Moving out to take a gap year with my buddy and planning on moving near Seattle or Vancouver, WA. After the gap year I plan on attending the evergreen state college and was wondering if any ns members go there?
Byron_tha_gr8My Ex goes there, thats why she's my ex
All my Ex's live in Texas.
I live in the area. Its an... interesting college.
The seattle area is cool though, I'm moving up there from olympia at the end of the month. Way closer to skiing/climbing/etc
I dont know anything about evergreen state, but don't spend a gap year in Van. That place blows
Just curiously, out of all the colleges in the Western US, why did you pick evergreen?

Who wouldn't wanna take drum circles 101?
GANDALFWho wouldn't wanna take drum circles 101?
But there are like 10 other hippy dippy schools that are closer to skiing.
Its like OP wants to go pay full out-of-state university prices for a community college education and experience that is in the meth capital of the PNW and far away from skiing? Then again, the utter lack of logic in OP's decision making would make OP fit right in with the Evergreen student body!

Planning on getting residency first, no way I'd pay out of state for evergreen. Also there is an absurd amount of scholarships to apply for. I'm also aware there are schools closer to skiing, but I've already had seven concussions from skiing so I figured a couple years with less skiing wouldn't be bad for me. Out of curiosity, what makes you dislike this "hippy dippy" school so much anyways? I think the different approach to education evergreen offers seemed kind of cool.. I may be wrong though, but I still would like to try it out first.

Doesn't want to shave her bush and still get laid?
Or as a post-modern millennial she feels that scholastic achievements should not be restricted to the categorizing and hurtful grading system that doesn't allow full expression because it is more about how you feel about your essay/project than whether it was any good.
Fuck, maybe she is just #feelinthebern

Largely it's a bad school, with a bad reputation, with a bad student life, in a bad city. Seriously though.
What are you looking for in a college? Why do you want to go to college?

This. It's not so much their super hippy/liberal approach to education, and their unique ass class structures, its the fact that its in a not so great part of a not so great town, in a state with lots of better options.
I think it would have attracted better staff and students if it was in a better place, but the combination of their never-before-used education system being located in a bit of a shit hole has really hurt them.
Evergreen is a possibly good idea executed horribly. You'd ski just as much and get a better respected degree from Central Washington. And probably party with less weird kids tripping on fungus they harvested from their pubes.
When it comes to schools that offer 4 year degrees, Evergreen is perhaps the least impressive degree.
It honestly doesn't tell employers anything about your work ethic or capabilities aside from more likely to be some special snowflake.

I appreciate the concern you guys are showing for my education. Maybe you will be right and I will transfer if that is the case. However I felt that the school will help me become more understanding and ultimately help me grow as an individual. The atmosphere felt as if I could nurture my creative side, which in turn will help me apply different styles of thought to certain situations.
AND yes! There are different schools to choose from. Yet for some reason I feel I would benefit the most as a person from evergreen. Then again maybe I'm wrong. Maybe it's just the fungus I'm growing in my pubes giving me the wrong impression. Hah.
In actuality, I'm trying to find a place to rebuild myself. Maybe I chose a "rundown" place because, after suffering from depression for some years, that's how I feel about myself. I'm just trying to find some beauty within me again and what better place to do it. When I visited the town, it was depressing, I liked it because maybe somehow I'll be able to bring some light to it as well as myself. This may be hippy talk to you, but I don't see myself as one nor do my peers. I'm just trying to grow intellectually, emotionally, and I guess spiritually. Trying to be a well rounded adult ig.
My Dad went to Evergreen for undergrad back when it started, and I grew up in Olympia, so Ima shit on all your opinions real quick.
Olympia sucks if you're a skier. No community, the one local shop got fucked by REI, so you can't even get a mount in town now. It's also min 2hr drive to skiing, and that's rainy Snoqualmie. At least they're getting a bike park...
Evergreen sucks because it attracts the stupid and those looking to get an easy degree. My Dad is smart as fuck, has a PhD (from Dartmouth), but his kind of student would never go there now. It's not even a bad school really, but it's academically weak compared to other schools you could get into with the same metrics. The other thing is that many of those people follow the goth/punk/hipster/artist style of things to a very deep level. Like chicks with bowl cuts and tight black everything deep. Evergreen is known for that, and people do come for that culture. I'm not judging it necessarily, but it sure as fuck isn't me. And I doubt it's you.

Lol, you're trying to be a well rounded adult? No you're not, but that's fine. To each their own.
You've heard from a few folks here what they think about evergreen. You know what you want out of college. Maybe you're priorities change down the line and your perspective changes. Maybe not.
Damn. Apparently everyone in this thread has a 4 year degree but never learned to give any respect. Ya'll need lay off the poor girl and go back to watching the republican national debates. After all she just asked if any of you go to evergreen not what your opinion on it is.
People running smack into the surliness of WA regionals ha. Evergreen has just come to be a less serious academic institution due to some of the people who go there. The hipsters who go to Evergreen are more along the lines of New York, mostly dresses in black, smokes cigs, and goes to art school hipsters. For whatever reason, it's a gathering place for their flavor. It's a pitched battle between them and the real hippies who started it all. Olympia is a haven for old hippies, and many of them work at Evergreen in sustainability and/or horticulture and they're dope. Not hipsters. Walk the talk, revolutionary lifestyle hippies. That's the one dope thing about Oly.
But I stand behind what I said about skiing. Terrible place for it.

I didn't know that evergreen was ever a serious academic institution. I personally would never go there and I wouldn't hire somebody who went there either, but people (that I know of) don't go there to get a business degree, people go there to study the arts and other intangibles.
can't say that your wrong about the skiing bit but I when to school at wazzu for 5 years and can't imagine the skiing being much worse in oly. Didn't ski a lot then. but during college I just enjoyed college and went when I occasionally could.
On another note, if you're looking for a place in Seattle soonish, one of my friends and I are looking for another roommate or two to go in on a house for a year.

more like trying to let her know what Evergreen is actually like. I almost went there based on one short tour, talked to some friends who went there or knew about it, decided not to go.Out of the people I know who went to Evergreen (all 3 of them), none graduated from Evergreen.
NS'ers are, in general, "too smart" for evergreen. Maybe she should try the grass city forums.
Welcome to the internet, where I get to shit all over whatever I want, and so does everyone else.

Evergreen haven't earned any respect.
