Buy a lockbox with a combo code and a duffel bag to put it in and stash it under your bed. Anything like booze etc you dont want campus security to get into you put in the lockbox. Here is why- you have 0 rights in the dorms and are subject to search at any time. However, if they ask you to open the box, screw around with the lock a few times and tell them you forgot the combo. Legally they cant cut it open without getting the cops and a warrant etc so its a good thing to have. They cant 'force' you to remember something so you kinda get a free pass. Just know you will prob be on the shit list for a while if this scenario plays out to keep a low profile for a few weeks after.
Aside from that, get a quality set of headphones to chill with. Its nice to put on some music to fall asleep to. Dont bother with noise cancelling as its usually only good for constant noise and not the idiot kids down the hall yelling at each other.
It might be required but a laptop lock is a really good idea. Locking up your skis is a good idea as well.
Also. get a Nintendo 64. They are fun as hell to play and most of the games are more laid back for when your buddies come over. We used to play MarioKart64 for EVERYTHING from who is going to take out the trash to who is getting booze next.
Also, get one of those temp controlled fan units you can put in your window like this one below. They are 100% worth the price because you cant control the temp in the dorms and the school usually cranks the heat because they are more liable if someone is too cold than too hot.
5 tblsp of shaving cream
1 large sized minute maid zip lock bag
empty shaving cream into zip lock bag
place the zip edge inside roommates dorm under the door
stomp on the bag as hard as you can
I'd get a big wooden chest with a combo lock on it. Better than the bag because you will also be able to use it as a chair.
Also get some sheets for your bed. Sounds like common sense but the dude I got paired up with initially did not know this and woke up sticking to the mattress. It's most likely going to be some sort of plastic mattress or even if it's not you don't want to sleep directly on the mattress so use sheets and bring a couple sets because you need to clean that shit since you are going to be a filthy college freshman.
Drink to much and you will actually die so don't be that guy.
Projector + xl white bedsheet. Bigger and better than a tv. Takes up less room too

I just finished first year
save your money and dont buy much decoration
i recommend a nice mug (alot of tea/coffee will be drunk late), a great desklight, and a comfortable chair
watch out with alcohol
coming of age that shits expensive
Fuck as much as you can. Drink with bros as much as you can. Do adderall when you're partying to unlock god mode. Disregard condoms. Do MDMA safely, but as much as you can. Talk to as many people as possible. Lift as much as you can. Pass your classes, but grades really dont matter that much.

Unpopular opinion but learn to keep it in your pants ...don't be a slave to pussy and girls who don't give a fuck about you .also balance your drinking or smoking. I don't drink much if ever cuz it just fucks with my health . Learn to take care of yourself . Lots of people just go ham and let themselves go... but the habits you're gonna form in the next 4 years will stick around ... For better or for worse. Be smart outside of the classroom too.
The only thing I owned in college was an Endless Summer poster
Get some sick posters of like, a rapper smoking, or a Belushi COLLEGE poster. Nahh but for real get LED strip lights that have the little remote, those are cool.
Marker for putting your name on your food.............. you will see how long groceries really last.
get a nice mattress pad definitely makes a huge difference and worth the extra money.
everything on my walls were free ski posters I got from Boston ski expo. posters and flags are easy way to make the room yours and look good

Ya I got one not a huge campus but I love to ride My longboard whenever I can only worried about how to lock it or just bring it into class

Cultivate your personality but keep your ego in check
Tell people you eat ass. You won’t neeed. Too. It’s all about going above and beyond
On the first day of school, pick out the biggest guy in the class. Kick his ass, the professor too if they start a fuss, and anyone else who looks at you wierd or tries to stop you.
You gotta let all the other kids know not to fuck with you.
This also offers potential for $$$ down the road. For instance running a protection racket etc.
Drop out. I'm not shittin ya. University is fucking stupid unless you are 100% set on a career path that requires a degree. If you are just trying to figure out what you want to do with your life, drink, party and do some drugs, go be a ski bum for a season or two. Cheaper, and much more fun.

Lowkey freshman year at Hope kicks a lot of people in the ass acedemically just fyi.
r00kieLowkey freshman year at Hope kicks a lot of people in the ass acedemically just fyi.
This is applicable to every school...
You get out what you put in but don't overwhelm yourself to the point where you're unable to fully study for each class.
If you're decently social-able, you'll make friends. Not too hard.

You go or went to hope?
im in my third year of engineering at the u and the three things u should buy are books, beer and the occational stripper. after the first semester if your parents don't help with funding you'll be broke as shit. If you need rides up to the mtn just pay in beer. any bum knows that shit is currency. but fr just go to class, retaking engineering calc succs
Wrap it up, don't want your shtick lookin like a pepperoni pizza down there
dmoney13You go or went to hope?
I'm not aware of your financial position, but Hope is pricey as hell. You're spending 50k a year at a school not well known for it's engineering programs. Hope is an awesome liberal arts school with a beautiful campus (that's great for longboarding). But you have to ask yourself if it's worth the price. I would seriously consider looking at a public school or going to community college for two years and then transferring to Hope.
Engineering is becoming more and more popular and you have to make yourself competitive. Michigan Tech and University of Michigan are the two most expensive public schools in the state. Both are over 10k cheaper and more highly regarded in the engineering world. With college being as expensive as it is you have to look at what is gonna give you the most bang for your buck.

In regards to finances I got pretty close to a full ride through academics. With Michigan tech I had lots of friends who went there but struggled to get into good master programs. However with hope people have got into master programs at school of mines and other well known institutions. I’m also not 100% with engineering I do like the idea of being a physical therapist so that’s another reason I didn’t go to Michigan tech.

Let me first say that I am not trying to knock Hope in any way- congrats on the scholarship. I have had friends that have gone to private liberal art schools for engineering that can't find job placement and are 70k in debt.
A masters is important but it's not as important as finding employment. You're just a freshmen now but that shit will creep up on you. In regards to tech a large portion of students do accelerated masters or research through tech. Its funny you should mention CSM, a close friend of mine at tech is going to study there.
When I first came to college I was all about the masters, but a masters is just an expensive piece of paper if you can't get a job. I'm much more stoked about my school having one of the largest engineering career fairs in the country than the masters programs here.
If I could have done one thing differently it would have been taking two years of community college first. You save so much money and your GPA would probably see a boost as wel.
Hope is a solid school. I just have a hard time justifying the price tag. Then again all colleges fall under the price bracket of too fucking expensive.

Is that a religious ish place? I just always assumed since my mom went there. Then again I guess a lot of places were and are pretty normal now.

Ya it is but I’d rather pay big money to have professors teach me and not PAs. Idk man they sold me on the school I did get into CSM but I wasn’t gonna pay that much.

Not sure what you plan on doing with and engineering degree but definitely look into if getting a masters right after your undergrad is worth it. Depending on what you want to do you won't need a masters or you can get a starting job and hopefully the company pays for some if not all of your masters.
I design automated saws and there is absolutely no need for me to have my masters if I stick with this company but they still pay for some classes. I do regret not taking my FE exam right out of college because I now pretty much forget how to do any upper level math shit because the most I use is trig. I don't plan on getting my PE but I still wish I would have taken the FE already just in case. If I go the masters route it will probably be an mba.

All of this advice sucks. Prepare for a lot of text. I’m gonna tell you about all of the actual important things I wish I knew my freshman year. Read this. Read it again. Remember it. Any other freshman read it too and remember. Listen to the kids who are in college or just have graduated. Don’t even give any thought to the old fuck who graduated 20 years ago or the 19 year old in trade school.
Background for me: about to be a senior at Notre Dame. Smoked pot in HS but barely drank or partied. Relatively shy kid going into college. Pretty much have experienced it all and dealt with a bunch of issues in the process.
Schoolwise:
First off. Don’t even think about grad school yet. Unless it’s med school. Shouldn’t even cross your mind at this point. To anyone in this thread who’s mentioning it, ????? The kid is 18 fucking years old. He most likely has no idea what he wants to do with his life.
Good on you for going to a liberal arts school honestly. 99% of kids your age, and even a lot seniors and people working jobs after college have no idea what they want to do with their life. I was an engineering major my first semester, ended up switching to economics and computing. Take a wide range of classes and see what you actually enjoy. Do your research on what careers you can go into in the classes you like. Go to the career center. You don’t need to know what you want to do with your life. I promise you. But make sure you’re always looking into new types of jobs and such.
you need to set goals. A lot of people struggle in college bc they don’t have and end goal that they’re working towards bc they don’t know what they want to do career wise.So set goals. Academic goals. Fitness goals. Travel goals. Girl goals. Any goals.
At the same time, you don’t need to be perfect. For most careers besides the cream of the crop tech, consulting, finance, etc (or med school) firms, you don’t need perfect grades. You need a B honestly. Anything about a 3.0 you put on a resume and get your foot in the door to any industry if you network and interview well. You’re gonna fail tests. It’s fine. It won’t affect your grade as much as you think. It goes without saying that higher is better tho.
Talk in class. Profs like that better than kids who say nothing and do well on tests. 99% of profs are great people who wanna help. Go to office hours. They’ll give you tips and hints that you won’t get in class. Go to class. Even if you’re hungover and can’t process anything, just go. Even if attendance isn’t required. Helps U Stay motivated. Keeps your work ethic up.
Network. Professors, Job fairs, parents, friends. Not super important until at least a year in. Don’t worry about it right now. Always good to talk to new people whenever though
Cheating is everywhere. You’re gonna cheat. Cheating on hw isn’t right. But it’s okay. Prob a necessity at times. You need to learn the material though. You will get fucked in the ass hard if you do not learn it. Bc it adds up test after test and you can’t learn an entire class a few weeks before a final to try and save your grade.
Girls, Drugs, social life:
If you have a girlfriend, break up with her. 99% of HS relationships don’t last. It’ll make things easier. Try and do it before the summer too honestly.
you will probably have a hard time fitting in or making friends quickly if you do not drink. Not going to lie. Get a good fake. Easy way to meet a lot of people in the beginning if u have a good fake and can get booze for people. You’re not gonna meet your best friends right away. It could be months. You may have to move social circles. But you’ll find your people. Very few people do not. At the end of the day, loving your school comes down to the people you surround yourself with, not the school itself.
This is is your time to try your drugs if it’s your cup of tea. It’s limitless and absolutely free flowing at college, no matter where you go. Try your coke. Your Molly. Your acid. Nows the fucking the man. You’ll know what you like and what you don’t like pretty quickly. Stay away from painkillers and bars. Get hard drugs from someone who is a reliable dealer that you know well or test it yourself. Be safe. Have friends around looking out for you. If youre a smoker, try and meet people off campus do you can just smoke and leave shit there. Much less to worry about if you don’t have weed in the dorm. Weed will cure your worst hangover, remember that.
Be friendly. Talk to as many people as you can. Make a ton of friends. Go out a bunch. As you get older you will have less and less friends overall, but they will your closest of friends. Forgive people. People are stupid In college. They make mistakes. Forgive. But not too much. Cut people off if they break your trust too many times. That’s a personal thing that you have to decide. Don’t be that asshole drunk. Don’t try and fight people. Be goofy and a lover when you’re drunk. It’s better that way.
Domt give a fuck about what people think of you. Drunk guys talk so much shit. You’ll hear it constantly. The sooner you learn to not care what others think of you, the better you’re gonna do.
As for girls. Fuck anyone who’s saying don’t go fuck around with a bunch of girls. They’re likely ugly, horrible with women, or have never banged a hot girl in their life. Probably a combination of all three. Remember the type of people that frequent this site. You may not do drugs and may not regret that. But I guarantee if you don’t go and fuck some, you will regret it. Their is no better feeling than going out with your friends, flirting with some smoke all night and bringing her back with you. I promise you that.
Confidence is is the key. There are a million brown haired average looking average height guys in college. You have to stand out. Confidence and humor help a lot. You’re gonna strike out. A ton. Keep trying. Once you get the hang of it your confidence grows exponentially.
Freshman/sophomore year are the time to do the drugs and to sleep around. By junior year people start looking for relationships and start to think more about careers. You can go wild all four years if u want. Wouldn’t recommend. Takes a toll on your body. Don’t get a juul. Just bum cigs when you’re drunk and out so you don’t get super addicted.
Friends/family:
your close friends will develop over time. Develop trusting relationships. Tell each other everything. The more you tell each other the closer you’ll become. When you tell people important things/share emotions, it’s easy to figure out who your real friends are. Look for those ride or die friends. Those ones that will literally go to war for you. Fuck anyone else. Like I said previously, you’ll prob have less and less friends every year.
Try and have some girl friends and friends that are like “father figures” of your group. Women tend to be more rational, give better advice, and are easier to talk to emotionally. Having a guy friends who’s like a father figure who tells you when you’re being too stupid or doing too many drugs and will call you out for it is someone good to have around. You’ll listen to a guy friend quicker than a girl friend about this stuff.
Call your parents. A lot. It means the world to them. They worry about you a ton and your well being is their first priority. Not your grades. Promise. They can help you with a lot of shit and probably are a lot more rational than your dumbass 18 year old friends
health:
if if you worked out in HS do not stop. Coupled with drugs and booze it can lead to depression very quickly. If you played a sport in HS, play club in college. You’ll meet a bunch of new friends and have parties and mixers to go to. Staying fit will make you feel better after a night of partying and keep your lungs decent if you smoke a lot.
MOST IMPORTANTLY
focus on your mental health. Talk to your friends about it. Go to the counseling center if you need help. So so so many people in college struggle with anxiety and depression. People around you that you wouldn’t even know. Talk to your friends. Make sure they’re okay. Have your friends look out for you. Get help if you need it. Therapists, doctors, even drugs if you need it.
Honestly if you’re a normal kid, you’re gonna have a blast. The people who struggle in college are the ones who were weird in HS.
Youre gonna hit the lowest of lows in college and the highest of highs. You gotta just keep a balance. At the end of the day, I dealt with a horrible breakup in the beginning of school, have dealt with major depression and anxiety for the past couple years, and done a bunch of drugs and partied a lot. But it’ll all work out in the end my guy. Remember that.
I’ve been in dark dark places where I thought there literally was no way out of, but I’ve got a group of friends that I didn’t even know it was possible to love as mich as I love them, asmoke show girlfriend who’s always there for me through thick and thin, a bright future ahead, and countless unforgettable memories. I wouldn’t change a second of it even if I could. College is about the experience and making mistakes and learning from them. The experiences you have in college are the ones that shape who you really become. You have four years and a clean slate. Have a blast brotha
