Has anyone done it without getting a student visa first? How hard was it? Any tips/tricks?
Side note: go to WSI. Don't ask questions. Just do it.

Most people I know who have managed to get their Canadian citizenship get it through being in a relationship with a Canadian or being able to fill job position that they are really good at.
That being said - most aren't American. I think it's really hard for Americans to get a Canadian citizenship and vice versa.
Enter into a loveless marriage for a few years, then bail in the middle of the night and never look back.
It would be sweet to have a dual citizenship and just move whenever you get sick of your current country.
DrailI think it's really hard for Americans to get a Canadian citizenship and vice versa.
I tried to move to calgary when I was 18 and its pretty damn impossible unless you marry like said before or be a person that has to be brought in for work because local Canadians are not specialized enough to fill the job.
Due to 9/11 America made it harder for Canadians to become US citizens and Canada responded by making it harder for US citizens to become Canadian citizens. Don't blame Canada one bit.
...You can buy your way in as well, the Canadian government sets aside a certain number of visas a year for people who invest enough money in the country; doubt the majority of NSers are in a position to do that though.
Or you could just play the NAFTA agreement to your advantage, not sure what careers it applies to, but I'm sure you'd be able to find out easily enough.
FBGMWhy do you want Canadian citizenship?
Health care, polite people, infinite maple syrup, less populated than the states, dope places to ski and ride, weed is just a slap on the wrist.

Because he was just woo'd by whistler this weekend haha
GhosterI'll marry you Troy
As long as you're a Canadian and not a Nigerian Prince who needs to move his fortune out of his country, I'm in.

Whistler ruined my life, and changed it. What's not to love about world class biking and hit-or-miss skiing?

Not world class biking but pretty good biking and mind blowing lines to ski I would check out big sky. Definitely very quiet compared to whistler though. Some love it, some hate it. I don't find many people that hate it.

I've got hook up with a house in whis as well. This might be the first gay green card marriage.

Doug, will you officiate our marriage?
my dream is to be Canadian too!!! I cant even get into the country and a bunch of my extended family lives in nova, so fucked up.
A lot of people in Whistler pull this off every year. With such a high turnover of employees, it's easy to make it to a management position fairly quickly and once there they'll do what they can to keep you. Plus they have a few really good immigration lawyers in town who do nothing but find a way to keep wayward aussies here. Basically you get a youth working holiday visa, stay at one job for two years, then apply for permanent residency.
Unfortunately for you, the US is pretty much the only country that matters that doesn't have a reciprocal agreement with Canada for these holiday visas, because you suck. So you may have to get Mexican/Irish/Korean/Costa Rican citizenship first.
Or marry me, my family has a place in Whistler so I'm totally a better match than Ghoster.

Sorry to be a dick but we probably don't want you.
This thread screams Troy. Everything I know about you is summed up in this thread.
Drives 25 hours to Whistler because why the fuck not and drinking and ski companies.
Meets everyone within 20 minutes and I'm sure was very loud.
Smokes darts, breaks hearts
He brought with him to Canada, weird white frat slender fashion and yung lean music.
Instead of just deciding to move to Whistler his social instincts force him to want to change citizenship to join the natives.
THEN posts it to the internet.
lol

The healthcare is too good to pass up.
I've always kind of wondered about this, I'd definitely do it when I'm older. Good skiing and healthcare, plus all that ham
don't do it
no one wants a canadian in the family

Move to washington. It checks all the boxes except you wont have to wait months and months for surgery, and can choose how you want to treat your medical issues!
VD.Enter into a loveless marriage for a few years, then bail in the middle of the night and never look back.
Don't forget to have a boy and name him Sue.

I don't know what you're talking about. I fucked myself up and had surgery two days later.
My dad is a citizen of Canada, would this make it easier for me to become a Canadian citizen? Cause I would love to move to whistler,
GhosterI don't know what you're talking about. I fucked myself up and had surgery two days later.
Everyone who has had to wait 6+ months to get an acl done does know what I'm talking about.
That kind of issue is the biggest critique of socialized healthcare. Now, if that truly is an issue in the grand scheme of healthcare is very much up for debate... Especially when talking about actual life saving the treatments.
Still sucks to not have the care you want, when you want it.
GhosterI don't know what you're talking about. I fucked myself up and had surgery two days later.
really depends on how serious the injury is/you could've been lucky haha
My foot was sliced open and bleeding all over the floor of the ER and I waited about 11 hours to get a couple of stitches haha.
also @californiagrown, there's still private health insurance and care you can have here, but yeah I've definitely had my fair share of fucking myself up and I've definitely been treated loads quicker in california than I have here.
Our immigration policy is balls. We make it very tough to get a visa for the states yet let fuck tons of mexicans poor over the border illegally, give them aid, talk about giving them citizen ship etc.
It suck to get a visa for America so other countries make it tough for Americans coming their as a FUCK YOU.
It's lame. Maybe not citizenship but I wish it was massively easier to get work visas in different countries. I mean, don't you want people to travel/live around the world and see everything out there? Or lets just all close our borders like douches and make everyone kick it in their homeland.
Yolo.
PS: Just marry someone, maybe you'll actually end up in love. If so you could use that as a basis for a screenplay and send it to hollywood, watch it become a blockbuster, and make millions.

once you travel around the world a bit, you will realise that being a canadian is actually a lot more favourable than being an american.

i cant believe you guys dont even have a working holiday visa. its ridiculous.
pow_pow~i cant believe you guys dont even have a working holiday visa. its ridiculous.
YEah man I feel bad for the peoples out there. Also makes it harder as an american to go places. Luckily we can still go to to nz and aussie real easy as well as some other places in the world. Still a little tougher as an american even if it's just something stupid like the $ you need to bring or the length you can stay just a small fuck you murica on the end.
It would have been cool t live earlier when the borders were more open around the world.

yessir thats me I live in Indiana but moving to Vancouver this fall for UBC

get naturalized my dude
pretty sure you can move there but you have to be there for a certain time to become a citizen, at least thats how my parents did it when they moved to the us so id imagine it's pretty similar. Lucky for me my parents are Canadian and i was born in the US so that means i have dual citizenship

Well there's the working holiday visa that people have mentioned here a couple times. The US has agreements with 5 countries, Canada has agreements with 30. So that gives us a lot more options for longterm travel.
Beyond that, it's more about how people perceive you than what your passport actually does. It seems to mostly have gone away in recent years but there is a reason a lot of American backpackers would sew a Canadian flag on their backpack, or even tell people they were Canadian if asked. People have a lot of opinions about American politics and American stereotypes, whereas Canadians they just kind of go 'oh you guys are really friendly', so Americans would go under the radar by pretending to be Canadian.

Who the fuck does that shit?
I don't even like America that much but Jesus. IF somebody asks where I'm from I'll fucking tell them. I don't care if they hate america. And who sews flags on their backpack anyway.
Idk, never seen that and it sounds pretty dumb but to each their own.

I agree it's stupid, you generally want to look as little like a traveler as possible and a flag of any sort announces your foreignness everywhere you go. But I can see why people don't want to have to listen to rants about political decisions they probably don't agree with from every cabby/fellow backpacker/whomever that they meet, and if they find sewing a maple leaf on their pack is what makes the difference then more power to them. The US is such an influential country at this point that it seems like everyone has an opinion about its politics and policy that they're eager to share. I know if I wanted to talk about Canada and what a schmuck Harper is I would just stay here, if I'm somewhere else it's so I can experience that place and its culture. Luckily Canada doesn't matter enough for people to ever want to discuss our myriad of recent fuckups, so as mentioned before I basically get a 'oh that's cool' or 'oh Canada is great' and things move on.
That said I think the practice has mostly died out since Bush left (or maybe since people became so aware of it).
