Ok so I'm new to park and have been grinding rails for a few months now. I thought I could hit the bigger rails in the park. When I'm about to hit the rail. I just start freaking out and just jump of the lip. This happened consecutively 3 times before I'm like " I can't get myself to do this" is there any way to get over this fear? Thanks ns
If it feels like a bad idea riding in then you might want to wait to try it.
Just think that "worst thing that can happen is that I die, but its way cooler to die at skiing than to die on a car acident and I could die on a car acident tommorow so lets hit this rail"

Makes sense
so that happens to me more than i would like to admit, most recently on the rainbow at the bottom of the keystone park (sorry don't even know where u ride) anyway when i was learning bigger rails i would try and at least jump over the rail, then i tell my self
Self, that was not scary at all now take your balls out of your purse, put your skis down and lock on to the rail.
that typically works, if not i go for beer
give your friend 5 20 dollar bills, tell him to burn one every time you ride off the lip.

Pretty extreme but it seems like it would work

used to do something like this.
me and a buddy wanted to progress but we would get scared, so we would stand above a rail or jump and say we are doing (x) trick. if one of us didn't try it the other one got a free slap to the face. it was more painful getting slapped then trying tricks so we ended up learning a good bit.
Try jumping over the rail ( coming on left side of jump and landing on right side of rail ) that will help you get ised to the lip, then Eventually youll build up enough courage to hit the rail. Just remember to turn full 90 degrees and fully commit
Beer.
But really, if you have that feeling as you ride up don't go for it. I've learned that lesson countless times skateboarding and skiing. There's a difference between trying something new that you probably can do and trying something new that you have no chance at, the difference being you getting wrecked or not. Eventually you'll feel confident trying it, and that's when it's time to try. If you think you're gonna fall you almost certainly will.

ill try it
For immediate results, get your friend to send your crush/grandmother a dick pic every time you pussy out.

lol profit
I think I'm a pussy too! haha whenever I go to hit a normal down rail I will just do a front or back 2 off, but I wont ever try to swap it, or a kfed. I know how to do these tricks because I spent all summer mastering the 8 switch up 2 out variations (couldn't get back swap to back swap..)
I just need to do it haha
Film it. Then if you crash and eat it you'll be able to post it on the internet and get famous.
This might be weird to hear as a beginner, but just try it with full commitment
Usually I feel 10x more comfortable after taking the first slam on a trick, if Im not hurt that bad it makes everything seem doable, because I know I can fall and get back up

this is basically what I do.
I'm the same way though, OP. I usually stick to smaller features. I'll do all the tricks I can do on them but as soon as theres like a large gap or I have to hit something going mach 10 I just don't. I'm content with doing harder stuff on smaller rails/boxes than trying to do something simple on a hard feature.
I don't even give a fuck either. If you really want to hit bigger features, just do it. If you don't, then don't. No one is making you. Just do what you want.
Just have fun don't worry about doing crazy rails
So serious when I say take a shot before going skiing

I'm with Mingg on this one. Your confidence will build up as you go and your ego will either say do it or be content. Just ski man, fuck the need to be a pro
This should get a sticky, theres quite a few people that need this advice.
OP the longer you wait and think about it the wwwaayyyyyyy worse it gets. I have the same problem and I'm under 21, so no beer. Just have one of your buddies or a couple of them peer pressure you in to doing it. That always helps for me, and once you do it the first time you are golden. And once you are on it just think about it as just being on any other rail.
get someone to film it. If you land it, sick, then everyone can see it/ you can watch it. If you don't land it, sick, then you have a crash. For whatever reason I always try new things when the camera is rolling

Its normal to be scared. Some people have less fear than others, and everyone has a different way to cope with it.
Personally, I always have been kind of a huge bitch when it comes to being afraid. It was probably the single biggest thing that held me back from every actually being a professional skier.
That being said, by my peak I was very much able to hit fairly large features. I used to be terrified of jumping, but I've zeroed an 85' kicky jump.
When you have a lot of fear - you both need to straight up face it, and to really work up to something. There is nothing wrong with continuing to hit the smaller rails until you're crazy confident. Try some tricks on them so sliding a rail naturally seems like no thing whatsoever. Just hit them over and over and over again. See if you can find some medium-sized things that are partway between the big stuff and the little stuff... hit those hundreds of times.
Once you have practiced enough and you're super confident that you can do it - then it is only fear stopping you. You might crash sure, but usually the crash is nowhere near as bad as you think its going to be. Usually if you try something big, you end up sliding the first two feet, coming off the side and riding away. Without commitment, you'll never get to the end - but at least if you try to hop onto it you'll get the sense that its not total death to give it a shot.
Conquering fear is another story. Everyone does it differently. I always had a few phrases I would say to myself when I was really scared.... or if I was bumping tunes I had a couple of them that would really inspire me to go for some shit.
Its OK to build up to something - but at a certain point your logic brain knows you have it and then its just your own fears stopping you. Face them and crush them.

I remember this is how you taught me how to hit urban style rails at Killington last year!! And it ended up being way easier than I thought. Wow good times haha.
If your scared of the rail then that means you are not comfortable doing something that big yet what I do at the start of every year (if your reasort has a beginner to hard park system thing )
Is do every thing in the easy park and do one trick off all the the features then the next and do everythjng until your down with it then the next and the next and get really used to being on small stuff and working up and make sure to have the basics down

No shame in a lil' tap just to feel it out.
I mean sure if you're hitting urban with a film crew and you have 15 seconds to get one shot before security gets there - you need to get that shit first try.
In your home park trying something new... fuck it.
Don't worry, it's totally curable. Just look at this guy, he was a pussy and now he's sponsored by Jskis and Saga as well as making money posting videos on Newschoolers...things can work out, you just have believe (and be sick of being a pussy).

Just got to go one step at a time. Got it
Melbourne.I have the same problem and I'm under 21, so no beer.
lol for real? Do all of you americans obey the rules so strictly? Beer is actually really great for overcoming fear, but you can't drink too much obviously and sometimes it's just better to cope with the fear sober. What helps me before hitting a big kicker or trying a new trick (rails don't tend to be that scary) just to calm down, spend a moment visualizing it and then just go for it.
Shredit0Just got to go one step at a time. Got it
Boom.
Its all just in your head. If you don't think about it too much and just send it, you'll be gucci. But if you think about it a lot, get worked up and nervous about it and try it, that is when you really fuck up.
I just tried my first misty 5 today. For me, I just pretended I had done 1 thousand of them and chucked it. I fell, but it did not hurt at all. I'm not scared at all anymore. Just pretend you are a pro.
You just have to do it, and that's the only way it's going to get better. You have to have a strong mind to get good at any sport that involves inherent danger. My recommendation get some good pump up music and go for it, what is the worst that could happen? You fall off the rail early, you slip off and your skis pop off, like just think that pros are literally flipping out of big rails and they are able to do it almost every time. If they can get the balls to hit a huge ass jump do triples and doubles and flip in and out of rails, I'm pretty sure you can find something in you to get yourself to try and straight slide a rail. Not only that but everyone falls trying to learn new stuff and it's something you have to get used too and accept. So sack up and do it and I assure you you will find it easy right after your try it.
Sorry if that sounds kinda harsh, but that's the mindset I usually have going into something new that I'm scared of. I also find skiing with someone that is better than you helps or even on the same level of you, just adds some friendly competition. Whenever I get scared my friends just call me a bitch or a pussy and won't shut up about it until I try it. I hate it when people say that but I admit that it really does get me to try it. Everyone goes through being scared even the best of the best, torin said in a video that at times he's terrified of what he's going to try, but you really do just have to go for it if you want to progress to larger stuff.
