I kept seeing clips frome "hoji" on ig, they called him a freeride legend. I just couldn't understand that seeing as Nick mcnutt has a way better trick collection and in my opinion better style yet his tgr vids have almost no views and it's rare that people I talk to know of him. This got me thinking, who is the most underated skier right now, Mcnutt? B Mack? Comp skiers in general? Someone else?
If you think Mcnutt is a better big mountain skier than hoji you need your head examined. Mcnutt definitely has a bigger bag of tricks but hoji has been in the top 5 big mountain skiers in the world for at least 5, maybe 10 years.
Hugo Harrison (retired, so not exactly "right now") FTW when it comes to big mountain legends nobody talks about. He's the king of bombing shit.

his segment in Focused is so gnarly

So your argument is "he's been ranked higher so he must be better" . What? You just admitted the Mcnutt has better tricks. Hoji Just bombs shit
Dylan Manley is insanely underrated. Unique and dope style. Unlikely but I fucken hope he gets a real ski spot
Legend too. The industry needed Vishnu

If we're comparing big mountain skiers, Hoji wins hands down. McNutt has mad tricks but there's a difference between jibbing pillows and building bc booters and skiing properly big shit. Hoji is a big mountain skier, McNutt skis lots of big lines but it's an apples to oranges comparison IMO. McNutt could be better compared to guys like Pollard, Benchetler, and Pettit whereas the skiing Hoji does is reminiscent of McConkey or Seth.

you need to go watch some MSP videos from the late 2000s

I get what you're saying but I have Nick land switch off pillow lines that would push hojis boundaries.
CryptnoI get what you're saying but I have Nick land switch off pillow lines that would push hojis boundaries.
And I've seen hoji ski lines that would push Nick's. That's why I dislike direct comparisons of different ski styles. It's the same as when people compare comp freestylers to film part skiers, it doesn't work. There should be clearer lines separating big mountain skiers from backcountry skiers. It'd be like comparing Ian McIntosh to Pep Fujas; both legends in the bc but totally different skill sets and styles.
if you want to compare stats try football or baseball. otherwise just go out and ski and enjoy the content that people put out and maybe make some of your own. its all about fun not the views, or the bag of tricks, or the recognition. the real1s do it for the love and the passion for the sport

Lord of stompville

I have watched as much footage of him over the years as I could find and never once saw him hesitate at the top of a cliff. He had even McConkry beat in that regard.
AlexUrquhartJonah Elston
Yes. I rate him high, yet not "high". That's why he can ski! One of several shots I got with him.
Watch the mechanical nature of vanular in high five doing a 7 and 10 in the halfpipe and youll notice that pretty much nobody in skiing has the coordination he has. He kind of reminds me of the kid who gets up to a 48 ranking in halo 2 without even trying.
Really gifted.
His johnny rotten edit wasnt to great though. Its hard to compete with the nopolers who have been going without poles since they were kids.
My buddy Andrew Egan (@andre_wegan on gram) is a mad man. Mad humble with an insane amount of tricks. Got one of my favorite switch landings. Slept on for sure.

I thought Mcnutt didn't ski big mountain ?

Not like hoji. The speed size and techcnicality doesn’t even come close in Mcnutts part there.

TF are you looking at?

Start at 4:00 for the big mountain stuff. McNutt is a sick skier for sure but he’s known BC trick guy not one of the greatest big mountain skiers of all time. But you don’t think straight airing huge cliffs at speed is difficult so idk what to tell you.

I guess what I was getting at is hoji is a big mountain skier and Mcnutt is a bc skier. Comparing them is pretty silly.
However, hoji is a much better big mountain skier than Mcnutt is a bc skier

I never said he didn't. I said that the bulk of his filmography has been jib and mini golf line oriented. Nick McNutt fucking throws down but he's not the same type of skier as Hoji. It doesn't diminish Nick's skiing to say that Hoji skis bigger lines because that's not the focus of Nick's career. It's fucking freeskiing dude just respect everyone's game and the variety of athletic achievement we get to witness.

Impressive no doubt but lower consequence lines than what Hoji was stepping up to in his prime. I would suggest watching MSP movies between 07-13 to see some seriously technical skiing.

dude sends, he's been in a bunch of keeshlife edits/movies
Mike Hornbeck after seeing his last movie. He got kinda quiet for a few years there and I think a lot of people slept on him, but he just showed that he still has the illest style and is still one of the top street riders in the game.
I know the dude has had a huge career, but again I feel as though a lot slept on him/forgot about him, making him real underrated all of a sudden. His film was heavy and shows he is still getting down really hard.
Also Tanner Hall. Everyone talks about Candide but T Hall is for sure the greatest free skier to ever do it. Case and point - every single season he has ever had.

Hmmmm... That's a tough one. Your statement is certainly open to controversy.
I'd love to see the ski version of Deawon Song Vs Rodney Mullen.
SkiBoss VS The Cat
The undisputed North American Champion VS Team Euro.
Each production team could handle their own footage and have an online showdown for King of the Hill.
They've both still got it.
It's possible for Nick Mcnutt to be underrated and Hoji to still be the absolute king of Big Mountain.
Celebrate both, why troll all this negativity towards someone who's clearly at the pinnacle of an aspect of skiing just to save some face when you simply made too bold of a claim?

FYI this is a thread about underrated skiers. I don't think Tanner qualifies.

Haven’t seen anyone do a nose butter cork 7 in the streets like him.
Also, vishnu forever.

Unpopular opinion but I don’t actually rate his style. Can’t deny he’s an absolute ski legend and amazing skier though

You don't become a legend overnight. Anyone who hasn't seen it should search out Hoji's segment in Level 1's Ballance. I was at Whistler that summer when this kind of dorky Canadian kid showed up and skied better than pretty much all the big name pros. He had these cork 7's that were bigger and smoother than anyone else on the glacier. "All I really want, he told me, is to be a big mountain skier." That was in the year 2000.
