of "real" skiing a whole lot more. There's alot to be said about park skiiers, and especially the ones that clearly know how to lay an edge. But most of the dudes you see laying down real gnarly shit in the park can hold their own on most of the mountain.
I remember my first beer!! Haha child you know nothing. Real big mountain skiing is harder than riding park. Have you seen most of these park kids ski powder ? Even Bobby Browns technique is laughable same with Henrik watching them ski terrain makes me want to vomit. A real skier should able to excel in all forms. Including park, pipe , rails , urban, , pow booters and real big mountain. aka Tanner, Sammy , Candide, Adam Delorme. The only guys of today’s generation that excel in all aspects is Parker White , the Logan Brothers and Duncan Adams, Kye Peterson, Logan Pehotta is because they grew up learning the fundamentals of how to carve a turn properly. You kids are idiots and this is why skiing is going downhill we don’t respect the legends of our sport like we should and we don’t respect the fundamentals of skiing. In sports like surfing or skateboarding fundamentals are the core of a athletes respect from how they push (skate) or how they carve a rail and do a cutback (surfing). If you can do a double cork 10 but can’t carve a turn then there is something using wrong with you. But if you can carve a turn you don’t need to know how to do a sub 10. The fundamentals are the most important part about skiing. Skier kids have always been seen as the biggest kooks in action sports and it’s cause of stupid posts and stupid opinions like the one the OP holds. Pull your head out of your ass and go learn to ski properly. Big mountain skiing is on a whole lot higher level than park skiing.

Hell yeah brother, kids these days. I’m telling you
I ski the entire mountain and maybe only spend 10% of my time in the park.
You are right, it really sucks.
No o e can keep up with me so I have no friends as a result.
I can butter and trick 20 foot naturals to flat ice and no one ever wants to back me up.
I straightline moguls and my familly thinks i am mentaly ill.
I hot tub off cat tracks and get insulted about my mental health.
And then when i go into the park and do a lip on 2 off i get shit on cause apparently going 45 mph off a pole jam is "not park skiing thats just suicidal"

Sqwa is good on camera but a lot of other mountains have entire 2000 vert lines with features of the same magnitude potential like red mountain, crystal mountain mt baker etc.
Remind me when kye last dropped an urban seg as heavy as even henriks b-roll shots. I agree with you about the all rounded skier thing but to say henrik isn’t up there with candide, Tanner, sammy etc is insane. Of the 6 aspects you mentioned, henrik tops all of them other than sammy / tanner on big mtn lines

This whole thread and argument is dumb, but you just basically said that Candide trails Tanner, Sammy and Henrik when it comes to big mountain lines?
Sorry but no, reminder that on your list he is the only one to win the fwt, arguably the ultimate test of someone's big mountain abilities, along with other big mtn comps like the Linecatcher. Candide is the ultimate all-rounded skier, he paved the way. And while I agree that Tanner, Sammy and now Dollo are trying to follow in his footsteps, and doing a pretty good job of it, let's not forget who the co-goat is.

Nah I meant to include candide with that group, just cba to type them all out as my point was about dollo . Candide, sammy, Tanner and maybe P-white are the best out when it comes to big mtn imo

I think people who only ski park have no concept of other aspects of skiing. There is a reason so many people just ski groomers. doing a nice turn with good technique is one the best feelings on skis, and for me the satisfaction is almost as good as doing a trick. Like I dont know about everyone else but I have mad respect for racers too. They do be clownin picking the one type of skiing where you wait around and dont get to ski much but their work ethic and technique is on another level. If you stick to park only and dont learn to ski properly you are really doing yourself a disservice, especially for when you get older and your body cant take doing tricks anymore.
Wait. Wait..... Really, so people actually respond or tell people verbally that they are quote "big mountain skiers"??? Shut the fuck up this has to be a joke. I feel sorry for folks out west who have to deal with this. That's about the douchiest thing you could say to describe your skiing. Unless you are a pro and say "I'm a professional skier that skis big mountain and backcountry lines, etc etc" that would be coolish. But you're an everyday person who says this, you just sound like a douchebag. In reality the best skiers and in general people who are the best at anything tend to be the humblest. Saying "i aM a BiG MoUnTain sKiER" sounds like you're bragging. Here's what I have to say about that.

bruhs be out here calling themselves park skiers when all they can do is 360 and 2 out
All I'm trying to say is everyone is clownin, it's not just "big mountain" skiers

Park skiers and Big Mountain skiers are both good at what they do... the only person that sucks is the one that won’t just dabble into both park and free ride.
skiing in Oregon gives one the privelage of doing crossover stuff.. we’re not east coast rats that start to fold when confronted with a long vert on variable terrain line down a more technical slope (not a blue run or easy green like park skiers tend to gravitate too when not in the park)
and were not BC bro’s that only hit jumps in the park.. so yup pretty great place to be a skier if I were to say!
All in all though I’ve fallen off a lot of park features in my ski life and I’ve also gotten into seriously sketchy wreckages after bombing 20+ ft drops (sometimes even little wrecks on the mountain can suck if you land wrong) and id have to say I fear for my bones way more when I’m about to crash on a sketchy line as opposed to when I crash out on a park feature... if anything I only get worried about getting hit by the guy after me in the park
I don't really like the trick park. I'm more of a big mountain skier tbh. Usually blacks but even did a double black a few times yesterday. Sucked today though. Went with a friend who could only ski blues. Total jerry but he's cool.
