What to do when you are sitting on C's, your parents are pissed, and all you want to do is go shred. Every high schooler skiers struggle.
WPMattNo, I have never been a good student, my best GPA was in 7th grade with a 3.5, I havent gotten anything but 2.9 or 3.0 all through high school, but they still think I am a 4.0 guy...
If your parents were tracking your middle school GPA I don't think we can help you.
Thats like stage 5, bro, you're terminal
Young_pattyJesus Christ half this thread is just people jerking themselves off.
Apparently everyone on NS are great scholars, and have outstanding work ethics.

OP,
In all seriousness, get your grades up. I don't know what year you are in high school, but these day's, most colleges aren't looking for C students. I don't mean to shit on you, and I hate to sound like a complete adult/asshole, but ultimately, school comes before skiing. Good grades in high school, translates to a good college degree, which translates to a successful career. Skiing is an expensive sport, and if you want to be able to ski you're whole life, your gonna need a good deal of money.

Seriously, I wanted people to give some advice on getting into the mountains more but everyone just "I got a 4.0 all you have to do is try stop being a dumb fuck or you'll never get a real jobblahblahblah"
TripleXLHoodiesnot to toot my own horn, but I have get a 3.8 gpa, and i still ski a bit, although i had great parental support from the start so that helps a lot
Just wondering, did you ever blaze while having a 3.8?
I take online classes in the off season so all I have to do is go to school from 8:30 to 12 then go skiing and my hill is a 20 minute drive from school.
GryllzJust wondering, did you ever blaze while having a 3.8?
This is a great quote

No, because my mommy showed me this
I know what i am about to say is unfortunate but the people who get the easy 4.0 gpa and all a's are successful because of their dedication to learning early on. Over time you slowly get more and more behind because most things are cumulative. I used to always try all the time on everything and work my butt off in elementary/middle school because I didn't really know what it was like to slack off based on how i was raised. I am breezing through high school, but i am in 4 ap classes so I actually have to try now. I am not saying you are screwed, i am just explaining why everybody seems to think school is easy. However, ive heard that the people who slack off in high school don't do so hot in college when they need to actually study and try.

From my experience that's not really true... A students work for A students that partied and acted like C students haha.
OP: keep busy doing productive things. Always be studying, learning, skiing, working out, getting a job etc. Your parents are worried that you have no work ethic, and that is the cause of your poor grades. They are taking away skiing as a way to motivate you. Show that you do actually have a work ethic, by being productive and busy, and they will likely lay off. If all you want to do is ski, and play video games then yes, you are a piece of shit.

I got a 3.0 in high school and I was in the lower track for math. I really didn't care much.
Tgen I went to college, kinda randomly majored in engineering and got a 3.4 largely because I needed that high of a GPA to keep scholarships.
If you are motivated, and have the terrible fear of failure, you will succeed. People who are okay with failure will find an excuse to fail when the going gets tough.

It can really depend on who you know, and it may not always be the case, but there is some truth to this. Great marks don't guarantee success just like bad marks don't guarantee failure. There are hundreds of thousands of successful people out there that did not have great high school marks.
That being said. Put in an honest effort in school it'll make life a little easier down the road. You can't go very far without a high school diploma. Ski as much as possible if that's what makes you happy, remember a happy person is a successful person.
Play sports in college. That was my only hope to get into a decent school.
Jesus. Are you guys all like 14?
Work harder in school
Honestly just do your homework and get every sssignment in on its due date. If you do that you shouldn't be sitting on C's. I do all my homework and essays but rarely study for exams. I have a b plus average. You got it bro.
School sucked for me. I struggled but graduated. Gym was my best class but I was middle of the road in everything else. I went to college and graduated. I wish I had taken everything after elementary school more seriously and had better methods for studying. I felt like I was trying my hardest at the time but looking back now, that is complete bullshit.
I have a good job with a good company now and I feel very lucky I do. I have worked for the same company for 17 years now and have had several different roles during that time, making more money each time. If I ever got laid off, I feel like I would be completely fucked and that isn't a good feeling.
Moral of the story is, get help from those willing to help you. Do your work. Do it well and to it early. Figure out a system that works for you. Get advice from your teachers on how to improve. Get that sorted out and your parents will ease up and you will get your skiing time. The benefits of all that work will help you for the rest of your life. Don't just say fuck everyone and be mad. Use people to get your own system that makes you better.
THEDIRTYBUBBLEAre you normally a good student? I have always been a C student. School really isn't my thing. My parents used to get pissed all the time that I didn't have a 3.0 or above. Eventually they realized that I am by no means a scholarly person. They simply ask that I pass all my classes and allocate my time in a productive manner.
Were you able to go to college? My parents are chill except when I get below a 3.0 which I usually am
high school was the one time of my life where i could ski every day. ive skied 3 days this year, 0 last year
My teachers just knew the deal, any new snow and I won't be in school. Parents were always okay with it. My brothers made that possible, we all three had pretty much the same teachers. I would just get all the next day's work before I left for the day.
My parents won't let me go skiing with anything below a high B in any of my classes. I gotta have all As. I've always had a 4.0+ and my parents don't realize that I'm not exactly 4.0 anymore. First year of highschool is hitting me hard.

It just keeps getting harder my dude. Until senior year your course load is probably gonna suck if you're in AP classes, I was in the same boat. Just keep good study habits and you'll be fine.

Yeah I plan to take all AP classes. If I get enough credits I'll be able to get early release as a senior.
Just taught my first semester of high school social studies and this is what I would advise you to do:
1: Turn your work in on time. 95% of the time my students do poorly it isn't because they don't do their hw or finish assignments. Even if you're getting Cs on tests, you should be able to counter that with a high class work/homework avg.
2. Ask your teacher for help. I know this sounds dreadful, but there is nothing better than a student coming to me and saying "my grade is lower than I want it to be, what can I do to improved it" or something similar. Most teachers love when students are willing to do that(unless got stuck with an asshole teach) and chances are they'll know exactly what you can do to improve your grade.
3. Make some sort of compromise with your parents. If your grades are low and they aren't letting you ski, maybe offer to stay after school with a teacher or get a tutor through your HS (when I was in high school students could get student tutors for free). Maybe you can reason your parents into letting you ski as long as you show you're putting the effort into it.

Super underrated. The only reason I got through engineering is because 1st semester freshman year I sucked it up and went to every damn office hour available with my TAs. I continued that for almost all of my lower level classes.
People like successfully teaching someone. And I know the TAs got stoked when the dumbass they've been helping all these months is crushing test scores haha.
Also, it is literally private tutoring... For free.
My classes are fairly easy with little homework so far (I'm a sophomore) but it's hs so nowhere near as hard as college. I get to ski Friday night's through Sunday and on breaks, so I'm pretty happy, and my grades stay within A's to a high C, so life is pretty good rn and along with work I worked the past two summers to make some cash on the side

Never really understood why people love to brag about how good their grades are/were in high school. It's not a fucking accomplishment. You just have good study habits.
THEDIRTYBUBBLENever really understood why people love to brag about how good their grades are/were in high school.
Because it helps them feel better about themselves, or they want to sound smart on the internet.
For me high school wasn't a struggle, I won't say I'm brilliant but school was easy for me, I was bored most of the time and graduated early. I got out of class early to ski, went skiing before/after I had class (we had free periods at school, some days in the morning, some in the afternoon). I took advantage of the free periods every once in a while for stuff I knew I didn't have the motivation to get done on my own time. If it was something I could do quickly and easily, I'd do it in the evening when I got home from the mountain. I'd study for tests with the notes I took and added notes that I'd write in a way that I understood later, sounds nerdy but that's what worked for me to ski and keep good grades.
I can only give advice on what I know which is mostly time management and just buckling down when it's really needed. Clearly you can't just stop studying, and if you stop skiing, you'll be miserable. What I'd do is take advantage of programs your school offers, tutoring, free periods, study hall, anything to get the grades up to a good base line. Then I'd work on figuring out what you can change to keep them up. The more you work your ass off to get the grades up now, the easier it'll be to keep them up when midterms and finals come around. So try your best to prevent any avoidable slip ups, that way if something comes up like a late paper, you'll have a higher grade to begin with and it won't take as hard of a hit. As far as tests, those weigh higher so that would be one thing I would recommend keeping at a high level. Even if that means going out to shred for a one or two hours, it's better to study for the test than be in hot water and have your parents pissed and your grades in the shitter. 100% worth it to study in a way that works for you, notes, reading, study groups with friends, just make it work, get 'er done.
You can't be perfect, but if you want to ski, it sounds like you have to make an effort for school. It is what it is, might as well work for higher grades so you have more options in your future.
THEDIRTYBUBBLENever really understood why people love to brag about how good their grades are/were in high school. It's not a fucking accomplishment. You just have good study habits.
Your right about that, all It is is good studying and how fast people learn material. I'm one of those people who can't learn stuff in class but I study and I'm lucky enough to learn it quickly.

Smarter people do learn stuff faster, it's just a mixture of that and how hard they work. I know some really smart kids who have the knowledge but they're just lazy and don't make terrific grades. I happen to be on the smarter end, but I won't brag about it and I hate when others do, excessively.
voyryI happen to be on the smarter end, but I won't brag about it .
I thought would wouldn't brag about it....
Doesn't bother me, but it's gotta bother atleast a few of these marshmallow soft, self conscious, haters in this thread haha.

If you're motivated, then you can achieve above a 3.0 if you put in literally 1 hour of work. Not that fucking hard. Not really something to be that proud of.

How sad must your life be, and how low must your self esteem be to denigrate others' objectively positive accomplishments.
Do high school grades and academics strike a nerve with you?
DeebieSkeebiesbuckle the fuck down and build up some work ethic so when you get older, you can work your damn ass off to make sure you can ski a bunch.
Can i put this in my sig?
Honestly this should've been /thread after this quote

100% circumstantial.

Yup. I bs'ed in high school got a very mediocre GPA. Then earned a much better GPA in a very difficult major at college because my fear of failure forced me to go overboard on the studying.
It depends on the person, but it's amazing what a person terrified of failure can accomplish, when faced with possible failure.

If I understood the ramifications of fucking up my gpa, I most likely would have tried to fix it or at least put a sub par effort into choosing classes in a wiser fashion haha
Just stop pissing around and get your grades up so you can go shred... dreaming about shredding won't let you shred, actually being active on a problem will though. Very true though, hard to study when school topics are crap and uninteresting, that's why the motivation is knowing if you get an A on a test you get to shred.
