who influenced the sport of freestyle more Candide Thovex, Tanner Hall, or Jon Olsson
Candide became more of a household name than the other two, thus bringing more attention to freeskiing from the outside world, making it more popular and bigger world wide. Within the sport, Tanner and Jon probably did just as much. They had bigger personalities and are maybe more inspiring to the freestyle demographic.

While I like Candide and his style the most out of the three, the fact that Always Sunny in Philadelphia made a reference to Tanner Hall's ankles in their ski episode is indicative of his major influence to the mainstream world. Just my opinion tho
Where’s Shane you Stunods. But I believe Candide has this one.
for me it's gotta be candide just because of how much awareness he brought to freeskiing. "one of those days" might be the most frequently reposted ski video of all time. i have heard more non-skiers talking about candide than the other two combined.
as far as influence on just the ski community i would say it's a close race between candide and thall, maybe i would give the edge to tanner just because he has been riling up the crusty dad skiers for a couple decades now
I only put Jon down because he pioneered a lot of tricks
bogustI only put Jon down because he pioneered a lot of tricks
I respect that. those three were basically the golden boys of the same era. Except Jon always came in 2nd to Tanner at every single competition; and Candide did the craziest shit on camera. So Jon just never quite carved out the same niche as the other two.
Candide did more for film.
Tanner did more for comps.
Jon bought a sweet lambo.
Y'all sleeping on jon. He's the guy that really got the dub cork train going with dub flat 9s and switch dub 10s that actually looked good. Other people may have done dubs earlier but he's the guy that really made them mainstream. Plus JOI and JOSS were some of the most progressive events in skiing for like 5 years in a row.
Maybe not more influence than tanner and candide but he belongs on the list.
Unpopular opinion, I'm looking for more understanding. I don't understand the hype on Tanner. Yes he has been around since the first generation of park rat skiers. Yes he has innovated style and tricks that were heavily influenced by snowboarding. I get it, he smokes pot and is loose.
He never really dominated comp skiing. His big mountain skiing is not that impressive even when compared to other pros of the same age.
He has done more than I will probably ever do. His segments are entertaining and get me hyped for skiing every time I watch them from 10 years old to now. Still tho I do not understand why people want to put him in the same category of 'Fathers of Freeskiing' that Candide, Mike Douglas, Shane, and others have so rightfully earned.

I understand your point of view. But the Tanner vs. Simon x-games superpipe battle was immense for the progression of pipe skiing and comp skiing in general. I would say tanner was definitely dominant in comp skiing for a hot minute
candide is a goat, makes some of the most jaw dropping clips to surface the internet and any freestyle skier dreams about having the same effortless style from park to big mountain to the great wall.
Tanner is a legend for showing it was possible to film top of the line segments as well as compete at such a high level for so many years and progress the sport.
Jon didn’t have crazy edits and wasn’t an amazing comp skier, but between starting the double train and hosting JOI and JOSS, he was able to negotiate contracts differently and get into the business side of freestyle skiing and start coming out with new companies, douchebags etc... and prove it’s possible to make a full living out of the sport wayyy past your prime.

snowmosexualHe never really dominated comp skiing.
Dude he won xgames slope 3 years in a row, then won xgames pipe 3 years in a row. He was on the podium at xgames in one or more event every year for like a decade, you're crazy if you dont think that's dominating. Hell he even got on the podium at a fwt event last year
And he's one of only 2 people to ever hit Chad's switch, and the only one to switch 9 it. Dude is in his mid 30s and putting out the most well rounded segments with heavy urban, park, pow and big mountain shots that hold up against anyone.
Thall's style back in the early MSP "ski movies" was unreal. He definitely deserves a nod for heart and longevity, but with age the grace and style is diminishing.
Candide was a show stopper from the beginning. I remember I would get so hyped for Hall's parts and then you watched Candide segment from Mammoth super park drop and it was on another level. I would say Hall has been more influential in the long run throughout his career while Candide has gained almost a mythical GOAT status.
They also went about their careers in very different ways. Hall putting out tons of content wearing his heart on his sleeve, with Candide being very calculated and only sharing morsels (knowing we all itch for more).
In terms of my personal Influence, it is Candide. His style is unmatched and to go from dominating park to win the FWT speaks for itself. That tour is nuts
All three had their own impact but Mike Douglas is the one you should be thanking.
snowmosexualHe never really dominated comp skiing.
2019
2nd, FWT Hakuba
2020
Going to stomp a double back in a FWT event and multiple podiums.

All he did was DOMINATE comp skiing. Learn your history.

I don't consider Jon's Kangaroo Flip a double cork. It was a double backflip 180. that's it not. It wasn't two off-axis rotations.
I think it depends on popular culture vs. ski culture. Sub in Shane for Jon though, I wouldn't put him in the same category as Candide or THALL.
That said, I'm going to go with Tanner. While Candide has a lasting legacy, Tanner is the one who I've been more familiar with growing up. He brought pipe skiing into the spotlight, stills kills it, and Armada is his legacy, he's so fucking core.

Candide and CR brought halfpipe skiing into the spotlight... That was the battle long before the simon versus tanner days

Fair, I also kinda forgot about the Candian Airforce for a min. That said, Thall vs Simon was HUGE

Agree to disagree there bud. Watch his xgames big air run from 2008. His feet barely go above his head on the first flip and are level with his head on the second. Do you consider a rodeo 5 an off axis trick, or just a backflip 180 with a grab?

Hahahahaha "than I will probably ever do"
Bro.....he's a co-founder of Armada, has countless groundbreaking segments, dominated X games, took the most famous slam in skiing, has some of the most memorable quotes, and despite his abrasive personality/history is STILL almost unanimously loved throughout the industry.
I guarantee you'll never have the impact he had on ANYTHING.

not saying he is right, but you guys are acting like he just shot your dog lmao

Mike Wilson pioneered the double cork. Jon invented the kangaroo flip and tried to pass it off as the first double cork.

yeah your right
CharlzHubChad was the first to hit chads gap
Correct, Candide was only the first to stick the landing
All 3 made big impressions, some lasted longer than others.
Tanner- basically put new school skiing on the map with X-Games slope & pipe, as well as too many film segments to name... and still adding to it. I'll never forget his switch rodeo 5's and 7's at X-Games big air at Mt Snow in 2001.
Jon- people are definitely sleeping on his past, or forgot. Jon had one of the all-time Poorboyz segments in Propaganda. Everybody wanted to emulate his style at the time... first real impact out of the Swedish scene. Had the ender in Session 1242 (even if Pep's part stood the test of time.) And definitely unlocked the dubs. Kangaroo flip sequence two-page J-Lindeberg ad anyone?
Candide- Superpark Mammoth 2002 hip jump, Chad's Gap, say no more. The least flashy, or outspoken, or pretentious of the 3, with an inimitable style. Probably will go down as the most-respected GOAT of the generation in a lot of people's minds.
Mickael Deschenaux had the biggest style influence of them all, low-key.
bogustno Candide hit it first he just felt bad for chad so they named it chads gap.
Whoa wait is that actually true?
CharlzHubWhoa wait is that actually true?
chad found the gap and did hit it first but after two failed attempts he gave up for the day. however later that day Candide hit the gap and stomped it, making him the first to ever land it.

I did, I was a Dumont fan. This thread needed some contrast if it was gonna have any heat.

i think low key mike has done the most with the 1080 and introducing web content to skiing
bogustif I was to add someone to the pole who should I add?
I'd say Wallisch would be the next add to the conversation. The three you listed are definitely the most influential of my time (I'm 33) and I would say Tanner, but for kids under 25 I think Wallisch has had a huge influence.
If Tanner, Candide and Jon are Gretzky, Messier and Lemieux, then Wallisch is Crosby/Ovechkin.
While Candide is the one whose skiing I'm most inspired by, he's kind of an invisible personality and for a good decade there he was basically a ghost, blessing us with an epic edit every couple years then disappearing again. Like he has this total mystic godly status that's going to stand the test of time, but he hasn't really seemed "present" in skiing since his crash on Big Bertha like 13 years ago.
Maybe that's different in the European scene though?
Tanner has been a vocal presence in skiing for almost 20 years, and somehow he is still pushing himself to do things that are new to him. While I haven't been a huge fan of him or his skiing personally in the last 10 or so of those years, I think he's had a bigger impact. From partaking in (both competing and filming) in every facet of the sport to yelling at kids on newschoolers through caps lock and drunken rants on film premiere stages, he's been a notable influence in freeskiing whether you like it or not.
Jon took the calculated approach (both to his skiing and branding himself), and while it probably didn't relate so much to the average NS kid it set the stage for the airtight comp style we know now and for skiers to take the spotlight through his JOI and JOSS events.
wasatch_ratAgree to disagree there bud. Watch his xgames big air run from 2008. His feet barely go above his head on the first flip and are level with his head on the second. Do you consider a rodeo 5 an off axis trick, or just a backflip 180 with a grab?
that's fair. the Kangaroo got more off-axis as time went on. But Mike Wilson really had the first true double cork.
Anyway, The New Canadian Air Force was truly the crew that put the newschool movement on the map. Nothing compares to that magic. It was astonishing. JP, JF & Vinnie Dorion had incredible imaginations.

after Candides crash remained present for a while only in the last few years has he resorted to only a edit every few years. he crashed in 2007 he realeased Candide kamera in 2008 but in 2010 hew won a ton of freedride contest like freeride world tour redbull line catcher and in 2012 he realeased few words. so his crash wasn't the end of his career rather it was the beginning of a new one of film making and freeride contest.
