I'm kind of new in following park skiing and competition, and I see some edits here of people who are really throwing down and going hard jumps/rails and that just ooze style, but I haven't heard of their names before or seen them in the xgames/dew tour/ext lineup. So is there just a big gap in skill that I can't see because I'm new to this, or do only some people try to go the competition route?

Both
Case in point: Sean Jordan currently
Sorry meant to say there is sometimes a gap in skill, and sometimes they just choose not to go.
But an example of someone who I feel could do really well at X-Games/Dew Tour but seems to decide not to compete much is Sean Jordan

Thanks for your input. I looked up some of his stuff, and yeah he seems really good, doing the same stuff in his edits that the pros do in theirs.
Of course there is... there's no doubt that allot of these guys who only film and don't compete in Xgames/Dew/etc.. that could podium those events. Some rather film and huck huge BC lines than spend 3 months setting one run that will make or break their season. Take Red bull super/ultra natural for an example... although it it snowboarding it has the same idea.. It takes riders from the xgames that can throw back to back triples with ease, and guys who can throw the most laid out backflips off of next to near impossible terrain in the BC. This comp ties them all together and shows that just because you're not a mechanical machine throwing quad corks doesnt mean you cant keep up with the current comp scene.
Rant over.
Comp skiing is not the end all be all. Its the easiest way to get paid/sponsored, but thats not what its all about. You can be a pro skier by being a film skier. There are many talented skiers that choose to film because it offers a lot of freedom/creativity that isn't currently available in a slopestyle format.
More skiers that you should look up that no longer compete on a high level or maybe never did:
Phil Casabon
Cole Drexler
Will Wesson
Jon Brogan
Magnus Graner
Mitchel Brower
You have to get an invitation to go to x games/dew tour/ and most of the highest level contests. Most of the pros you are talking about probably don't get invited Because they haven't completed in lower
level slope and pipe events. I'm guess very few pro skiers would decline an invite to a top level event. It's great exposure for both them and their sponsors even if they don't podium.
If any of them could, they would. none of them turn down money haha.
They would do the Skiboss thing- film up until 2 weeks before X-games, win gold, and then go back to filming. the rest of the year.
The tricks you see in edits are 1 off tricks. Now link 6 bangers together in flat light with changing snow conditions, and wind gusts on huge jumps and features and you now have comp conditions.

none of those skiers would come remotely close to being able to win x-games the way the judging currently is. granted, they're all amazing skiers and I enjoy watching them ski more than I do most x-games competitors, but they aren't skiers who could come compete at x and stand a chance at winning like OP was asking for.
and the only skier who comes to mind who could win if you held x-games tomorrow who isn't competing any more would be Andreas Hatveit.
The only person I could see coming back from full time filming and competing in X is Sammy, and he is still pretty fresh off the circuit. I can't see anyone else dropping straight back into competing and actually making an impact or putting up a decent placing.
Also, there are only 16 spots at x-games and I believe it's quite difficult to get them. I could be completely wrong, but I think so many of the spots are invites and the rest need to qualify through dew tour and other comps. I think a lot of pros (Sean Jordan is a pro) dont make it or don't bother because of the qualification. You gotta beat even the most versed slope style juggernauts a handful of times just to get in.

You're right, i was just using my list to try to expose OP to a different genre of pro since he is new and seems to be missing out on skiers like this.
skiforce1this fits here
Disney used to be the shit

Not sure if I would necessarily say these skiers spend 3 months trying to set one run to make or break their season. I know for example, Tom Wallisch this year was out filming urban with Good Company up until a week before the X-Games and other skiers as well are out filming for a movie, project etc.
Dean bercovitch could get in IMO if he competed more to get noticed by xgames/ dew
I chose not to compete in xgames because I'm not really a fan of the big contests.
