curious, do local ski shop owners appraise and buy used gear like car dealerships on a regular basis?

Some do. I've known quite a few shops to sell on consignment as well. Just call and ask.
Yeah some will. In my experience we got a really low offer from the shop and ended up selling on here instead.
Sometimes. Lots of shops around tahoe have consignment sections.
My local shop used to let you sell your ski gear, and they would take a set percentage of profit.
I've found a few that do, I'm wondering if anyone in Salt Lake sells to a particular shop somewhat regularly? I might be moving about 10-12 pairs a month during the winter if I find that they sell in a timely manner for the most part
Some definitely do. I've even done the appraising before for a shop.
I also low-key appraised things super cheap and then bought them like a week later ;)
There is a chain of shops called Play it again Sports that sells everyone’s used gear. Ski selection is usually pretty terrible, but hey I got a surfboard there once

Play it again fucking robs you. They're like the GameStop of sporting goods, you will never get a fair price.

Play-It-Again does suck when you're the seller, but they saved my ass a few times when I snapped hockey sticks which is their primary focus (at least in Maine.)

I get how their business works, I just don't think people should sell them skis. If you need to flip used hockey sticks or cleats, sure, go to play it again because you'll have a hard time selling that stuff yourself. But if you're selling skis, there's so many ways to sell them yourself and make decent money.

Amen to that, wqlked into my local (grand rapids mi) yeaterday and they were asking 70 for a pair of straight stick dynasters from the 90s.
Yeah I dropped off two pairs yesterday. Waiting to see if they'll sell

What happened to basic communication skills? I know it is just so scary, but pick up the phone, call your shop and ask.
