So there's a chance I may end up in the rochester area the next 4 years for school. Can anyone chime in on what the area is like and what the closest and best skiing options are around the area?
and by best skiing i really meant best park skiing
Yo! I'm from there area, and the best place to go for park is probably Alpine Valley - about 30 minutes away. I'll probably go towards Pine Nob more after school since I go to Oakland University not too far away. When you coming out here?
If you want to drive a bit Brighton has the best park, its really more like 5 parks. Vail put 10 million into it and its sick now

Plus isn't that hornbecks home turf?
I believe it used to be, not totally sure tho

Cool! Thanks for the reply. Im actually interviewing at oakland's med school haha, so Ill likely be in the area in december. Dont know if its worth bringing any of my ski equipment out there though since Ill have no car. I would consider driving out to oakland but figured a drive from nj to michigan would be a hassle in the winter. If I do end up getting in and deciding on oakland Ill be there starting next august. Good to see there are some other ns'ers in the area though!
Do people often make trips up to the UP for some of the skiing there? Ive heard amazing things about it and feel like its a hidden gem. Seeing some pictures and videos from the UP got me super excited about potentially going to oakland but Im not sure how feasible that 5-10 hour drive would be haha.

I've never been up to the UP for skiing but Bohemia is a hidden gem. The run there are never groomed, powder, and get around 300-400 inches of snow in a single season. I don't know how my skis would handle all that powder but I definitely wanna make a trip up there. My friends and I usually try to make a trip or two for a few nights at Boone or nubs nob. If you're coming out here, please do bring your skis. I'm always open to meeting new ns'ers.

Just saw some quick edits and pictures of the parks at all 3 of the resorts mentioned so far. Brighton's park looks awesome!

Crazy enough man, I've actually never been to Brighton. I've never been to excited about any of the southeast Michigan ski areas but it wasn't until a few months ago, people were telling me that if park is your thing, Brighton is the place to go. Alpine is a unique park area as well.

Maybe I will bring my skis then haha. If I do Ill likely drive in, but Ive got some time to think about this since its not til december. If Im 100% bringing my skis though Ill definitely shoot you a pm.
Resorts are typically open early december in the area right? Im gonna be in rochester during the 2nd week of december.

Well I'll be here. I live in the neighboring city and go to Oakland university. The local ski areas will be open depending on the weather. I hope it's early November but sometimes we get a warm front and can't seem to keep the snow from not melting. But the resorts upstate will most certainly be open by the time you get here.
I ski Pine Knob, I've never been really big into park but I'm going to focus on it more this year. Their parks aren't terrible

Same. Pine Knob's park is okay, but alpine is too bad either. It changes every year but a few people have told me about brighton and definitely looking to mob over there since it's local. need to get all the detroit area skiers together for a trip up to nubs or even blue mountain in ontario.
I went to Brighton once last year in early December, its amazing to see what 10 million can do. I grew up skiing there, but switched to Pine Knob a few years because of the drive. They only had a few rails up when I was there, but the takeoffs and landings were maintained every hour, unlike most Michigan parks, all rutted out. Great snow too. I would go there more often but its 45 minutes from me.
Cannonsburg in Grand Rapids has a sick park too

I love cannonsburg. Haven't been there in years but definitely trying to get a road trip out there for.
good to hear brighton's park is well maintained. does it get super crowded there on the weekends with people forming long lines in between each feature with long lift lines also? this is what happens out here in nj at least since we get a large wave of people every weekend from northern nj/southern ny and nyc.
Not sure I only went once, when I went there was somewhat of a line, not too bad really
I am def trying to get over to the east side this year. I ski at bittersweet. Its a really fun place. They got a good park and if you go before 3pm it is empty all week. No lines or people in the park.
I would for sure drive you car. You will want a car. And bring your skis for sure. I dont know what else there is to do if your not skiing in the winter? Would be sick to shred with yall. It would be sick to organize some ski days where everyone meets up.

Dude, I would be so down to meet up with a group out here to ski with during the weekend Im in the area. I'll definitely keep you guys posted on what my specific plans are but Im definitely leaning more toward driving over now. Also on a side note, I think its so sick to see a big name in the skiing industry so active on their regional forums wanting to meet up with other ns'ers in the area. I dont know how many other big name guys do that since Im normally checking out the mid-atlantic region forums (it never happens there), but this is a first for me and Ive been on ns for about a decade now.
brighton has opened close to november 15th for the last 2 years. hoping for the same this year, i have a season pass there
Any word on whether brighton will be open this weekend or not? Looking for any places near rochester to ski at this saturday, but it seems like all the resorts in the area are temporarily closed!
