Is this something that is actually popular in Mountain towns/western culture or is it like a hipster thing? Im curious because I grew up playing traditional bluegrass with my family in the midwest and play guitar and mandolin and love Bluegrass.... except Dan Tyminski, fuck that guy.
Woah. Whats wrong with Dan?
Prolly the only stuff I hated was the super hipstery "folk" bastardization of the banjo. Oh man, lets dree like we're from the civil war and banjo, yeah lets get a banjo. Even if we cant play it well be soo much cooler.
Idk. Ive been to plenty of small traditional bluegrass fests where everyone was over 50 or under 10 pretty much. And then seen plenth of jamgrass etc stuff.
Im trying to make it to the jeff austin tribute in denver on my way west this year. Lineup is killer. Stoked I rages the fuck out of the latenoght at wwg last year with leftover salmon, billy strings, and jeff.
Greenskys hype is a little annpying but Ive loved those guys since 2010-11 when they started showing up at more fests and touring the northeast.
Trampled by turtles are sick imo but I can understand why people might not dig them. I like his writing style, they have a good sound, and their shows are fairly consistent.
Idk there's room for everyone imo. Bela fleck fucking rips and that's not traditional bluegrass if even bluegrass. Dudes done some sweet projects.
Del and anyone that plays with him always crushes.
I dig blue highway for newer bands that have a more traditional sound. Good songwriting.
Idk i live bluegrass even though i cant play the banjo or mando for shit

Just not a fan of how polished Dan makes his stuff. I can handle greensky, and trampled by turtles but I'd much rather listen to Del. I got into the steel drivers big back when they still had Chris Stapleton.
What would you guys recommend to someone who doesn't know anything about bluegrass but is interested in giving it a listen?
My dad listened to bluegrass when I was a kid. Think I'll check some out today on spotify, stuffs pretty uplifting.
Monsieur_PatateWhat would you guys recommend to someone who doesn't know anything about bluegrass but is interested in giving it a listen?
Really depends but I'll throw you a couple different things
Blue Highway is good for a modern bluegrass band with a real traditional sound and good songwriting,
Blue highway - Gravel Yard
Trampled by turtles - Drinkin in the morning. One of there og songs
TBT- Wait so long. Newer jam and probably most popular if you're looking for something a little faster.
Greensky - Old Barns
Greensky - Burn them. This is a sweet video.
Billy Strings - Meet Me A The Creek
Railroad Earth - Mighty River
Jimmy Martin - Freeborn Man
Also can't go wrong with Earl Scruggs, Del Mccoury, idk so much good shit out there.
Also plenty of shit in an out of the genre that I think is good. I dig traditional bluegrass, still go to some old timey fests when I find em, but generally listening to more a blend of newer stuff, some that isn't even technically bluegrass.
Idk it's all what you dig. Nothing better than a bluebird day dancing barefoot in the dirt or grass, with that bass cranked up on a killer bluegrass show. I think live is when I most enjoy the more traditional bands. I would recommend checking out some sort of bluegrass in the day if you get the chance.
I suck at remembering things but those are a few that I think you might in joy. If not it's all good.

KBOO community radio in Portland has played a great bluegrass show every Saturday morning for decades. You can listen online live and lots of the shows are archived too. DJs rotate and they play a lot of good stuff

Thanks for putting that list together! I actually enjoyed most of these.
