Has anyone had a chance to ski J Skis The Metal yet? I know they're brand spankin new. I'm between The Metal and the Sir Francis Bacon's for a quiver of on, aggressive East coast ski. I'm feeling like the Metal's will be a little bit less playful on the soft stuff and in the trees but will be better on groomers. And we all know how much fun the SFB's are. Thought's on the comparison?
well they are two very opposite skis. i think you meant the J vacation. the metal is a mid width stiff flex all mtn charger that happens to have a twin. while the sfb is a soft to medium flex all mtn jib ski. the metal and bacon are almost incomparable i think you should rethink your list and then post again.
I actually talked to jlev about the the metal and from what i gather, the Metal rips groomers like a race ski but is a great side and even back country ski. Good float even in up to a foot of fresh.
I think the down side is kind of what you were saying. It is a bit stiff, and not very playful. park,
I have never ridden this model but the videos and awards for this ski really to attest to its versatility.
I wrote out a response about how I think versatile skis are meh in soft snow, talking about the bonafide. But then I remembered that jlev had already designed a super versatile ski that utilized metal but in not quite a traditional way. Google up on the prophet 100 if you haven't already. Heres what jlev had to say comparing the two:
" I assume you know I designed the Prophet 100 and honestly that is pretty much the most award wining ski I've ever made. The Metal is honestly the equivelent to the more modern version of that ski as well as 6mm wider. It's got rocker but shares the same Prophet-like sidecut that will carve effortlessly on edge except the Metal floats like the Prophet never did in pow. Check out this vid of it carving. amazingly quick for a 106 width and the reason it won awards from all 4 magazines https://instagram.com/p/8t97z8gZvf/?taken-by=j_skis "
the last gen sfb (108 underfoot) is one of the most fun skis I have ever been on. I've never ridden the metal, but if you are comparing the last gen sfb to the metal I would imagine this comes down to question of preferring composure through carved turns vs. the ability the play and get the most amount of pop and energy out of your skis on every terrain feature. Email jlev tho, he was super easy to get ahold of and responded a few hours after I initiated contact.

No ski rips groomers like a race ski unless its a race ski, my Legend Pros will carve a trench down a groomer and destroy any resort pow or 3d snow, but the do not even come close to how my GS skis work, my Kastle MX88's are the closest thing to a non plated ski that I have used and are far more versatile.
It wiill be interesting to see how these stack up to something like them which are the gold standard of resort destroying skis.
