In today's social media consumed world is it possible to become a pro skier (with decent sponsors/backing) without a popular Instagram account? Can someone only post edits online and star in movies? How does this affect the comp scene?
(All) Pro skiers have instagram accounts for many reasons, but they didn't become a pro skier because of their instagram account. The ability of the skier is what makes them professional, not the internet, for movies and comps.

Obviously for current pros but what about skiers on the come up? Is the one with 3k followers much more likely to get picked up then the dude who just drops a couple edits on vimeo/NS a year? Not saying pros shouldnt have IG just wondering if it is possible to do without one nowadays

I'd be quite surprised if an up and comer didnt have instagram, everyone has instagram...
I dont know anyone without an instagram that has functioning knees these days
tcurleScot Schmidt is a pro without IG kinda counts
I don't even know how he's pro I'm so much better than him
Instagram is starting to fucking suck. It's just one big commercial and the algorithms for prioritization blows. It will die soon and no pros will have it. In the meantime, I will post far too many photos. @hipsterpix follow me so I can feel better about my life. #hotdailybabes
Sure. Level 1 has that video competition (Super Unknown) every year that is a great way to get noticed if you're really that good.
jmckay7Eric Pollard ?
Kinda.. he runs the Nimbus Instagram account if I am not mistaken.

Lol. A can walk and on a good day even run, slay some pow mostly no problem but never have I ever signed up on instagram? Nooop. But on the relevance to this thread none backs me up financially.

true forgot about this
you can get sponsors just from the number of followers.it helps if you killing it but you got 1k + people seeing someone's product that's cheap easy advertisement.

Yeah because Jonah, Keegan, or Oliver definitely didn't have an instragram before they won....

Instagram was created in 2010. The superunknown competition started in 2004. Tom Wallisch won in 2007. Your argument is invalid. The point is that no you don't need Instagram to get noticed, but it will definitely help no doubt. These days having social media definitely gives you an advantage, but it isn't a requirement by any means. If you're really serious about making it big, why not pull out all the stops. It takes 2min to make an account.

It goes both ways buddy haha. It helps probably a lot, but not necessary. There's plenty of other avenues

I somewhat disagree. (Some) Pro skiers are pro in part because of their social medial following. For a lot brands sponsorship is just a money making scheme after all.
