Clearly there is Big Sky and Bridger but are there any smaller resorts or is it just hiking,
Those are the closest. It's just hiking around here after BB and BS. Great Divide and Discovery are at least 1 2/3 to 2 hours away- and don't offer the kind of skiing Big sky does.
Moonlight Basin... Oh wait Big Sky screwed that up. #ThanksBoyne

in that they don't charge $100 for lift tickets and you don't have to wait a half hour to get to the good terrain.
Maverick, Showdown, and Red Lodge are all within drivable distance for a day trip as well. All the local areas are worth it if they get snow, half off lift tickets with a Bridger or BS pass.

Fo reals half off? I think I might make a day trip to a few this year then.

Fuck off.
YoungDaphFuck off.
Thanks for those kind words :) ... I'm assuming you didn't ski moonlight before big sky bought it, otherwise you would know of the countless people Boyne screwed over. Many of my friends worked for moonlight and ended up quitting because big sky treated them like crap. I skied at Moonlight my whole life until Boyne took over. Moonlight is my home mountain not "loveland" (like you) so how bout you go back to Colorado before you comment on stuff you know nothing about. I love big sky! I just hate the way it is run (by boyne). Local atmosphere is gone, as well as the core values of moonlight.

I did ski moonlight before the merger. I was also almost 3 years into working for big sky when the merger happened. Yes, people got fucked over, but it was remarkably fewer people than there would have been had some of the other buy out options occurred. I'd be willing to bet a lot of money that I know more about the merger than you, the "moonlight local" does so how about you spend less time criticizing me for not being a born and raised montanan and stalking my profile to prove a point and maybe pay a little more attention to what really happens up here. I've been a full time employee up here for 5 years and I've heard every argument from both sides regarding the merger. You gonna go tell the park manager who's home mountain is seven springs to go the fuck back to Pennsylvania? Meanwhile they're busting ass to make the moonlight parks better than they ever were even pre-merger. I am so goddamn sick of entitled Montana kids complaining about the good old days and how this place is ruined by out of staters because it makes them sound core and jaded. If ski areas could survive on the tiny Gallatin region population alone, all while paying people a hefty wage, maybe moonlight wouldn't have gone bankrupt. The local atmosphere is also definitely not gone, but what do I know, living up here and coming from the actually corporate ruined shitshow that is summit county. Believe me, you think Boyne sucks and treats people poorly, you should talk to the multitudes of people who take it up the ass from Vail resorts. Boyne has issues but I would rather work for them than almost any other large ski corporation.

Glad you have some experience and have heard the arguments from both sides. I wrongfully assumed (based on your "Fuck off" response to my comment) that you were just another one of the people I have met who have moved here and talk like they have been here forever and know what they are talking about.
First off, I don't care that people move here to ski, good for them! I would too! I don't hate out of staters. But what I do hate is when people talk as if people didn't get screwed over at moonlight, and act like boyne did nothing wrong and is a SAINT. I had countless friends who have gotten screwed over, and know many people who switched over to Bridger as a result of how Boyne handled things.
Whether you like it or not, what you claim as moonlights unchanged "locals atmosphere" is different than what people who grew up here skiing moonlight experienced. Yes it is WAY better than vail, but regardless of what you say.... IT IS DIFFERENT and it has changed from what it used to be. it is definitely way more corporate than it used to be. M-bar-t? Gone, most of the other community programs? Gone or very changed.... and beyond that, Moonlight just has an overall different vibe.
Whether you agree or not I don't care, but you should realize Moonlight HAS changed, and that's what sucks. Obviously it needed to change some as it was going bankrupt, but Boyne didn't have to treat my buddies the way they did. And you can't expect people who grew up here to roll over and take it as they see their resort get changed.
I am super stoked Big Sky is expanding their parks, and improving things, and AGAIN... I love big sky, I just don't like Boyne and don't agree with how they handled things (cas of how I saw my friends personally get screwed over) But that's just my personal opinion.
Have a good season!

It's true though. Some of the rudest people I've met are the jaded "natives" that ruin the stoke for everyone else.

Step 1:Dont let people ruin your stoke haha
Ive never seen it but Im sure it happens but you shouldn't let some douche kid ruin your day
That's why out of state tuition is so pricey and it's hard to get residency.
The locals aren't very nice:/
