What's your opinion? Have you skiied there what're the locals like? I can't think of any other reason why they wouldn't allow other snow-lovers alike to ride their mountain other than the fact they're all a bunch of prudes.
The locals are pretty cool guys. They just prefer more pristine conditions, and most snowboarders tend to make conditions pretty bad.

That's such bullshit. There a ton of gaper or at least shitty fucking skiers that flock to those kind of places saying "down with the snowboarders".
Depending on the mountain I'm at I'll sometimes see far more garbage skiers wedging, sideslipping, or straight penguin sliding steeper terrain in tears.
In 2015 we still have idiots like visual who don't seem to grasp this. Will probably post next season wearing nothing but an american flag in the name of FREEEEEEEDDDDOOOOOOMMMM.
Even on bumps. Bumps are def a skier thing far more than a boarder thing. That said there are a ton of boarders that could tear through a mogul run faster than the skiers.
I love delusional gapers that think they're somehow saving the snow. The only one I really understand is deer valley because the website even states "We cater to rich gaper assholes who have no concept of skiing or the world in general". As far as Alta and MRG it's just herp derp city.
Once the older generation dies off maybe things will change. Sorry guys, black people can drink from the same water fountain, and snowboarders can can probably shred harder than you.
Alta is all about its character. Its a small place and the old white men who run it are over-protective of what they have. Should they let snowboarders in? Probably. Will they? No.
This is a tired topic. Alta is fucking amazing and if you have not been there you should go. Just don't try and ride it on your center-mounter afterbangs or you will have a bad time!
Are a lot of flats, also some areas you have to hike up and you're not supposed to take your skis off. Not great justification but thats what they say.

Borty I was being sarcastic.
To OP: It's not the locals fault. The locals Ive interacted with are some chill guys. (probably because they were stoked, 20 year old kids). I'm guessing it was the owner's decision to make alta snowboard only.

As much as I agree snowboarders should be allowed everywhere at MRG I heard the main issue is the single chair. To unload you have to stand up and quickly skate off to the side instead of just going straight.
You have an interesting definition of 'prudes'.
Anyways, I skied alta for 4 years and i've ski with snowboarders many times in my life, I don't think snowboarders would like alta. You traverse to 90% of the good terrain and 50% of that time the traverse is flat as fuck and you have to push with your poles or side step. Also, the majority of that terrain ends in a long flat section so you can get back to the lifts (some short, some long depending on how far you traverse in the first place).
Alta really isn't that big either, its probably 1/3 the size of snowbird, there are 7 other resorts within an hour, 3 of which are in the same zone that allow snowboarding, just go somewhere else. The fact snowboarders/random other people make a big deal about alta not allowing snowboarders just make its worse, if you just ignore it and stop worrying about it there won't be a problem.

Ah true. On this issue it's hard to tell on here

I'm sure I wouldn't have a problem getting off the lift. I'm sure there are some skiers that struggle to get off said lift.
And Eheath. Ive ridden some places that were laid out linear and all the good terrain was a solid traverse out and a huge flat traverse back to get to the lifts and still enjoyed it. I might get tired faster than my skier friends trying to get along the flats but still had a good time.
I think it's less about me wanting to go there and more that I hate old people skiing on their 210 straight skis talking about the good old days, how women shouldn't vote, black people should be in the back of the bus, and snowboarders should be shot on site.
eheaththere are 7 other resorts within an hour, 3 of which are in the same zone
This is true. Not allowing snowboarding would be a problem if there were no other resorts around.

your response didn't correlate with my question in any way. I wasn't wondering about the size of Alta or if there were any cat tracks for the poor snowboarders to struggle with.
I was wondering about the people that call Alta home, about their pride and overall demeanor. Someone that's a prude would think they know everything/better than everyone else, alot like what I see from eheaths comments? Yes alta is a great spot but is it too worthy for a snowboarder to ride at? ha never.

The words you're looking for are stuck up, arrogant, smug, etc. Prude has always had a very childish meaning of a girl/guy who wouldn't put out. Maybe thats just me.
Anyways, yes there are plenty of arrogant old timers at alta, thats just how it is and will be. However, there is a large amount of younger (18-35) skiers that are fucking awesome and welcome anyone.
One day the younger generation will run alta and snowboarders will be allowed, could be sooner than you think if all these one wasatch/mountain accord people get their way in the next 5-10 years.

Honestly dude, you are the fucking worst.
Also OP, Prude: a person who is or claims to be easily shocked by matters relating to sex or nudity.
It's a strange rule, but whatever keeps the crowds down I guess.

All of you took the bait so hard
Funny this is posted because I had a conversation about this yesterday. My friend and I both decided we'd never skied somewhere where people talk to you on the chairlift and invite you to ski with them more often than at Alta. It's awesome. Lots of people talk shit about Alta and the "altitude" but I have not experienced that.
As for the snowboarder thing, I'm not really sure about that. Point of post, Alta Rules.
I will always have respect for Alta because that is where Chads Gap is.
Hey man, at least Alta has soul, unlike Snowbird.
HolteHey man, at least Alta has soul, unlike Snowbird.
yeah. Bird is waay to corporate and snooty, its a real buzzkill.
its an inferiority complex. The locals hate seeing people ski "their snow", and they hate you even more if you can ski it better than them.
If you never skied bumps in the 90s, Alta is one of your only chances to see what they used to be like...and why bump skiing was the bees knees at the time.
Whether a boarder is good or not, when they ride on a bump run the moguls turn out different due to the differences between a snowboard and ski turn.
I ride almost exclusively with snowboarders, and doubt that I'll ever bother to ski Alta again. But when I did, it was the most fun I've had on moguls in a decade and I respect the historic preservation of mogul skiing for future generations.
DeebieSkeebiesand they hate you even more if you can ski it better than them.
oh shit they'd hate me!
snowboarders are criminals

Alta is where you go to see your orthodontist yell at his kids.
My boss and I were at Alta yesterday, working for Alta Earth Day. He grew up in Utah, PC specifically, and I have been here for a few years now. We both agreed without a doubt that there is no other resort in the Wasatch like Alta. The vibe there is better then Snowbird, Brighton, DV, PCMR, Canyons, or Solitude. So no, I don't think they are "prudes" (even though you have a serious misunderstanding of the word prude).
Disclaimer... I have an Alta season pass and a DV season pass, fuck snowboarders ;)

this is all true but it sucks when I get to the top of a chute and its been "groomed" by some jerrycunt snowboarder who decided it was too scary

Intranets, now available in an even more serious flavor.
mehregan15Can I pay you to see this? Pleaseeee.
We had to ride a bump run down to the service center at beav all year. Earlier in the season I was crushing the bumps. Till mid season noobs fucked them all up and they became so mismatched and garbage they weren't even worth fucking with(and almost everyone that goes down that run is a skier, like 90+%)
cabdriverthis is all true but it sucks when I get to the top of a chute and its been "groomed" by some jerrycunt snowboarder who decided it was too scary
For sure, def more common in that setting although I see plenty of skiers side slips and do ghetto wedge turns down stuff wayyyyy out of their ability level.
I think we're all on the same page here though, burn the gapers and let everyone else have fun right?
Alta skiers are so prude, they just don't put out like skiers do at other resorts. It must be because they're all Mormon.
theabortionatorTill mid season noobs fucked them all up and they became so mismatched and garbage they weren't even worth fucking with
isnt that part of riding moguls? we're not in the olympics here. no resort has perfect moguls.

hey borty, not to be a prude or anything but i penguin slide a lot simply cus its fun. haters gonna hate. it really gives you an opportunity to get the 'full experience'
mehregan15isnt that part of riding moguls? we're not in the olympics here. no resort has perfect moguls.
I'm thinking my description of these moguls was not very good. Some completely flattened out, some giant growths, most of it super ditched out with walls.
I mean sure you could ski it and have fun soaking in the fact that the moguls are like the night sky and snowflakes and stuff and everywhere you look theres something pretty and unique.
Im not saying things need to be perfect but these were pretty beat. When I was enjoying them early season they were far from anything perfect, but it resembled a mogul run not a patch of fucked up tumors then
I always thought the no snowboarding rule was dumb, and I guess I still do, but it wasn't until I actually skied Alta that I sort of understood. So much traversing there and while good snowboarders know to get the hell off the track and out of the way, many of them don't. Same deal with skiers, of course, but it's less of a problem when they have poles and can at least maintain some momentum.
IMO it's true the bumps are different, not that I really care one way or the other.
mehregan15fuck snowboarders ;)
Even if you're kidding, this is a stupid thing to say. You must be stuck in 1992 if you actually think like that.
Not to mention I know quite a few snowboarders that destroy moguls and can traverse just as well as most skiers. I'm sure you like to get gnar and drink beer, but I'm still choosing to not like you based off my extreme judgment from the few dumb posts from you . Go internet?

I was kidding, and it wasn't a stupid thing to say. It was a play on a long, longgg running joke in the ski community. We're better, cooler, blah, blah, blah. Snowboarders do the same, it's all fun.
I still disagree that any snowboarder, anywhere, could do most of the traverses at Alta as good as a skier of the same ability level. Many of them are very steep and its more of an uphill climb than a traverse. A long, flat traverse? Sure. But no way could they beat a skier all the way across to something like East Greeley though. Not a chance.

Nah man real good snowboarders admit that 90% of snowboarders suck and fuck up terrain far more than competent (not just expert) skiiers. Boards will clear out a steep glade with pristine powder far faster than skis.
Alta is RIGHT in Salt Lake City. Its a heavily skiied mountain with a handful of chairs and acceptable but annoying traverses that makes the whole thing skiable. It wouldn't work with dudes on boards getting in peoples way on the traverses to the steeps and then scraping them out.
I enjoy boarding as well btw I do both. Will be a terrible day if Alta ever gives in. Deal Abortionator you can grab skis if you want to experience it its a busy but not too busy resort in a somewhat large city.
STAY STRONG ALTA!
I've only skied alta once, but everyone there seemed pretty cool. I was with my dad and we talked to a few guys on the chairlift who were nice. actually riding the hill, everyone kinda stuck to themselves, but I find this true of most ski resorts.
as for alta not allowing snowboarders, I've heard it's actually a financial decision. apparently insurance to cover snowboarders is more expensive than that of skiers, and they don't want to pay. I have no idea how true this is, however. why not just ride snowbird anyways? it's pretty comparable and the bowls are a lot more fun, IMO.
hughlorinI have no idea how true this is,
It's not true.
It's a business decision. It comes down to what they're selling. Alta doesn't have shopping, fine dining or elegant lodging. You go to Alta ski powder. That's what they're selling and that's all they want to sell.
That's straight from the horse's mouth, General Manager Onno Wieringa.
This is literally the only thing they give a shit about.
