I am going to attempt my first urban rail. i was just wondering if there is anything that i have to do to the rail before i hit it. i know you can file down rough spots but is there anything else you have to? like pouring water onto it? any other tips on how to ride it would be great
run you skis over it a few times to clear off any debris like paint chips. Pour water on the lip of the jump to make sure it dosn't collapse
lube it with what? water or snow or something else

wizard wax of course. because after all, youre a wizard harry
honestly most rails are fine as they are. run your ski edge over the rail a few times and make sure there isn't any jagged edges, if nothing catches then you're golden. also watch out for aluminium rails, they are too soft of a metal to slide and you'll catch an edge and fall.
if you wax rails you're a kook that deserves to catch an edge

Goat semen obviously what else would you use?

How do i tell if it's aluminum or steel?

Tap/scratch it with your nail. It makes a softer sound then steel and will gouge easily
