Mr. Bishop made a good point in Site Discussion that provided context. This whole new site is geared for the app and mobile browsing. Users on desktop are fewer and far between. I thought the new design looked dated and kinda amateur, but if you view it on your phone it works so much fucking better. So I'll take a less than desirable desktop experience.
I guess it's geared towards mobile users? I feel like I'm using an old persons computer with all the visual aids turned on.
I use NS on my phone and my laptop, the older version looks better on both setups IMO.
I've been on the beta for a week or so. Like all changes to NS, I don't even notice anymore.
Doug can speak to it better than me, but I believe the driving factor was streamlining the back-end for mobile and the app. The app is awesome, so I'm good with the changes to the desktop version.
Thankfully it gave me the option to return to the original view. The new view is TERRIBLE and not user friendly.
there's no button at the bottom of the page to go back to the forum page
The referenced post has been removed.
I second this, the app just seems so much easier for me since I don't have much business on a laptop anyways.
new update is wack as fuck. why are you trying to make this a mobile only site? it looks like fucking garbage on a desktop and I never go on ns with my phone. did you guys make this new layout on freewebs.com or piczo or something??
CaptainObvious. This whole new site is geared for the app and mobile browsing.
This is blatantly obvious. I think it looks awful on a computer but I haven't tried the phone yet. Can't the site detect what platform you're on and pick an appropriate skin? I do browse NS on my phone but I just view it through the browser, I don't see a need to use the app when I can access it on the internet just fine. I don't use the facebook app either, works fine in the browser.
As always, we'll bitch about it for the first few weeks but slowly adapt and forget it ever changed
All I really care about is that the buttons are where my muscle mammary goes so it has that going for it

I'm using NS exclusively on my phone at the moment. I guess different strokes.

Hey... Its hard relearning stuff. Its like when your mom cleans your room; sure it looks nice, but you cant find anything anymore.
Meh. Fine with me. I pop in and out, I understand why they did it.
The Members Online column being empty until below all the posts is driving me crazy. Why have an empty column taking up such a big chunk of the page?
Besides that, this overly simplified approach is incredibly ugly and blocky, but I guess I'll deal with it. I'm never going to be a primarily mobile user for actually browsing newschoolers because photos and videos are better with a full sized screen and it's easier to see and edit what I'm writing. If I'm using mobile all I do is quickly check my threads and leave. If they're truly getting rid of cults, I doubt I'll even bother with that. I've found over the years as they've focused more and more on the mobile aspects of the site and user experience it's just led me to use newschoolers less and less. Now we're at the point where it feels like they're trying to pressure us into switching over. It's disappointing, because the visual appeal used to be the one thing they did really well and was what initially drew me to newschoolers over TGR.
never really thought about it but this is really the only site that I don't go to on my phone and use exclusively on desktop. womp womp. I guess I'll get used to it but the new aesthetics are not appealing. Seems like it went backwards.
quoted posts are appearing far too small on desktop. everything else is huge
I keep waiting for the site to finish loading but then realize it has finished loading.
Naw, don't like everything being gear'd towards tablets or phones
If leaving a desktop mode is possible please do it moving forward.

Yeah this is exactly it right here.
We had to make a call, because the new generation of skiers simply don't use laptops/desktop to access entertainment. The swing towards mobile has increased in speed exponentially all across the internet.
As much as keeping our aging user base who is still using the site on their computers at work happy is important to us - without adapting to the technology of the modern internet... Newschoolers was toast.
Most of you probably dislike the new layout because you aren't used to it. It is using an extremely modern and super fast framework, which will have increased page speed dramatically. We also needed to start with the mobile app first, and expand that into desktop in order to really nail it in the app.
We are absolutely not going to go back to the old layout, it is built on such old technology that keeping it is impossible. It will be retired within a few weeks once a few more of you have had time to adapt.
The little icon at the top right of threads allows you to switch to a condensed mode which might be better for those who think the text is too big.
As well - we have the entire summer to make changes, and as long as we stick with the current framework we are more than happy to work with you guys to tune it the way you'd like to see it.
I know the OG forum people on desktops around here are going to have difficulty adapting - but we put a lot of effort into making it into something which has the smallest learning curve possible for you. We don't want to lose any of you guys, so you really should give it a chance and share any changes you want to see.
What you really need to do though is get with the times, download the app and start to be a part of the future with us.
I downloaded the app. I'm never going back.

.
sorry dude but that excuse is lame as. why not have a mobile and desktop version like every other social media site? it seems like the people you are targeting (kids, who stick to insta/snapchat/twitter and not much else) are the people least likely to make an account and contribute.
I used to frequent a site called ultimate-guitar.com that was pretty much the guitar version of ns. they changed their format to something like this in the fall for the exact same reasons and I've only been back on there a handful of times in like 9 months because it's such an unorganized eye sore.
GORILLAWALLACEsorry dude but that excuse is lame as. why not have a mobile and desktop version like every other social media site?
ummmm......
Not a fan of the update. Not really willing to get an app. Oh well, I'll either adapt or come around less

I also have no interest in getting the app. I prefer to use a computer for all of my browsing. Larger screen, easier to type, less squinting at small letters, and I can navigate to my areas of interest much more quickly..
I agree that a larger segment of the younger generation uses their phones/tablets for a majority of what they do. However, to ignore the core group of computer users is short-sighted and ill advised. If NS drives away its older users, who is going to be providing quality content on the forums and elsewhere? Moving to an exclusively app-based interface is a suicidal move for NS. When I am forced to move to the app-view I will stop visiting NS, as I believe many other will as well.

I just got a notification you quoted me and i clicked it and i can reply to you. Just sayin its really nice
I'm interested to see how this affects the overall content of what is contributed to the site. I'm not saying this is negative or positive, but the reality is this is targeting a different demographic and realistically there will be some attrition of older members (potentially) who aren't willing or just don't care to stick around. There's a lot of younger people here but I do think NS has a surprising amount of aging people with jobs who continue to frequent the site. Hope it stays that way.
eheathI just got a notification you quoted me and i clicked it and i can reply to you. Just sayin its really nice
Cool now we can all reply to each other quicker...
Really dude?
But to be fair, that is the only thing about the app I like haha. I got the app and hated it but then saw that there were notifications. Now I keep the app simply for notifications, but I still use my browser on phone/laptop to log on.

What? You have the app but use your browser on your phone? Why? The app is the mobile site wrapped into an app so is easier to use on a phone, can you explain your reasoning?

same with me. no idea why, if i find out i'll tell you haha
also i don't know shit about website making but i feel like my (possibly others') main issue is just stuff like font, sizing, color etc. can't that be made to look a little more like it did before?
i dislike the new look but i'll live either way :)
hate hate hate hate it. dont fix what's not broken.
eheathWhy don't you want to get the app?
Dumb reason #1 Every new app means I have to delete an old one to make space. No need for that if I can do the same thing on a website
Dumb reason #2 I assume by notifications you mean it will send a push notification to my phone. Cluttering my top bar or making the phone buzz or beep for no reason during the day. This is part of the same reason I don't have a Facebook app. Sure the notifications could be disabled but again it just seems stupid if I can do the same thing by web
GORILLAWALLACEit seems like the people you are targeting (kids, who stick to insta/snapchat/twitter and not much else) are the people least likely to make an account and contribute.
this is so important it needs to be restated.
Mr.Bishopummmm......
this is a terrible example. instagram and snapchat were both originally intended for mobile. you cant compare them to a website that became an app
treebeardthis is so important it needs to be restated.
Wasn't NS built by you people as young kids?
treebeardthis is a terrible example. instagram and snapchat were both originally intended for mobile. you cant compare them to a website that became an app
I'm not comparing, I was making the point that having a site which doesn't have a good desktop experience can work. The point was made before that where if you don't have a good desktop experience, it is "suicide".
That is logically false.
Whether we can pull it off or not is another debate entirely which would be better had with points that make logical sense.
Mr.Bishopummmm......

the bottom line is that ns is being made into something that it was never meant to be. like a lowered 2002 dodge caravan with a body kit and spinning rims. why?
I'm not being an asshole just for fun, im just bummed that the dying community that is the ns forums is being stomped out by stuff like these made for mobile updates.

Don't blame us for things changing, blame the members. Nothing we did changed the way people used the internet, we're just accommodating what the general public uses. The forums are very functional via the app, it could be a game changers if you guys just try...
Wait.. people actually don't like the app? What's wrong with you guys lol.. using browser over the app on your phone, wut? Sounds like y'all just don't wanna change

So wait - you are saying that the community is dying and what we should do is keep doing the same thing and expect different results?
milk_manWait.. people actually don't like the app? What's wrong with you guys lol.. using browser over the app on your phone, wut? Sounds like y'all just don't wanna change
why anyone would use a browser over the app is beyond me. I think it's just people arguing for the sake of arguing.
eheathWhat? You have the app but use your browser on your phone? Why? The app is the mobile site wrapped into an app so is easier to use on a phone, can you explain your reasoning?
I like the look and setup of the browser a lot more. I am using the older setup on my browser though.

Then why cater the desktop site to mobile browser if mobile users should and are using the app?
VinnieFThen why cater the desktop site to mobile browser if mobile users should and are using the app?
Quoting Doug from another thread "essentially we needed to make some big changes [to the desktop site] to support how we built the app. The new desktop layout will have to go live soon, because right now we're supporting two [website infrastructures]."
