So over the course of 2 years ive been dabbling in reggae music. Recently ive decided to fall down the reggae rabbit hole and explore its past and present. So far my favorite era would be the 1980's and '70s. Modern day artists I'm really digging are soja, damian marley, and skillinjah. Curious to see what everyone else listens to. Old, new, dancehall, dub, give me some recommendations!
Matchet, Addis Pablo, and Steel Pulse are pretty chill for modern (and the first two are relatively unknown), obviously Bob Marley/Wailers, Peter Tosh, etc. are good for older stuff, not super into reggae but those are what I listen to mainly when I'm in the mood.
Reggae is weird and incompatible with skiing IMO

Steel Pulse, Eek a Mouse (Peeni Walli) and Bob Marley (Misty Morning) are my main guys. Then there are some others like Gregory Isaacs (Night Nurse) and Dennis Brown (Hold Tight). I listen to a lot more but don't remember the names, lot of the stuff I know is through my father.
If you're interested and want to know more good songs made by these guys, ask me. I'm only naming one song for each artist because I don't want to sit here for hours

A few years ago Tanner Hall released a movie with reggae music that was made specifically for the movie

I camped with a guy huuuuge into all things Jamaica this passed summer. All day and night for a week we listened to popcaan, vybz kartel, mavado, collie budz, tommy lee sparta, Charlie black, konshens.
I can't name specific songs but I was loving all of it.
Anyone ever listened to the band "the hip abduction" discovered them after watching the TGR movie "Tight Loose"... Super chill Reggae.
I occasionally listen to Rebelution, SOJA, Iration, The Green, and Katchafire
Bands like Rebelution, the tribal seeds, etc make want to cut myself.
It's like "We fucking get it, you're cool as fuck cause you smoke weed!" Now shut the fuck up.
Play Reggae song then insert horrible lyrics about packing bowls, lighting bowls, hiding bowls from your parents, lighting the green, turning it black, I smoked weed once how bout that. Roll a join, light a spliff, we're liek so high our thoughts just drift. My parents just don't understand me, I'm so fucking woke, pack up a bong and take a fat toke.
Literally those bands are the shittest. The fucking shittest. I get that they got popular because 12 year old are like , omg weed sounds so cool! I wanna be cool! Then they try it, put some rasta posters on their wall and listen to garbage music about smoking weed.
But sweet jesus. Not the biggest fan of some of those bands in general, but they would be tolerable if they either didn't sing, or realized that there's more topics you can write a song about than weed.
Other than that I like reggae.
I fuck with it and listen to it while I ski but imo people like tanner hall take it too far with the dreads and shit they clearly feel like they relate tothe music and embody it when that's just not true. Listen to it and love it but don't pretend like youre all that unless you are

Seriously? Reggae works great with skiing. Take Numinous as an example, the seggy with the reggae music was booler.

Try Damien Marley, hes collabed with some rappers and has a pretty accessible sound if you wanna compare it to other reggae artists rn imo
If you’re in to the older reggae check out cutty ranks Freddie mcgregor super cat Buju Banton and Barrington levy
Steel Pulse, Yellowman, Jimmy Cliff, Bob Marley & the Wailers, Black Uhuru, Third World, Bunny Wailer and Eek-A- mouse are all great composers. My favorite out of all has to be Ganja Smuggling by Eek A Mouse and Roller Skates by The Steel Pulse.
I love your style honestly

yeah I find those songs to be very repetitive but it still has a nice groove to it
Slightly Stoopid will probably always be my favorite, seen them so many times. SOJA is great live, The Hip Abduction, The Movement, Collie Budz, Damian Marley, Stephen Marley, even Ziggy is good if you want upbeat kind of reggae. Michael Franti goes along with that upbeat good reggae too! Dirty Heads was good when they had a dirty reggae style but their shit is getting way too mainstream to be considered reggae anymore. Toots and the Maytals are always cool as hell to see. Check out Giant Panda Guerilla Dub Squad, and Spiritual Rez. Landon McNamara has a really cool voice. Stick Figure has a cool sound with all the classic reggae sounds in their songs. Iration and Rebelution are okay, but not as into them anymore since I discovered there’s better reggae out there.
