Download some Miles Davis, maybe a little Coltrane, see if you like the big band sound (like the buddy rich big band or something) or the smaller sound, and just sorta expand from there. Jazz is a huge genre so it's kinda hard to know where to start but start with basics and maybe go on pandora or something and find out what suites your tastes
My favourite jazz artist is easily Bill Evans, but also a fan of Miles Davis, Coltrane, Vince Guaraldi (does all the Charlie Brown stuff), Billie Holiday and definitely others I'm forgetting right now.

horace silver is the shit. he just died but his music is dope
My favorite record is Bitches Brew by Miles Davis
I would stick to the standards, or at least people who play them... This is mostly cool jazz or bebop.
Miles Davis, John Coltrane, P.J. Perry, Dizzy Gillespie, Thelonious Monk, Herbie Hancock, Charlie Parker, Dave Brubeck, Beuna Vista Social Club or Antonio Carlos Jobin (if you're into the latin feel), Oscar Peterson, Pat Metheny, Wynton Marsalis, Quincy Jones has some great old big band...
Honestly there is wayyy too much great jazz out there. Just wiki jazz standards or jazz legends and look up some of their music. Its usually dirt cheap for giant collections on iTunes or easy to torrent.
I'm just not a huge fan of some modern jazz, and the real "smooth jazz" (aka porno jazz).
Can't embed, but The Robert Digweed Collective is awesome, and fairly new!

If you travel to their Bandcamp they have their album, and two full length remix albums by underground hip hop producers. Quite smooth in my opinion.
+1 to all the recommendations everyone has made so far, and add Jim Hall to that list.
