What if skis, like boots and bindings had a measure for how stiff they are? I'm aware that skis don't have linear flex going down the ski, but what if there was an overall measure of stiffness that could help people get an understanding of what stiffness they generally prefer. Thoughts?
The boot scale has become almost entirely meaningless between brands and even between different boot models from the same manufacturer, so I don't think they would have a lot of success with skis.
Besides as you say, skis have radically different flexes throughout the length, so a single number to represent the flex of the ski would tell you precisely three fifths of fuck-all useful information.
It would be a good marketting tool for guys who like to wear $2000 Descente suits and tell strangers on chairs about the flex rating of their skis, though.

Yeah, and a cambered ski and a rockered ski of identical flexes will feel completely different.
comparing ski flexes would be tricky. Some companies like Armada offer up their personal interpretation of their ski flexes, from tail to waist to tip, which is actually pretty useful. I doubt we'll get a standardized rating but it would be extremely helpful if other companies could at least offer up a flex comparison for their own line.
