So the decision for me has been getting more an more real lately. I've constantly been put down by friends and random people at the hill and been told my filming blows and sucks, etc. I have no one else to film at my hill and have been pondering the idea of quitting filming for awhile now and thinking of switching to just skiing by myself and quitting park skiing as well. What do you guys think about this and have you guys ever had to deal with bullshit like this?
DONT QUIT! keep the camera and just film if you want to.
Phil_MckayDONT QUIT! keep the camera and just film if you want to.
I have nothing TO film. Like I only filmed skiing and that's the only I like to film and there is no one to film anymore.
Don't quit if you have a passion, find something else in film. The hard part about filming action sports is that your video is only as good as the skier in front of the camera. If you want to continue with filmmaking, look into some narrative or documentary work! I'm slowly transitioning out of action sport filmmaking myself. There's a lot more to filmmaking than skiing.

I have tried stuff like that but I don't enjoy it that much myself. The skiing was on point it's just that I'm not getting the respect that I deserve.

You get the fuck out there, you throw the fuck down and don't take shit from no one. Your just getting started, your no eheath. Who gives a fuck what other people think? I suck at everything. Fuck it and do you man. Do what makes you happy whether you quit filming or not just do what makes you happy.
I know how you feel. Being a ski filmer can get really aggravating and I've been in the same situation as you, but if you love it, find a new group of people. There are so many guys that want to be filmed so it shouldn't be too hard to find a new group.

Small mountain so pretty much everyone that's like halfway decent are friends or friends of friends with them.

I guess this inspires a few questions....
A) how old are you?
B) how much respect do you think that you deserve?
C) why do you feel disrespected? specific examples
D) how long have you been doing this?
E) why are you doing this? (end goal?)
F) THE MOST IMPORTANT QUESTION: how are you treating others?
from the posts you have made and the edits that i have seen you put out recently it looks like you are still learning, but it definitely looks like you have been improving, and it also doesn't look like you suck either. maybe it has something to do with your outlook as well as how your treating others?
I'm not the best filmer by any means, nor have I been doing it a long time, but I am fairly modest and respectful of how I treat people, and I always send people their raw clips and give them credit where its due.Even if i am the one editing, i will send out drafts and see if they want something changed (they have a right to a say in how they are portrayed, and if they dont want a particular clip in the edit), and when i'm done i will send them the raw clips anyway (season edit or whatever they want to do with them). i have found that people are really receptive to this and i have found that i can text someone (with a few days notice) and ask if they want to go filming. I haven't got a flat out no yet, the occasional reschedule, but never a no.

F) THE MOST IMPORTANT QUESTION: how are you treating others?
A) 18
B) Enough to be treated like a human being.
C) "friends" are talking behind my back trying to get people to remove my edits even though when they first saw them, they enjoyed them. Calling my a shitty filmer and a shitty skier then skiing off. "friends" telling me to send them all the footage then delete it so I can't make an edit which I feel is unfair to me. Being told all my edits are shitty and being told to quit and sometimes spraying my camera with snow on purpose.
D) 5 years but finally got kind of serious last year and really got a good setup this year
E) To be a action sports videographer (more specifically a ski and snowboard videographer) that is somewhat known among people in the industry.
F) Like how I'd want to be treated. That's how I was taught and how I see it.
Hope that answered those well enough.

I have dude but then I'm just constantly ridiculed again.

I mean obviously not if people still give you shit. Say fuck you with a smile on your face. Your gonna be fine. Work hard, and play harder. Your going to be fine.
what dude? You're last edit you put out made me want to start filming.
meet some dudes that can throw down at your hill and ask em if they'd be cool with you shooting em, no good skier will say no.
don't give up on something you enjoy doing because of others criticism, especially something you're actually good at.
Keep putting out content man, don't stop

It's not even criticism. It's them straight up telling me I can't do shit and the things I am able to do, I'm shit at. Like I personally thought the last edit I made was my best edit ever but when all 3 people in it have hated every edit I've made and told me I'm no long able to make any edits of them, it gets to a point of where, I'm just straight up throwing money away.

well these 3 guys have shit taste and aren't your friends, get rid of bad vibes; cause thats exactly what they are. dude, just put yourself out there and find someone to film. as long as they're not a shit they'll appreciate it.
What are your plans for the future? Do you always plan on skiing at your small mountain with dickheads? If you're 18 and a senior in high school are you planning on continuing your education? I promise if you keep practicing and go somewhere new you'll find someone who appreciates your talents.
Also that last edit you put out was sick and your cockboi little highschool friends need to get over themselves. Go find some good riders at Du Lac or Troll. Theres plenty of good shredders who would love to get shots like that
Dude fuck your friends. Youre the only way for them to expose themselves to the ski world. If theyre being dicks about it fuck them and film other people. Dont quit something you love just because your friends are being cocks about it. Fuck them they can make shitty gopro edits and when you find your groove and have a SICK crew making ill edits they'll wish they had you back. I would never ever go out of my way to film a person that wasnt grateful for what i produced. Fuck that noise.
this edit is pretty good dog
just follow your dreams, haters gon hate
Fuck themm dude!
Solitude has been one of my favorite "indie/not pro" edit of the year. so suave.
You just gotta do you.

That actually means a lot dude, thanks.
Damn dude, didn't know they were giving you that much shit. I muted that group conversation a long time ago. Your last edit was the best I've seen you make, and you have been improving so fast. Your glides are silky smooth and make me damn jealous. I would say to stick with it, and it will pay off! If they're not going to respect you, try filming some other people, or just take a few weeks off from filming to make things fun again. I always hate it when I just want to ski and I'm getting begged to film. Mix it up a bit and get back to the feeling of what made you love skiing in the first place. Feel free to always contact me!
Ben
Hey man just watched tour solitude edit. It was great! Loved the sound. You have a good eye for filming. Dont give up continue on! You got it man!
Don't quit. I just got started filiming and my friends and I all are terrible. I've gone through 6 camera grips this season and tried almost everything to make the edit I'm releasing better but that doesn't matter. I just have a great time getting clips with my friends no matter the outcome and if that's how you feel don't let some assholes stop ya.

this. better not quit you're just getting started. tell your so called friend to find someone else to film them
I would just film other people. They really arent good enough to treat people like that. If they were pro, or paying you, then ya maybe, but if your doing it for free then screw them.
I used to have a similar problem, all i ended up doing to correct it was filming a skier that was still good (but not near the same level as the other ones) purely because that individual respected me and was happy to have someone filming. even when i seen the better skiers, i would say hi and pretty much ignore them after that while i filmed the other guy. worked really well for me. maybe give it a try?
Good filmers arent common, when your friends arent putting out any content and noone is taking them seriously while the lesser skier is getting attention from your edits, they will eventually ask for your help. if they do, they can treat you with respect or you wont do shit for them. if they don't, well there are lots of people that are stoked to have a good filmer and "your friends" can go fuck themselves
dont give up something you love because as small sect of people are being assholes (especially the guys you are filming, they really arent good enough (1 4 out in your last edit? please that should be a standard trick, and they should be able to do it both ways). your filming level is beyond them (smooth glide cams, decent b roll, color, exposure etc is all good - your not perfect, but few people are, and you are better than being treated like that) find better people (even if they arent as skilled - filming is way more fun if your being appreciated
If you want to have any chance of surviving as an artist, you need to learn to simply not give a fuck what other people think.
lIllIIf you want to have any chance of surviving as an artist, you need to learn to simply not give a fuck what other people think.
Basically this.
If you don't love it go ahead, quit, this is not a business to be in if it isn't your passion, you sure aren't going to get rich doing it.
If you do love it and really care about it then yeah, block the haters:
Just realize that it is much more valuable to surround yourself with critical people than to search for those that only say yes and tell you how great you are. Mindless support never produced anything great, criticism does.

This is very valuable advice. This article sums it up well:

They are pretty good, not everyone in the group was in that edit since it was just a down day with chill shots. A few of them can throw doubles...
Thanks a lot

It was going far past criticism. Eheath gave me super hard criticism on it and I took everything he typed and wrote it down. From this group I was getting just hated on. I have no problem taking criticism.
CameraWizFrom this group I was getting just hated on. I have no problem taking criticism.
What difference does it make if you give up that easily?
Look, the world doesn't owe you kindness. Take that for what it is and do what you want to do. If you're going to let that stop you, nobody is going to sympathize with you.
Just stop filming your friends, film someone else, tell them to fuck off if they're going to be cunts. Find someone who skateboards and film them all summer or something, change it up.

Then suck that hate into your soul and use it to drive some crazy motivation.
(potentially rude thing I am about to say)
I guess really my beef with this thread is that it almost feels like your are being made fun of so you are coming to NS for us to tell you how much you don't suck and how mean your friends are. We get it, people are jerks a lot of the time, "art" is hard, working with athletes is hard, the problem comes when you take that hard stuff and use it as an excuse to quit or go looking for some internet affirmation. Instead it needs to drive you to prove them wrong, and not in some sniffly emotional way either. I don't care if the criticism is mean or non-constructive, I still stand by my earlier point, how many of the greats were told how awesome they were going to be all along the way? I remember Michael Jordan thanking everyone who doubted him, every coach who cut him, every jerk that made fun of him in his Hall of Fame acceptance speech. He came off as an ungrateful jerk but I think it revealed a truth about that kind of success.
Sorry, that last paragraph was probably mean and uncalled for. You probably aren't as whinny in real life as the impression I am getting and I am probably just an E-bully. I just think you have a lot of artistic potential in your edits but coming and crying to us is not going to solve anything, even though our praise might make you feel better in the short term.

I was actually looking at moving to hood for the summer

You gotta keep in mind a few things, ill share my personal experience.
I grew up in montana, had a great group of friends (still do) and we just filmed each other. I never really go into filming until i was in college and didn't really make anything that great for awhile, but the people I met and friends I made in college turned out to be fucking great skiers. I'm assuming since you're 18 you'll be going to college next fall? Or doing something? Going to hood is a good first step, but IMO the best thing to do is find some skier dudes, shred and film and go from there. Some of my friends really weren't that great when I met them.
I still can't believe your friends are so childish at this age, or are they younger? I could see this when someone is 14 but if I was 18 and my friends acted like yours id punch them in the throat.
I think the key to progressing in your filming is just moving on, trying something new and meeting new people, not to make a thread on NS about how shitty your friends are or make some scene that you're going to quit, equally as childish as your friends are being. Sorry if its harsh but you need to realize that everyones got problems and we all deal with them too.
tldr move on, fuck the world, do what you want.
Man up, stop being a lil bitch, you're a great fucking filmer and editor for that matter, have fun.
Well, fuck ur "friends" they should appreciate you making edits for them and investing probably a shit ton of money into filming. I feel the same way a lot, make edits for kids and they don't give a fuck. Or they ask me to make them one in a day and I don't get anything from it. Just move on from them and take a step into a different direction. Maybe film something for the mountain, covering all aspects of what it has to offer or something. Just don't quit filming homiE! That last edit was tight!
Those people you refer to as "friends" in here arent your friends. Fuck those guys. Do what you love, if you really love filming skiing find some more friendly skiers to film, who cares if they dont throw down hard. I used to film with my friends from high school and none of use could really throw down, we were just having fun making videos. And eventually I hooked up with new guys who can shred pretty hard, and by then I already had some pretty good filming skills from messing around.
Follow your passion and dont let anyone fuck with it
Also seeing as youre from Duluth like me just shred with us Lake effect guys. I see youve already skied with Ben and Drew some. Honestly dont think any of the guys in our crew give a shit how good you are at anything, we just all love shredding. We started out with pretty basic skills both in the skiing and video parts and pushed each other to progress.
Dude you are 18 and your 'friends' are probably just being douche bags who think they are hot shit because they are the best skiers at your small ski hill. You have two options, you can quit because you got shit from some kids in High School and grow up wishing you continued your passion or you can man up and keep pushing your craft and never have to live with that regret. I mean, someday you will be shooting out of Helicopters for Redbull Media in AK while your 'cool' friends are fixing furnaces.
I am not sure if you are looking at Colleges but pick a school near a bigger ski hill like someplace in CO or UT. You will meet a cool crew and they will be stoked as shit you are good at filming and you will get to ski all winter making dope edits and walk around campus doing rails when it snows.
Everyone takes shit in High School and once you graduate none of it means a damn thing. Even Matt Walker got crap growing up but instead of wussing out he dedicated himself to skiing and now he is a straight G and rides for Poor Boyz etc.
Definitely don't quit if it's your passion. Your "friends" are just idiots. Do you have a youtube channel or anything?
rsimpson34Do you have a youtube channel or anything?
Yeah, I do. http://www.youtube.com/nlightproductions
CameraWizYeah, I do. http://www.youtube.com/nlightproductions
Not a huge fan of the song in your latest video on there. But the videography was on point. And I fucking loved the audio you got out of your camera, all the stomps and rail/ski contact were super crisp.
