IMO if you paid retail for things that are easy to find used for cheap, then that is a problem.
If it makes you feel better, I spent $5,000 of the $8,000 I saved this summer on a snowmobile.
I had a few jackets, saga shit went on sale last year and I bought a bunch of stuff. Had way too much stuff. Saga stuff went on sale again this year and I bought more stuff. I don't even know why.
Only good thing is that it was cheap as hell, and one hoodie I ordered a second of for no reason got stolen this weekend so now I still have one. I might have to do my own saga sale at some point and get rid of some of these jackets and hoodies.
I just kind of figured ski shit is expensive. Now I don't really need to buy anything ever again. But I should still ditch some of these jackets.
I def have an impulse problem for cheap gear. I think it's what we all do.
1/3 of my summer earnings went towards ski stuff. And I'm stoked as hell
If it's any consolation I've spent like $3000 that I made during the summer on skiing related things such as a pass, new ON3Ps, pivots, various outerwear, list goes on...
If you have a dad loaning you money it sounds like you have the opposite of a problem
D.B.My jacket and pants were 1040.
Thanks to people like you spending maad stacks, the industry is staying alive... I feel like most of this site is cheap AF (including me) and therefore only buy heavily discounted items which of course supports ski companies much less.
But yeah I'm fairly responsable for not spending when or where i don't NEED to but not with ski gear... it's my soft spot haha
I think most of this site can relate to buying an unnecessary amount of gear including myself, so either you don’t have a problem or we all do.
When we were on our way back from a fire with the crew, we had a truck already loaded to max with firefighting gear, and I walked out of a 10 minute stop at a ski shop with some armada jj 2.0s. I don't think you have a problem. Or maybe I just have one too.
You guys don't even want to see my ON3P order history.

this is me, i have bought a ton of unnecessary shit over the summer for the ski season but more than half was used and bought off ns for less than half price or at least a year old. Found a pair of tyrolia 16's that ashop never sold that are the orange colorway so i picked them up for just under 180$ USD

The industry doesn't need people like him, it's doing just fine on its own- just ask the MD of Vail.
Sorry D.B, but you got mugged off, mate. $1040 for jacket and pants? You earn too much money.

That's a fair argument, Vail is doing fine but if we look more on the gear side of things, your right it may not be needed but it certainly helps keep variety. If no one bought expensive gear, no one would make expensive gear, gives more options

For every day-to-day walking uphill with skis (I do this a lot) I need outerwear that is comfortable, breathable, light, moves well in any situation, and built to withstand extreme and extended use.

I understand where you're coming from... I did a ski-instructor course last year in BC. My gear set me back about £500 (about $650) including thermals, gloves and socks, and that suited me all season. Including one day where it hit -27°C in the morning.
Not sure what brand you paid for dude, but you got ripped off - whether by the manufacturer or the store retailer (or both).

Did you just try and draw a parallel between the gear needed for an instructor course and ski touring?

Read carefully, I was only talking about outerwear (ie. jacket and pants).
$1040 is far more than you NEED to spend. I skied all day in every condition BC can throw at you (including some ski-touring myself), for less than half that.

I simply can't agree with you on this. There's a huge difference between standard outerwear and touring gear. It weight, its materials etc. Jackets alone can cost 500+ for lightweight.
Lol Im looking at this thread wishing I spent that much. And I still gotta pay some stuff off and order some more.

Honesty
Why not just enjoy what you got and not worry about other. We have one guy on here telling people they got ripped off. Says who? You, well you didn't spend it, You don't know what it is. They is a huge difference between your one time instructors course and what a full blown AT skier will put their gear through. Even then who cares what he spends his money on. If it make him happy then cool for him. Some people spend money on cars, watches or whatever. Is it needed, hell no, but good on them for doing what makes them stoked.
