I know we talk a lot about what are the best ski/ski town jobs a lot but Im curious, what are some of the worst jobs you guys have taken to get through a season or that youve had for multiple seasons just to get a pass? Mine was deff being a rental tech at breeze rental shop up in summit county. Lots of people, no down time, and pay was always shit. whats your worst?
I personally couod never teach lessons again. I like people, I'm good at teaching, but that job grinds away your soul imo.
Also was a lifty/ticket checker for 2 months when I broje my collarbone. Was not a fan of that.
Honestly both have their perjs and coukd be fun but they aren't my jam.

Honestly, teaching sucks ass. I'm doing liftie shit now, and that also sucks, but at least I'm making decent $$, and my mountaing gives you tons of breaks. Just gotta be ok with standing around and herding kooks.
I worked as a rental tech for two months and it was retarded. A bunch of people quit cause it was managed poorly. One time we had to stay until 1 AM to prepare a school of 400 people coming in the next day. I quit that next day.
I feel like everybody chooses liftie as their first resort job and hates it. The only happy lifties ive known were drug dealers on the side. If the liftie job is a cover for selling it can be a pretty nice setup. 10 bucks an hour to say “hows it going” 1500 times per day is not very fun if thats all you got going on.
ive heard horror stories working for places like woodward, crappy time in terms of being paid vs responsibility, between the winter and teaching lessons and the barn and nationals its just all chaos. Im sure summer can be fun but based on squid skiings podcast that sounds like a shit show too.
Being a liftie is probably not amazing. Especially on a powder day, ouch, that would hurt seeing dudes getting face shots while you have to ride their asses up the lift.

Damn both you and OP hated being rentals, maybe its location biased cause I do rentals and demos at park city and personally when I deal with a person who somewhat knows how to ski it's nice. Jerry's suck ass but usually can send em to another shop easily or toss em on some very basic blizzard brahmas, we also dont do kids stuff at our specific shop which is nice.

Idk maybe not my jam and too much day care ish stuff. Also too many douches. I liked coaching freestyle a lot more, got way more repeats but still woukd rather just build.
Working days in parks Id see people trying tricks sometimes and help em out for fun. I dig that or helping friends but teaching for a job kills me.
I just like building/maintaining parks.

Wanna come build Crested Butte's park? The jump line last year was like playing russian roulette.
teaching kids lessons (gradeschool age) rowdy and retarted
the little ones who can barely run are great though. Easy to pickup, and never make a formal compaint

yeah it was a breeze ski rentals, which is basically vail rentals, so it was a constant corporate dictatorship of hell

Lol, I work at one of colesports shops and as long as everything runs smooth it's super chill, were also hot owned by Vail which is tight. Just sucks when Jerry's and hardos that think they're the best and come in to talk about demos for 20 minutes.
I haven’t worked at a ski hill but I have done my share of dirty jobs. I would think the person that has to clean up after everyone like the janitor or the housekeeper in the hotel to the plumber that has to unplug the toilet full of shit and puke are winners in my book.

Skierman: A self portrait
I think ski school would suck. Some of the ski school supervisors I know are fucking weirdos. There's this one supervisor in Mammoth who rides lifts all day watching for instructors skiing with poor form and calls them out on it constantly. My roommate quit after he got bitched at for riding park skis because he "couldn't even carve properly on those pieces of shit". He was riding switch on a bunny slope teaching a 5 year old how to pizza....

The hardcore ski instructors stuck in their own bubble circle jerk are whack af. Every year or two we have to do a riding assessment for Vail to be able to ride on the clock. That makes sense to get rid of the liability of Joey eating shit because he can't actually ride a snowboard but out there on the clock for break.
That said when I did it at Beaver Creek it was mellow as. Dude rip some random carves and went through some icy moguls full speed etc and made sure I looked in control and didn't eat shit. Had decent form etc. Boom, done.
The ones at Northstar are hilarious. We get to go out with people that spend WAYYYY too much time in a clinic setting, probably not enough time teaching, and generally jerk each other off about technique etc.
The one year the guy was grilling me about something stupid, and I told him that I like the way I turn better than his turns. He couldn't really fail me, but they made me ride with them for an extra hour while doing your usual level 3 plus assessments of turns etc.
Also they wanted us doing full turns to a stop almost across the whole hill, doing the bullshit posture movement deal. Which on a busy day would get you fucking killed by somebody riding behind you, and be extra fucked if you're riding with tools. Idk, I taught for a few years, I understand what they're going for but this is a riding assessment not a level 2/3 clinic. Fuck off with your ski school bullshit and let us go back to doing our actual jobs.
/rant
Sparknotes: Fuck riding assessments and the circle jerk type level 3s. There's a time for breaking down and building technique, and then there's a time for practical riding assessment. Something something, frig off!

Solid rant, I've never worked on snow so I've never done a riding assessment but that shit cracks me up. I watched a chick in an instructor clinic fucking wreck a dude last year because she was doing some weird carving exercise and cut very suddenly in front of him. Luckily, patrol saw otherwise the gaggle of instructors would have tried to pull this guys pass.

oh man that reminds me of working housekeeping for keystone, if you guys party there or stay in a room there anywhere on the base of the mountain please please PLEASE leave a tip or booze or something cause we dealt with some SHIIIIIIT Ill tell u what. most memorable stuff I found was three dildos in a room, or a literal turd on a bed. Confused when I found that one.

Damn. Unfortunately not surprising. They're gial was basically to have us riding like we had the whole myn to ourselves/would burst into flames if we hit 3 miles per hour.
Last year one of the day staff girls had to go for an additional clinic to pass. Granted she hits the large 3 jump line at Northstar regularly so at least decent on a board. Not sure what happened but she broke her collarbone in the lesson and couldn't work other than office shit for a month or so. Boss was less than stoked.
I really dont mind a legitimate assessment every year but I'm never doing that one again. I got my level 8 again last year and they can get fucked for future ones.

Honestly I had a badass liftie experience i got out at the right spots (top shacks or chill ass lifts) and with the right people (There we’re actually Lifties that didn’t Ride, so we kept them on the base side of the resort while we all worked the dope boi side) literally everyone I worked with had the system in place where whoever is at the top gets relieved to go ride, so everyone on the lift got to ride and work too shacks (except on days there were just two of us)
Anything guest service, unless you got a knack for that shit, is pretty shitty if you're not stoned most of the time. Ski Vacations arent always perfect, lets just put it that way.
Everyone shits on teaching but if you like kids I honestly love that job. That being said, teaching at peak 8 in Breck on a holiday is a fucking shit show
Literally all resort jobs unless you have some type of management or leadership role. Otherwise it's a bunch of corporate fucks telling you what and how to do something. And/or it's just a minimum wage, meaningless job. I was a lifty, worked guest service, ski school guest service, and taught a few lessons. They're all great in theory because you get paid to be around skiing, a free pass, etc. But once you get past all the "cool" perks it's just another fucking temporary job with little chances of advancement unless you suck a mean dick.
I 100% regret working in skiing. At the time it ruined everything about skiing from literally the drive down (even on days off was full of dread), my willingness to just be at the hill, and most interactions with others weren't very great.
Props to anyone who sticks with it and makes a quality life out of it. But there was never enough there for me personally. So I will sit back, pay out the ass for a pass, ski and make sure to smile back at all the fakes smiles you fuckers give, because I totally understand being in those shoes.

yeesh
Guest service. People literally line up to yell at you.
Don’t work for a ski resort unless you absolutely need a free season pass or employee housing. It fucking sucks when Vail owns you.

I spent my entire season instructing on my SFBs and my supervisors didn't give two shits.

Lack of leadership, support, poor management, and just a general disrespect for the workers from both your own employer and the customers/guests is what drove me away from working at resorts sadly. Top-to-Bottom, people just dont give a shit and it really rubs off on the workers and shows in the form of effort or camaraderie among your coworkers. Its hard to enjoy your lifestyle with living in a mountain town if you're just treated like dogshit at work. Kinda ruins the whole magic and fun of it all. Its not just about skiing everyday. Its a big problem across all resorts in every department.
PeppermillRenoLiftie for Vail.
bongripperBeing a liftie is probably not amazing. Especially on a powder day, ouch, that would hurt seeing dudes getting face shots while you have to ride their asses up the lift.
I was a lifty during the season Vail took over Park City Mountain Resort and it honestly wasn't that bad. It was just before all the growing pains so it was still a pretty relaxed job. Its honestly all about the crew you're working with and the lift you're at. If you're working with a crew thats stoked to shred, then you're gonna be skiing quite a bit on the clock and getting paid to get face shots. We'd track out our zone we worked at HOURS before the public got on so missing out on powturns was never an issue. It was just us and Patrol taking laps until it was "Safe" to open up to the public. Its not all bad, but its much shittier now.
These ski/snowboard assessment things are weird that theyre doing but theyre a massive corporation with tons of liability and people lining up to sue to its almost expected though it sucks. Riding on the clock during your lunch break is pretty common but also seen as a way to milk the clock and in the eyes of companies who dont want to pay OT, thats a big No no so they try to limit that as much as possible now.
