Hey guys,
I am moving from the UK to Wisconsin in a couple of weeks. Is there some good touring options you would recommend in the Midwest? What are the best resorts to consider?
Thanks,

Granite Peak is pretty cool. While you said you were moving to Wisconsin, Welch Village in Minnesota is pretty rad as well. Cascade Mountain by Portage is a little smaller but still pretty sick. Mount La Crosse is good as well.
Spirit Mtn. and Trollhaugen are also decent if you're near them.
Here's a random gif thats cool
Not a ton of options for touring since Midwest is limited by terrain and snow. Got out a few times last year in WI and skinned some laps in some glades and an old ski area but vert was typically under 300' and I know I was trespassing. The UP of MI has some terrain and enough of a snowpack for some fun walkabouts (Keweenaw peninsula, porcupine mts). A lot of the north woods are pretty thick so some recon or local knowledge is helpful. Mt Bohemia is one of the few "resorts" I'd recommend, but there are a lot of small hills with lifts to scratch the skiing itch.
Wisconsin -
Trollhaugen
Granite
Rib Mountain
MN-
Spirit Mountain (way up north)
Afton Alps
Elm Creek is really fun, but not worth the drive if your not close
Hyland Hills if you are desperate
Wild Mountain
If you want powder the keweenaw peninsula in the UP. Pretty hilly and over 300" of snow per year. Other than that we have small hill where even the tree runs are groomed.
you may want to consider lightweight tele or backcountry xc skiing instead cause in the midwest your gonna have lots of little hills rather then big ones
its also a good way to make it more exciting, what seems easy on downhill skis is pretty scary on tele stuff if your new to it
Mt bohemia along with the other options in the UP/Keweenaw peninsula.
not really, UP and maybe up near superior but it's just not worth the time.
Granite is sick. where you moving to in wiscompton
I would think if you get out to some river valleys there may be decent slopes to ski. The brush is usually pretty thick in most places so picking lines is kinda rough. If you're up for the commitment, Bohemia sells a season pass for 99$ on Dec 5th only. Pays for itself in two days of skiing. Typically there's lots of snow, good bump and tree skiing, and its nice and steep.
Troll, Spirit Mountain, Hyland, Powder. If you ever find yourself at Buena Vista or Andes hit me up, lets shred
If you want really bad skiing, but with lots of newschoolers come to Alpine Valley in East troy, wi.
Check out the areas around Marquette and Munising in the UP January-February- guys at Downwind Sports will have info about backcountry up der.

One of my two home mountains is Mt. Lacrosse and unless you're gonna be really close I wouldn't recommend buying a pass there. It is a mountain that is really fun to go to once or twice, but there's nothing there that makes it stand out above somewhere like Granite Peak, Afton Alps, Giant's Ridge, Spirit Mountain, etc.
If you hit it at the right time though you can buy a season pass for about $200 and get it for 1 1/2 years. It's a pretty good deal for the size of the mountain
GherbsSpirit gang or die
spirit gang took your girl out for a nice dinner at va bene
roddy116I don't think op knows what touring is.
yeah wait a minute why are you "touring" at resorts op
Damn near every resort is worth a visit. No sense in listing any because everyone above has already did a pretty good job.
I'd definitely recommend a trip to Mount Bohemia though.
Yeah Mount Bohemia is a must. They have some new stuff opening this year so that should be pretty cool.
The Lutsen Mountains in northern Minnesota are probably the closest you can get to mountain skiing in the Midwest. It has terrible parks though, if you want kickers, go to Afton Alps in MN. Vail just bought it out to try and encourage people to go West. Season passes get you a large discount on the resorts out west. Vail also remade it's entire park, and it's really nice now. Wild mountain had a 60 ft kicker last season if you like that. Trollhaugen is well balanced as well. Good luck on moving here, the midwest is know for its hospitality.
The pic below was Afton's park last year

I haven't heard these words in years
Afton, Trollhaugen, and Wild Mountain are without a doubt the best in my opinion.

I laughed a little. They used to be a tight place (before I even learned how to ski) but now they charge a ridiculous price for lift tickets and usually don't even have all of their lifts open. Their park has been horrid the past few years. I still have hope though, they are putting in a rope tow and could possibly make the rail park legit!
Last time I went their the rails were so damn rusty and sticky that I'd always stop halfway through them. I ended up throwing my pole against a rail in frustration and now I don't have a pair of park poles anymore. Hopefully they make something happen this year.

For the life of me.
In any feasible capacity I possess to understand.
I cannot.
For the life of me.
Comprehend why you have chosen to suggest welch village.
This man will arrive in America and end up with severe disappointment and discontent after the ordeal is through.
I would much rather:
A.) Have a large black man named Requis cover my head with a bed sheet and proceed to skull fuck me to no end.
B.) Have a man forcefully stick a Q-Tip into my 'ejaculation ventilation'
C.) Drive an extra 3 hours to hyland.
D.) Fondle the girl from precious.
Couldnt agree more m8

MNSkiersHylands got a pretty neat setup mid season
Don't listen to this guy. Hyland is frickin terrible! I went to Minneapolis to visit my Aunt over winter break and I went to Hyland one day and it sucked. It was really crowded and the rails were really bumpy and sticky. And when I would try to hit a feature snowboarders would always come up really close behind me and yell at me to move. This never happens at good parks like Keystone.

I don't think you've had enough exposure to the Midwest.
Snake or be snaked, nerd.
The fact that you compared keystone to hyland makes me want to:
A.) strangle your fuckin NOODLE of a neck
B.) Have previously mentioned Requis skull fuck you
C.) strangle ur fuckin NOOdLE of a neck
Midwest is strictly hot Ryders. You obviously cannot comprehend the concept to any extent, if you delve any further into it I would suggest putting ice on your head.
I think
You should just stick your head in a bucket of sand and think about what you have done. Birds do it sometimes.
Chestnut Mountain, IL is a hidden gem resort that's totally worth the visit
so if you mean visiting. Buck hill is always epic, im not sure if they are still working with destoylabs so it might not be as great. but if so, go straight there because its amazing.
Touring in the Midwest? It's called crosscountry skiing

Aahahahaha - this made my day.
I am using the term 'touring' loosely here. The idea being to skin up for a couple of short runs maybe in and around resort. Thanks for all the suggestions tough - will head out to mount Bohemia and UP as soon as my gear gets in!
