just wondering if anyone has had an oh shit moment mid air or on the rail
First time I hit a big jump with speed I overshot it almost to flat. It was only a 30 foot jump (big for Ohio), but I was terrified.
I had what turned out to be a broken arm (I'd been told at the time it was a muscle strain by the hospital). It was my leading arm (I snowboard). I had eased up on tricks as my arm hurt a bit and so i went off a fairly whippy step down jump which I'd done plenty of times before my injury. It was kind of windy and because my arm was too fucked to keep me straight, I got blown across 90° in the air (so my chest was facing down the slope). At that point i knew i was gonna come down with a sudden stop so just tried to minimize how much damage i would do to myself. Fortunately I had enough speed to clear the knuckle but I landed straight on my toe edge and scorpioned with my newly broken arm underneath me. I don't know for sure but I'm pretty sure that may have re-broken the 2 weeks of healing which had been happening prior to that.
Pretty sure everyone on this site has had an "oh shit" moment.
But my most memorable one was when I was maybe 9 and I was snowboarding (yeah yeah yeah make fun all you want) for this first time out west, and their jumps were much much bigger than anything I had ever hit in Minnesota. I was a fearless kid, and I hit the big kicker that was next to the halfpipe at Steamboat (I haven't been back since, not sure if they use a similar setup still, highly doubt it). Anyways, it was probably a 30 footer, which for a 9 year old is massive. I hit the jump and do half a backy and had no where near enough speed. I remember in the air I thought I was going to die and I nearly landed directly on the top of my head. I was KO'd for a good couple of minutes, and when I got up, everyone on the lift was cheering. So yeah...
Doing a 180 off a jump on race skis. Why? I have no clue what I was thinking but about at about 90 it was definitely be an oh shit.
Julius_Steezer(I snowboard).Do you still snowboard? And if so are there any snowboarding equivalent websites to skiings newschoolers?
hitting a hip as a table, clearing the landing by about 20 feet, and having plenty of time in the air to think about how i was going to hit a tree after i landed.
I hit a big 20 footer and caught an edge. I didn't even realize my ski was off until I went down to grab it. I had just enough time to think about how to land and decided to go down on my left side. I felt the pain shoot through my butt cheek and then my entire leg until it stopped at my nutsack(think lightning through my leg).
I ended up pulling my hip flexor and could hardly walk for 2
weeks. My "OH SHIT!" moment was when I reached down and nothing was there. I must've looked like Wil E Coyote

Yeah I do both. I don't think there's one with such a large online community. Maybe Yobeat

That's what happens when you get old, you have more stories and pain haha! That was 2 years ago at boyne highlands. Consequently it's the same mountain I broke my knee at last year. I am avoiding that mountain for the rest of my life. On a good note, I am cleared to groomer sesh with a brace until the end of January.
Hit a 35-40 jump for the first time and saw some lady skiing down the landing mid air and almost killing her luckily I missed her by about 5 feet but it was a close call.
At PC last spring I was at the end of a super long train (luckily) and my ski stuck in some slush going up the jump and it totally pulled one of my legs back and I slammed the jump with my face and cartwheeled off the side of the jump 10 or so feet to my head. Definitely an "Oh shit" moment... good times

Eating shit as the first person in a jump train...

That's not that big of a deal, you can ski/land switch on "normal" skis perfectly fine. Actually I learned to ski switch and even did some 5s on my slalom skis..
Stuck as soon as I landed on a very sticky flat-down box. Missed the whole down part and landed on my shoulder, resulting in a separated AC joint. The moment I landed on the box, I knew it wasn't going to be good.
I overshot a 10-15 footer by 20 feet and almost went to flat

Saw gaper in the landing of 35-foot jump... Landed on said gaper and just destroyed him. Called him a dumbass and asked if he needed patrol.
All I was thinking while in the air was "I'm going to fucking kill this guy when I land and get convicted of murder".
when you lean into a steep dfd and get bucked to your chest on the down

With plenty of shin pressure I assume? I took off backseat.
realizing that i left every sink, tv, fire place, and light running and leaving the doors unlocked before flying to Utah
I went off a jump and saw someone just standing on the landing. They didn't just hit it or anything they were just skiing around the park, oblivious of the fact that they were doing everything there is to do wrong in a busy terrain park..
back in the day i was learning some really shitty shifty 3s and sessioning this littl 15 footer with some people teaching me.
I drop.
I see gaper race child going as fast as me while I drop next to me .
I pop off lip.
I spin.
I see gaper race child sparkling red helmet out of the corner of my eye when im at 180.
"OH SHIT"
I spread eagle
gaper race child is oblivious and almost dies. I land my first 3 spread eagle. I get yelled at by race coach. my coach yells back.
Firts that comes to mind is at 2:59, I come in first time ever hitting the booter and I was really hyped that day so I went for a 3 and way over shot it
I started early for a jump so i could gather more speed. Then I over shot the jump and landed on the flat, sending me flying across the snow. My skis popped off and my helmet and goggles fell off. Wasn't hurt, pretty lucky that day
Last season at Carinthia one ski ejected mid air on the last jump on Inferno which was roughly a 65 foot gap and I was 20 feet off the ground and I remember just saying in my head "oh fuck there goes my acl" before I landed but then just tumbled and got a hair line fracture on my thumb..
Completed the rotation for a flat 3 while I was 15 feet above the knuckle. Thought to myself "I'll just take it to 540". So I took it to 540. Then I realized that I'm still sailing away from the landing. So I thought "Wow I'm going to overshoot". Then I though "oh shit I've had time to say that in my head". And I slowly sailed to my hip/head.
Screaming semen train. I was 3rd in line out of 10 people. Low and behold the second guy falls on the landing, dooming the rest of us. Lots of screaming. Lots of semen.

Boy I don't know who it was, But someone was looking out for you.

I was completely fine I was so stunned. It was my fault kinda, went off the lip poorly and mangaged to hit the ski off myself, not sure if my other ski hit the heel, dildo piece down or the other ski just hit it hard from the side. Fun ass jump though.
ducked a line early last season with a 3 inch base. It was more or less a really flat pillow line. We had to hop from thinly covered rock to thinly covered rock, I got going too fast, tried to hop a stream... i undershot, hit the stream bed full speed and pinched a few nerves
dumped a 70 footer in the park over backwards like falling back in a chair..... so many window roles thank goodness for transition
During my first cliff huck which was about 15 ft bigger than I thought (25ft). Right when I left the edge I knew i was gonna eat it but thank god there was pow.
I hit a rail with a ton of speed to find a young jerry waiting for me at the end. I almost ended his exsistance
few years ago my hill had a wall ride at the end of the park, there was like a jump on the side of it and I hit it trying to do like a bonk on the side of the wall ride and waaayyy overshot it.
I just remember realizing as soon as i popped that it was gonna work out haha. Went probably 8 or 10 ft in the air to flat and kneed myself in the face pretty good. Didnt fuck my mouth up or break my nose or anything but did have a solid bruise on my cheek/below my eye for a while.
good times.
Two years ago I was in the middle of a 2-day comp. and decided to take a lap through the jump park. The park crew had changed the lip on the first jump, maybe a 30 footer, so that much less speed was needed. But of course I take the normal amount of speed into it and do a total flail in the air. Looking down at the landing coming up, and then going by as I overshoot it by a long ways, that was probably my Oh Shit moment.
Ended up having my knees buckle, taking a knee to the face which put my braces through my lip, and breaking my hand as it hit my pole on the ground.
Over shooting/over rotating a superman front flip. ...to belly flop.
basically my first time at Alta was just one big "oh shit" moment riding with people who were way better than me and me being from the east coast I was very out of my element but still probably one of my favorite days of riding my whole life.
First time hitting jumps last season I decided to straight line the first jump in keystone's mid section. I took it about 30+ feet deep and I remember thinking in the air,
"Welp, i'm about to be in a wheelchair for a few months".
Ended up being fine, just hurt my knees a lot.
Hitting a tube and feeling my tails catch, knowing your shoulder or hip is about to get messed up
Over shot a 15 footer by more than 20 feet into the flats, got knocked out and had a concussion /claim
Air: Blue Mountain, end of season park. I overshot the 50 footer and landed in the speed bumps...I saw everything fly by.Did try flapping my wings, but no.
Rail: Owen Sound Ontario, there was a sick down flat down urban rail. It was perfect. On the 4th attempt, I fought hard to not crotch the rail, but at the last kink it nutted the rail, flipped to the metal steps and landed on the concrete on my back. I could feel it from the second I got on wrong.
Big mountain: So many scary moments, but crashing at the end of a pillow line near a tree was pretty scary. There was an avalanche too...I would call that an OH SHIT moment
Any time you hit a jump and just see the knuckle and know you're taking it to the gucci plateau
whenever you split your skis, its an oh shit moment
A couple years ago I was about to throw a seven off a jump but at the top of the lip both of my skis caught (on nothing) and I ended up doing a 9 and at about 3 I realized I didn't have skis on and I landed straight on my face
It's never good when you land in the chalet off a jump.
was boosting out of the remains of the pipe at brighton last season and way overestimated the speed. Cleared the deck, the back, and the rope afterward and took it to flat.

Definitely did the same thing on my old skis. I guess it's a good primer to doing tricks :P
My biggest "oh shit" moment was when I was 13 and I was attempting a backflip with a pair of broken race skis. Ill let the picture speek for itself...
After a couple of more tries I managed to land it.
