I have a pair of race skis that were given to me, but I am not a racer. My parents don't understand why I want to buy new skis. Keep in mind that I am not asking them to buy me skis, I am asking permission for them to let me buy my skis myself. Thanks!
If it's your money you earned through a job, I think its dumb that they won't let you buy what you want. If they gave you that money as allowance, then they can say what you can and cannot buy imo.
I agree with above statement^ if you earned it through any means other than an allowance.. you get to decide what to do with it!
Tell them that if you get good enough.. you have the possibility of being sponsored by Target, which can fuel your mother’s Franzia boxed wine addiction.
....In all seriousness though tell them you’ll likely get bored with normal alpine downhill & would like have the appropriate equipment to take full advantage of your untapped creative outlook on the mountain.
Growing up in the Midwest I Iikely would’ve given up on skiing — or at least not have skied nearly as much w/ out the introduction of full wood core, lively twin tip skis.
They open a closed door that makes a fun, outdoor recreational “sport” 10x more fun.
tell them there all mountain and buy some basic atomics or lines or pull out the fuck you I'm a park rat card
Plenty of all mountain skis are twin tips these days. Just say that and get a pair of park skis.
Send em a message of boiling your tips up on your race skis
Go ride rails on your race skis until the edges fall out? It might teach you to be a better skier?

I only hit rails for a day on race skis, and it's a bit harder but not by much, aslong as you lock in you'll be fine. The next race I went to I got in the bottom quarter, because I literally was unable to carve (I normally place in the top quarter)
If its your cash man get on the bus , get those park skis and go skiing. Once you have them and skied them they cant go back to the shop.
Get your race skis, break the tails, and bend them upwards.
Every single response I've seen here has been really good and helpful and I'd like to throw mine in the ring..
Have you considered murdering your parents?
ColingarnesHave you considered murdering your parents?
you need to see a doctor
Park riding (and honestly I would call it freestyle to your parents so they don't get the wrong idea that you're giong to spend all your time in the park) is a specialized discipline of the sport, and you can communicate that to them in a mature way. You wouldn't be safe mountain biking on a race bike with slick tires and no suspension, and same goes for having the right skis for the right discipline of skiing. If you're gonna ski switch in the park you need the right gear so you can actually do that with some success, and maybe they don't fully understand that right now but you can explain that to them. Also, you could offer to sell your current skis to show them you're serious about making a real switch to a different sport.
And if you're you're gonna be skiing park regardless of your skis, wouldn't they rather have you be doing it safely and properly?

When I first started skiing my parents bought me crappy beat up race skis. For my first two years, I taught myself how to grind rails on them and learned basic jump tricks. if I were you I would do the same thing and when you get good enough, show your parents and say the only way I can improve more is by getting park skis. Or just break them "accidentally" and tell them if you get park skis they won't break.

If you're new to skiing this makes more sense than trying to get park skis right now. No idea what your situation is though OP
When your dad is in a good mood or drunk show him one of your favorite edits an persuade him you need them.
Can't believe no one has said the obvious...
Would you rather have me on park skis or heroin?

Preferably a Hood Crew edit.
Your parents are probably just tired of you bothering them with this shit. Just man up and buy another god damn pair of skis if that's what you want Jesus kid I'm trying to watch the game here!
Would you buy a car that DOESNT go in reverse? NO.
The skis should go in reverse too.

I was about to link this. OP, start reading
Just phrase it in a way that they will understand. Something like,
"This would be like trying to drive with a putter".
This would work if they like golf, pick something that they used to be passionate about

Just use the magic word "Safety"
Maybe point out that the injuries one faces racing are far worse than the injuries one would acquire from skiing in a park.
you could always just buy an old pair of boards from a friend of some within your community thats getting rid of an old pair, and then just deal with the consequences from your parents afterwards..

Ask for forgiveness, not permission.
I had this problem, just tell em it’ll be your “birthday present” then convince them with end of season sales. Parents always fall for that.

How does $5 / 5 sliders at Arby’s sound?

Dude the coach flipped out at me, it was the funniest shit, because I litterally couldn't give 2 shits because those skis were too small (I didn't expect to grow from 5"3 to 5"6) and it was the last race
Just say, pretty please (with a cherry on top optional)
I remember when I first started mowing lawns for money. I wasn't old enough to own a credit card and there aren't any ski shops in my little rural town. I figured out how to purchase skis online by sending a money order in the mail or using paypal (paypal was still pretty new). My parents were shocked when ski gear started showing up in the mail. I bought a pair of JO Pros and a pair of Hellbents. My mother wasn't happy with either choice.

see if anyone wants to trade a pair of double enders for your race skis

Phillydog1BUMP
i have removed your ability to bump
Edited because I got people confused. See if anyone you know could use them and sell them to them.
I do this often - sell things from old hobbies to fund new ones. :)
And just tell parents the skis are the wrong skis for what you want to do.

Man maybe you should just cut your losses and buy a cool fishtank or something
Yea maybe just spend that money on a new laptop and spend your time asking advice on NS and then proceed to not take any and then ask for more
So wait .. are your parents still alive or did you take my advice?
