I Have been skiing for 4 years now and have progressed alot i ski mainly in bc/ alberta and still struggle a bit in the deep stuff mainly tracked powder with my narrower skis. am debating getting my first pair of pow skis (Blizzard Rustler 11s) but i was curious if i should hold off till i am more in powder to get pow skis or will wider skis make it easier to learn?
If you find that you are sinking in the softer stuff, something with a wider base and a little more rocker or early rise will definitely help. With that said riding in pow is definitely a different skill set that charging groomers. So it will still take some practice.
A lot of people find the Rustler series to be a bit stiff and heavy for their liking in soft snow. From my personal experience, I found them a little hard to have fun on. They are a charging ski at their heart and the titanal sheet definitely makes them solid and responsive underfoot, but this sacrifices some of the playfulness and easy riding that some people love about the pow
If you have ridden Blizzards before and like the way they feel, then they can definitely be a great option. But, if you have a more playful style and are looking to cruise through the fluffy stuff, I would look at something a little lighter and softer.
On the note of holding off or buying now, in the end, that is a budget thing. If you have the cash, more skis is always better. :)
Idk about the rustler 11 because it is probably on the burlier end of what I'd consider a pow ski, but don't wait on getting some big floppy pow boards, they make pow and tracked out pow so easy and fun.
Most people who primarily stay off the groomers will have skis that are 110+, even on low tide days.

What skis are you on now? Are you skiing more in AB or BC?

Im on blizzard bonafides rn and ski about 50/50 in bc/ab
If anyone has suggestions for Pow skis that are stable yet somewhat surfy that would be very cool
Rustler 11 in the size up maybe from the current Bonifides would give you a more more playful and surfy ski with better float than you currently have.
People commenting that the Rustlers are beefy but that’s only somewhat true in the 192cm versions as the shorter lengths are very forgiving tip and tail as there is no metal in those areas. You’re coming from 2 full sheets of metal in a charging ski so almost anything will be more playful!
Rustlers are solid underfoot but pretty lightweight for how good they are in variable conditions. Know Corbetts.com has 15% off Blizzard skis this weekend too so deals to be had too right now.
Moment Wildcat is another great choice but tougher to find at deals especially in Canada.
Black Crows Nocta should be on your radar too. Can be found quite cheap from Europe if you don't mind the old top sheet.
