i fell like in today's society everyone is anti gun and obviously with all the shooting something with gun control doesn't work..
Bill.NyeWhat's right with America?
Well, advocating for people to use guns to kill cops isn't. Just because a few highly publicized cops did some terrible shit, doesn't mean that the tens of thousands of other cops around the country are bad people too. Generalization and mass assumptions are bullshit.
Monsieur_PatateHonestly I don't really care about guns, I don't own one. That being said, I don't really understand how universal background checks is going to be an issue to you gun aficionados, expect if you are mentally unstable or something. People are still going to be able to buy their guns, the plan is just to make sure psychos can't easily purchase one, so why are jimmies being rustled that much?
No one cares about the extra background checks. In fact, most responsible gun owners support it. For example, when I acquired my concealed pistol license, I got my fingerprints taken at the police station, I filled out an application, and upon approval I got a license signed by the county sheriff, allowing me certain privileges and responsibilities.
People are so upset about some of the laws not because of the background checks specifically, but because a few of them are specifically designed to make it as hard as possible for normal people to purchase weapons or ammunition. Especially in california these days. Heavy taxation on even small amounts of ammunition. Federal background checks and applications and waiting periods everytime someone buys a box of ammo. Making it illegal to "transfer" weapons without filing paperwork and paying a fee is a big one here in washington, where the law is so vague that even safely handing a rifle to your hunting partner before crossing a fence, and then receiving it back is a crime. Or even sharing weapons while target shooting. Its not just about these minor laws in effect right now either. Many, many organizations and sensational soccer moms are calling for the banning of guns and all kinds of rash, extreme laws. Nothing wrong with anyone disagreeing with that, but when they do its all "those crazy gun nuts are at it again with their baby killing magazine clip ghost guns".
Get a grip.
I consider myself liberal on quite a few matters, but I believe in gun rights. Does something need to be done about gun violence and the mass shootings as of late? Absolutely. But access to guns, regardless of financial or social standing, is something that is never going to go away. Education and proper parenting are key. The problem isn't just that guns exist. It's the people who get their hands on them and choose to do bad things.

JAHpowI've delayed creating my AR build thread due to all the resent gun uproar on here. But now seeing this calm thread it may be time to post.
fuck that, do it
I feel as if all the gun control is based off of what liberals see as "scary" looking guns because most of them have never even seen that damn gun in real life!
Steezy_GI feel as if all the gun control is based off of what liberals see as "scary" looking guns because most of them have never even seen that damn gun in real life!
So you think if they saw the gun in real life you think they would automatically be less scared of it?
Their dislike of the gun as very little to no bearing on having seen one in real life. I think it would take a bit more than simply seeing one in order to change their opinion about it.
Fuck off with The gun control bullshit.
The United States doesn't have a homocide problem.

fyi more people are killed by screwdrivers than guns a year.
integralmgmtTo me, gun use in America is a major problem. I can't go into this pretending the goal is to stop mass shootings - what gets media attention - because it isn't, and to say we can prevent all mass shootings is misleading (and extremely improbable).
Yup, but strong gun control measures will significantly reduce the number of mass shootings and gun violence in general... this has been proven time and time again. But hey, let's just ignore all that because people are too stupid to tell the difference between regulations and all out bans.

.lenconI feel like taxes should be a flat rate more or less. And I hate seeing my tax dollars go to waste
1) Economics is not based on your feels, Flat taxes are hugely regressive because of this thing that exists called minimum cost of living.
2) They aren't your tax dollars.

Bro are you really so fucking stupid as to think that right at the same moment in time that video cameras connected to the internet became cheap and popular there was a huge uptick in police violence against poor people and especially people of color? This stuff happens all the time, and BEEN happening. the Police exist to exert social control over the working class.
All cops are bastards.
Just give everyone in America a gun. It's gotten to the point where any rational gun control is out the window. At Least you'll be safe in a zombie apocalypse

2)Unlike you I have a job and pay taxes so yes they are.

.lencon1) you think the rich should be taxed a ridiculously high amount?2)Unlike you I have a job and pay taxes so yes they are.
Taxes are based on your ability to pay principal. Yeah it kinda sucks to be rich and pay 45% of your income in tax. But you still have a lot more disposable income to re-invest into other capital. Where as a poor person does not.

True. Im sorry for saying flat rate taxes, as I don't necessarily believe that. However I do think the margin for paying taxes is ridiculous. Poor pay 10% and rich pay 45%. Yeah the rich still have more, but its also still their hard earned money. I think it would be fair to have poor pay around 10% middle class around 15% and rich around 20% and then the government should actually use our money towards something useful.

Avoiding my point. Ok. Yes, there is police violence. Yes, lots of bad shit happens. Yes, some police do bad things. Does Every single cop out there do bad things? No. Again, there are more cops out there than just the bad ones you see on tv. I know plenty of cops personally, and quite a few of them are very decent people.
Bill.NyeFor the record, I said "shoot" not "kill."
Like that's any better. Jesus.
nocturnalYou defiantly have shootings and people who kill themselves with guns..... that being said now that I don't live by NYC I'm looking into getting my first gun thats not a .22, talk to a gun store last week. Still shocked at how easy it was to buy a gun. Everyone on here thinks that because I want more checks, that equals to I want guns banned I don't.
I never realized how easy it was to buy a gun before buying a 22. There are a few things I found to be ridiculous but mainly the fact that I could get a gun in about 10 minutes and it only took that long because of the background check. Yes there was a background check but why should someone walk in and out of a Walmart with a gun like they would for getting a few groceries. 24 hour waiting period seems like a logical step in the right direction.
Secondly, I think people should be required to go through some sort of safety class before buying a gun. Many states require a safety course before getting a hunting license so do something similar for the purchase of firearms. Ya I get it "this violates your rights" but lets be honest, if you are around guns semi regularly, you've seen someone do something dangerous with a gun, whether its flagging you with the barrel or not checking the chamber or its bad trigger control, some basic education could eliminate those bad habits.
Finally, something needs to change since we as a nation have shown we can not responsibly own firearms. I like guns and enjoy hunting and casual shooting. I think they should be available to the general public but I also think that we have a serious problem when there are mass shootings every week if not day. I am open to solutions other than regulating guns more but so far, I am not convinced there is a better alternative.

There is a 3 day waiting period for purchasing a handgun, at least in Washington. If you go through the process of getting concealed pistol license from your local police department, you don't have to wait the 3 days. Although, for the most part, people going to buy a gun and that same day using it to kill people isn't really the main issue.

I agree that people using it to kill people don't buy a gun the same day generally but I think it could help with accidental shootings or suicides

I disagree about accidental shootings. Delaying a day generally won't make anyone any smarter about gun safety, where the lack there of causes a majority of negligent misfires, aka "accidents". Although you do have a point about suicides, but that is part of the reason we have the 3 day rule with handguns. Less people try to off themselves with a long gun.
Many people don't like the constitution the events of Roe vs Wade, gun rights, or the recent legalization of gay marriage that has brought about numerous lawsuits resulting in people losing their business because they get fined 6 figures for turning down a customer.
When a decision is made, it's made and that's how it needs to be. I have two pistols of which both have roughly 18 round magazines, a 223 with a 30 rd magazine, and a 308 with a 20 round magazine. Do I need these at all? Absolutely fuckin not, but I can so I do because I had the money.
People profit.

As long as the rich are not allowed to use tax breaks and deductions, then I would be in favor of that. Right now, the rich most certainly do not pay a 45% rate. In many instances it is below 10% given all of the breaks and deductions they are given.
Right now the percentage of total income in America going to people who are in the top 1% has doubled over the past 30 years. It used to be 10% back in 1980 and now it is 20%. This means that richest 400 people in America have more money than the first 150 million, and they have to take it from somewhere: the middle and lower class. The rich can afford to pay more taxes because they literally doubling their income while the middle and lower classes are losing it.

Oh yeah for sure. It wouldn't work at all if they took the loop holes.
Also I watched that video yesterday. It was pretty intetesting but I'm not sure how it ended because my wifi went out with 10 minutes left. Do you recall the vote?

That's rad, I'm glad you watched that. The team against the motion (against "the rich are taxed enough") won because they proved (I would argue) that if we get rid of all of the loopholes/deductions/exceptions etc then the rich will be taxed more than they are now. In doing so the effective tax rate for the rich necessarily goes up. So, by definition when that happens then the rich get taxed more.

.lenconI hate liberals for the most part. They want everyone to be able to do there own thing. And be equal. And have peace. Doesn't make sense to me.Anyway guns are good. If someone really wants to shoot someone, you can. We own like 10 guns in my house. One of them is an AR-15.
Also my school was on lockdown today due to threats. It's a messed up world.
Im a libreal but im down with guns we have about 20 of them from 22 s to 50 cals they are just something we should have but we shouldnt give one to everyone

Yessir. And honestly it's pretty easy to buy a gun. If you're deranged enough to shoot people you'll probably buy a gun on the black market
I live and shoot in Australia and our gun control doesn't work. There is still regular shootings that happen (with illegal guns). At the moment, we have two people on the run from police who last I read were shooting at police with an SKS.
All these restrictions have done is make it ridiculously hard for Australians to get higher capacity and semi-automatic firearms, its done bugger all to reduce gun violence.

You know, by the silly stuff you say and the people in california, your actually right.
but either way here is a nice paper with plenty of sources for the "highly educated" NSer.

FACT: I have never seen a website skew stats so hard to push an obvious agenda.
skiermanOh really? And how many mass shootings have you had recently? Also could you provide some stats showing how gun violence has increased since the regulations?
When you look at the statistics there was a downward trend in gun related homicides that started long before the 1996 gun reforms were introduced. There's also a graph floating around somewhere that shows the rate of knife usage going up at a similar rate to the gun usage going down, seems to show us that the people who carry out these attacks will find any means necessary.
N.Z. hasn't had a massacre since 1994 and they still have access to semi-automatic's, suppressors and other various bits that are banned/very difficult to get in Australia. What it's come down to is the oppression of LAFO's in Australia with no impact on the people who are actually committing any crime.
skiermanFACT: I have never seen a website skew stats so hard to push an obvious agenda.
Yeah, I don't think anyone can take statistics that come from a site like that as legitimate or unbiased at all.
You might as well ask a Ford salesman if you should buy a Chevy or a Ford truck... The holes in this logic are deeper than the one Darth Maul fell down after he was chopped in half.
shooting guns is fun. Shooting lots of bullets really fast is fun. I'm a free American, I get to enjoy both of those. Don't like it? Shove your head up your own ass and look for Belgum.
Regardless:
Small arms remain the international standard of violence. Not living in some bitch ass country that values stupid shit like equality over freedom, I have a right to that standard in order to protect my life, liberty, and property from those who would wish to take them from me. never know when God's gonna need you to clean up the gene pool; 230gr at a time.
The fact that buying and owning more guns pisses off whiney bitch liberals is an added bonus. They get irritated so easily, it's fun.
"He/she makes too much money - waaa"
"He believes something I don't - waaa"
"They have guns, I don't understand - Waaa"
More guns the better. Hopefully we can get around to getting short barreled rifles and suppressors off the NFA list.

Lets be friends.
Related, with the proper paperwork with the govt and a small fee, sbr's and suppressors are something you can almost easily attain. My buddy is actually building a .300BLK sbr as we speak.
WA isn't SBR friendly right now.
I shouldn't have to write the gov a $200 check and wait a few months to protect my hearing and reduce the noise pollution.

lol thats sucks man, isnt everything capped off at a max of 10 rounds in NY? unfortunately colorado is heading down the same path they keep gradually implementing more and more restrictions.
very few people actually need guns and very few people should have them. fuck the nra and thank god for gun control
