It's all in the title. When I think about what he did/does, I can't help but think about him as a legend. People either love him or hate him. Why is that ?
Most legit people love him because he's a massive inspiration and is one of the best all around skiers to exist. Most gapers hate him because they see some old clips of him online acting like an ass and assume that's all he is... or they laugh at the clip of him blowing up both ankles because well, gapers are a fucking cancer on this sport... like the Bunch.

I never saw him being an ass online tho. But yeah...
My ankles... Then he comes back years later and stomps a dub backie. Who else does that?
THE GUYS A BEAST!! SLAYS PARKS, BIG MOUNTAIN, URBAN, EVEN FUCKING MOGULS!! HIS HAD SOME REALLY GNARLY INJURIES AND IS STILL AT IT. DONE SO MUCH FOR THE SPORT AND YOU CAN TELL HE JUST REALLY LOVES IT. I GET HE CAN BE QUITE ABRASIVE BUT I GENERALLY GIVE HIM A PASS. THE DUDE LIKES WHAT HE LIKE AND DOES WHAT HE DOES WHAT YOU SEE IS WHAT YOU GET. EVEN IF YOU DONT LIKE HIM YOU HAVE TO RESPECT HIM
I think his movie summed it up well when it said that the guy isnt a rolemodel, he's a skier, plain and simple. I respect him because he has done so much for the sport we all love, not because he's someone i wanna look up to
KneesSalsasI never saw him being an ass online tho. But yeah...
"REAL MOUNTAINS" yeahhh its a classic.

Holy shit I forgot about this. I didn't thought it was that bad. He's too spontaneous, that's it. Only thing I found pretty dumb is him insulting his ex girlfriend online. But that's nothing to do with ski.

One of the best skiers of all time, gone through some hard shit, seems a lot humbler now, and is still an absolute maniac on skis. Love him.
Tanner is an OG and deserves respect for helping to bring freeskiing into a new era. He was a little cocky at times but when you are one of the best you earned the right to be.
If you hate him, go watch like a lion. It’s on slvsh’s YouTube. Tell me if you still hate him after that! One of the most inspiring skiers period. No one is perfect...
One of the GOAT skiers in our sport. I love him as a skier, but can't stand the white, rasta thing he's always had going on.
Well, he is a huge inspiration and top dog, always has been. Straight legend but the man is 34 (?) and still rides harder than almost anyone else, the man is an unstoppable god on a mission and it's inspiring as hell. Honestly is there anyone that hates him? Nope
I think his style is so Raw... He has got more balls than most skiers for sure.
NobassettI think his movie summed it up well when it said that the guy isnt a rolemodel, he's a skier, plain and simple. I respect him because he has done so much for the sport we all love, not because he's someone i wanna look up to
!

Happened to be tv ? Huh

Thats sums it up. People grow and change over years and decades. He was a real shit up to his 30s. I met him 4 years ago in the airport and had a quick 15 min chat. Guy was super humble; he could have turned me away cause he was in a small hurry, but he took the time to chat with a fan. We just talked about snow conditions in the BC interior.
Tanner is true to the sport. He was one of the first on the scene and I dont think he will ever quit skiing. His financial deals are what kept him going when no one else would put up the cash to pay for trips and contests. He is still putting out sick shots and working hard to get media out there. I try to do the same, ride hard without life worries and put out media on the off time. Editing is a long process and filming process sucks; but he hasnt stopped. I give him credit for that.
He has done an incredible amount for skiing. One of the best ever.
He, CR and Evan Raps used to know my roommate back in 2002 in Squaw. They hung out a few times. They were all pretty cool, never seemed to present a huge attitude. I've heard of him being a dick, but in my limited time around him he was pretty cool. He definitely did not have a cocky "do you know who I am" vibe about him.
Many people on this website don't like him because of the "Real Mountains" comment. He may not have worded it well, but he has a right to his opinion, and as someone who dominated in all aspects of the sport his opinion has some relevance. And as one of the greatest park/pipe skiers ever I think it really hit hurt lots of the park rats here. People can deny it all they want, but there really is something to that. Lots of kids felt betrayed, they had been hearing for years about how big mountain was superior and now their hero was going to the other side. I think he could have worded it better, but subtlety is not his strong suit. He probably could have conveyed his feeling that big mountains in AK are the ultimate playgrounds for skiing without alienating lots of his fans.
Regardless, the guy has done quite a bit for skiing.
I like him because he's a dope skier, inspired a bunch of people, kind of didn't give a fuck and was in it just to be in it.
I hate his fucking capslock and he wasn't very good with social media sometimes. That said some of the shitstorms he created were amusing.
All in all I'm kind of bummed he nuked his NS account. That said, it was a smart move on his point. He's a good skier, he's probably a pretty cool guy, but he can come across as a dick sometimes through social media and it wasn't really helping him much.
FUCKING SEND IT SON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
One of the best skiers of all time, crushes across disciplines. If you haven't seen it 'Like a Lion' is incredible.
Met him five years ago at a bar in Copper. I was like 16 or 17 at the time and he couldn’t have been nicer. A buddy who i was with is from Amsterdam, which certainly helped spark the conversation lol.
The best athletes always have their quirks. Tanner had a few missteps along the way, but there is no denying he is still one of the greatest skiers alive. People grow up and change. Judge tanner by his incredible career. Don’t form a character assessment based on mistakes he made when he was younger, cockier, and immature.

Yeah, I also feel he grew up and changed a lot. When you are praised for you ski your whole life, it's easy to let it go to your head from time to time. He is now the same awesome skier + more mature.

I don't think he worded it wrong at all I think people like you just got it twisted. He didn't "switch sides." there is no switching sides. big mountain skiing is skiing. Park skiing is skiing and he still skis park. But there is more to skiing than just the park and If you were troubled by his words it was because you yourself are one of the people 'taking sides' and haven't realized that the mountains have more to offer than just rails and jumps.

I'm actually not troubled by his words at all. I almost never ski the park. I could really care less about park and urban. What I am saying is that it bothered lots of people on this website, and it did. I was here back then, and there was huge backlash. I don't know if you were here or not, but lots of park rats bitched about it. To be honest, I was being very careful in the wording of my post, I actually DO think the ultimate skiing is found in AK, and I don't think Tom Wallisch is one of the 50 best skiers in the world. I don't know ANYONE who can ski both park and big mountain at a high level who prefers park, and Tanner was basically saying that. He was saying that the ultimate in skiing is in the big mountains, which I wholeheartedly agree with. I was careful with my words because I did not want to start another park/big mountain war, there have been enough of those here. But I actually agree with you, Tanner was saying unequivocally that he thought big mountain skiing was the ultimate skiing, and it pissed people here off. I was definitely not one of those people, I actually agree completely with Tanner. To be honest, when I lived in Tahoe I would take my twin tips out and ski park and bumps once every 15 ski days or so, if that. Sometimes I would take my fat boards into the park, but I really did not care to ski park, and I still don't. Now I only ski 35-40 days a year, and I am not going to spend them in the park. I probably take one or two park laps a year.
And I would not personally say Tanner switched sides, but I remember threads here where lots of kids seemed to feel that way. Henrik Windstedt said something like "these kids who only ski park, they are terrible skiers" back around 2004 and people here went nuts.
I have never actually slid a rail, just a mail box once. I don't think that is going to change. My ski days are basically all at Mammoth, and that mountain is too good for me to spend time in the park. I have no problem with people skiing park it that is what they want, but I have no interest in it. I am older than most here, I grew up skiing bumps back east. We dreamed about Squaw, Jackson and Chamonix. When I hear kids talk about wanting to go out west and "where is the best park" I actually feel sorry for them. Don't get me wrong, if you want to ski park go for it, but I would not base a move west on who has the best park, you can find park in the east. Lots of mountains out west have great terrain as well as rails/jumps, if you spend all your time doing that sort of stuff you will really miss out on one of the great elements of skiing.
I hope my post does not touch off a park vs. big mountain debate. There have been enough of those.

Sounds like we're pretty much in agreement. I'll agree that it is understandable that NSers got upset but not because they're right, only because a large portion of the members over the years have been children with no experience on anything larger than a flat box - both in or outside of the park. On the other hand every other respectable skier worth his salt should've know where Tanner was coming from.

Why do you have an NS account
Cade2Why do you have an NS account
NS has always had a huge presence of people who prefer big mountain/pow/trees over park. Nothing new here.
I didn't like Tanner growing up because I was a big Dumont fan and subscribed hard to the rivarly. THall always seemed like a cocky douche. I can't deny the love he has for skiing or the fact he is one of the best skiers ever. In terms of longevity and versatility, he can only really be matched by Candide. He seems much more centered now and I respect the hell outta him. Long live the LION

I wonder if basketball forums get threads like "Michael Jordan: Why do you love him or hate him?"
Or "Muhammad Ali: Why do you love him or hate him?"
Or "Wayne Gretzky: Why do you love him or hate him?"
Do people hate him? I get being able to call him strange, maybe you don’t like the rasta or drugs, sure you can pull up videos or comments of him in the past having an attitude but which of us hasn’t at one point or another? Considering how he (and of course Candide) are basically the more versatile equivalent to Shaun White in snowboarding, the level of hate doesn’t even compare. I don’t know him but you never hear any douchy stories of peoples actual encounters with him. And he’s progressing the sport for all, unlike White who wants to be the only one at the top. Also loved him appearing in a Virtika vid. Lesh may be a trustafarian but was a good fit for the video. Also if you look into his real mountains call out he was probably just bummed they weren’t there and givin em hell—a lot easier to give him the benefit of the doubt over that

ohhhh yeah you do
i agree with a lot of the other stuff you said though, no one can deny his passion and his love for making skiing what it is
Tanner is one of those individuals that rose to fame very quickly at a young age and the attitude came with it. He got caught up in things but has since settled down and found himself in the big mountain ski scene and loving backcountry trips. I think once he put all the contest/partying nonsense behind him he really became someone people can look up to again. His old segments from yearbook and propaganda are legendary though. While TBC was great, couldnt stand his attitude in it.

agreed. he fucking murked in TBC though. with the obvious stuff taking the spotlight, it's possible to forget the other stuff like that sw9 he stomps first hit on that big booter and other stuff. plus at that time, him riding to flock of seagulls was a welcome change of pace
i think most of it has already been covered here. I've gotten the chance to hang out with him a couple of times, and the thing that marked me the most is his absolute, unbridled passion for skiing which may have sometimes come across as arrogance or holier than thou attitude when really, he just wants everyone else to be super fucking stoked about skiing too.
Cade2Who actually hates thall?
Probably that chick he sent dick pics to who then posted them online for all to see.
I've seen t-hall's boner /claim
Growing up I absolutely loved T-Hall, I used to watch Pop Yer Bottles on the way to school every other day. After he busted both knees on the motocross style jump he kind of fell into a hole and I started to just see him as a washout. Then this year he came out with Ring the Alarm and I'm back to loving the shit out of him. To see someone that old make such an awesome comeback is nuts. Man is 34 and hitting gnarly-ass urban.

All the guys you listed slay big mountain stuff, I'd say most non-NFL/NHL playing 34 year olds can take the kind of hits he takes doing his urban shit and walk the next day. JP was about 34 when he did his segment for Revolver which had some sweet urban shots but none of it was as gnarly as the stuff T-Hall is doing
Absolute legend and inspiration. The only negative thing I have to say is if you are an owner of a ski brand you need to represent it well, and posting photos of destroyed edges, and snapped skis isn't cool it's discouraging for consumers. I want to see pictures of edges fully intact and crazy flex without snapping. Skating is different boards are so cheap, but when people have to spend over $400 on a pair of skis in my opinion durability is a major factor. If I was an owner of a ski company I would not want any of my riders to post their destroyed skis. But otherwise, Tanner has pathed the way for so many skiers and is an inspiration. He did a triple backflip the other day and he's 34 years old!
He's done almost everything there is to do in skiing, had two almost career-ending injuries, fell into a dip pit of substance abuse and mental health issues with the passing of CR and everything else going on with him, and still comes firing back with some of the heaviest skiing to date. the man loves skiing with every single fiber in his body, and its a pleasure to watch. he's hitting an incredible stride right now and is showing no signs of letting up at all.

skiing is more than just urban. as you get older you gravitate towards things that will allow you to continue to ski well into your 50-60s. Tanner doing urban is cool and all but you cant discredit the others because they are not doing urban. pretty sure tomahawking down a big mountain line can hurt a hell of a lot more than coming off a rail early and hitting the ground 3 ft below you.
