So for the most part I've completed rehab from knee surgery I had at the beginning of the summer (longest 6 months of my life). This past Monday I was cleared by my doctor to lightly return to all normal activities, including skiing. Although I worked like an animal throughout the course of my physical therapy to get where I am now, I realize that I'm not back to 100% yet. The new graft still needs to mature and I'm still working toward getting my balance and stability back. I plan on giving myself a few more weeks to get stronger and in better ski shape, I've been meeting with a trainer at my gym to help me get there. I have my knee brace on deck and ready to go for my first day back, which will probably consist of some light cruising. Anyone else who's been through the same have any advice for someone who is just getting back in the game? I'll take all the help I can get!!!
I have..... It feels sketchy at first just avoid impact cruze hit boxes whatever floats your boat and you are comfortable with. Since you said graft I assume you had a cadaver tendon. Vail summit ortho did mine. I snowboarded for the first 3 weeks back as a liftie because it was easier on the knee but went to skiing soon enough. I only wore my brace for the first season back "feb thru may" and I did a bunch of ski patrol shiz at vail for cmc "running rigs and stuff". The next season I only wore the brace for the first day back and then if felt better without it. Anyway that was in 12 and I don't even think about it now, and havent for the last 3 seasons. Just ease back into it and don't do anything dumb like case any big jumps or fall off any tall features. Good Luck,
Mike
I had my ACL surgery two days ago. Dude i'm dying haha it hurts so fucking bad. Even with the pain killers I'm really really sore.
I did rehab everyday for the first 5 months and was able to get back for the last weekend of the season, only cruzing. Bad knee didnt hurt as much as expected (hurt alot though) good leg killed cause i was favoring it so hard. Was back hitting jumps 2 or so months later at hood and shit hurt a bunch then cause it was the first time gettin sendy after it. Now im pretty much at 100 percent cause ive been squatting a bunch whenever i can. knee still makes noises, gets stiff, etc though. Its never out of my mind though, with every weird landing its still the first thought in my mind.

went through that shit a month ago, its brutal eh, way worse than i expected. make sure you ice it and raise it tho and don't let it get too stiff the first few days. it will kill, but try and get your range of motion back as soon as possible you'll thank me later. in a couple weeks you'll be walking and sleeping pretty much normally

Have you attempted to ski yet? I had my acl and meniscus done March 25 and am going for the first time either tomorrow or next weekend. I'm still super sketched out about it! I worked my ass off to get ready but am still not confident. For the last month I've been roller skating/blading even to test it out.
Wondering how it went if you did?
I tore my ACL and meniscus back in February of 2014. I got back on skis of November that year after pt all summer and did not feel comfortable in the park for quite a while. I stuck to skiing all mountain almost the whole season. I’m not sure if it was fear of rear tearing it again but I did not feel it was 100%. This year I feel better than ever and am back to hitting jumps and skiing hard. Take your time getting back on the snow and slowly work your way back. Hit the pt and gym hard to get your strength back and understand the healing and recovery process takes time.
i had severe ocd in both knees that put me out for 9 months and im still a little iffy. my only advice is stretch a shitload before AND after any skiing or trampolining and dont rush things.

Start slow and be careful. I had my surgery in March of 04, and I really did not ski much in 04/05. My situation was different, I was going from living in the mountains as a ski bum to a graduate student, so my first year out I just concentrated on school and only skied 8 or 10 days. I'm glad it worked out that way, as it gave me plenty of time to heal and train. My second season I skied about 30 days, which is a typical season for me now, and I did not have any problems.
I know you won't want to hear this but you really have to start slow. I killed myself in rehab too, but I still had to accept that I was not full strength my first year back. I was lucky to be in a situation where I could take a year without much skiing and not be too upset. If I had stayed in the mountains and kept being a ski bum it would have been much harder that first year after surgery.
Listen to your doctors and therapists. Don't try to accelerate their schedule. If you follow protocol and don't get unlucky you can make a full recovery and come back as strong as you were before. I am more than 10 years out on my surgery and I have not had any problems. I still wear my brace, as it could prevent a hyper-extension and it makes sense to keep wearing it. I can't ski the way I could before the surgery but that is because I went from skiing 120 days a year for four seasons in a row to 30-40 days a year. Had I stayed in the mountains I would have been able to ski just as well after surgery as before.
You have come a very long way. Just be careful. You don't want to push too hard now and lose everything you have gained by doing something stupid. Just keep doing what the docs and physios tell you and you will return to full strength in time. Good luck.
tore mine in january of 2014, had surgery in may 2014, took off the 2014/2015 ski season to really let it heal. got cleared to ski in like january of 2015, skied once and just took it easy on groomers. the whole time i worked on leg strength, and now i'm back skiing again with a brace. feels decent. still weird, get weird pains, and every time i take a weird turn or land weird i fear the worse, but each day back on snow makes it feel better. it takes time, dont rush anything. take your time and ease back into it.
