Lay of the bottle JLev. I don't mind seeing an add on NS. I know the company's money is going to a good source and NS can be made better.

I'd rather see this community support itself & not have to rely on unrelated adverstising. We create the content, why not create the financing? Public radio has done it for decades for this same reason.
the only thing that sucks more than the Toyota adds is cloggin up ski gabber whining about them
will a cyber nanny move site discussion gabber to the site discussion wasteland
I'm so down for that. If NS needs to make money I don't want it coming from fucking Toyota and Dodge and shit. I'd definitely buy a subscription, this site is worth it.

Good points, although how often do Toyota adds really pop up for people? I've never even received on, I only get those really short B-roll edits by Line and ON3P which I think are great fun to watch.

damn dude... you're pretty lucky then 'cause I have to watch a 30 second Toyota add, THE SAME 30 SECOND TOYOTA ADD, every single fucking time I watch a video. also there's a toyota add on my screen right now. I'm sick of it.
Inb4 someone says "just use adblocker" and gets comment raped
yeah im freaking sick of those ads. Epically if you want to replay a video you have to fucking re-watch the same damn add again! I get stoked when people put the vimeo link in the descriptions... clicking that right away

Your an idiot. Public radio has ADS that pay them money to advertise constantly. NS should get more ads to make more $. The Toyota vid isn't that bad man
It already has school in the name so we can pretend it is and education website and all the kids parents will gladly pay for it.
KravtZYour an idiot. Public radio has ADS that pay them money to advertise constantly. NS should get more ads to make more $. The Toyota vid isn't that bad man
not all the time. usually it's funded through pledge drives, donations (corporate and people), and sometimes underwriting, which means yes it's an ad but not in a form like that video, instead a company pays for a mention that they supported it and it doesn't go beyond that, there's no true ad, no talk or claims about products, etc., just "this segment brought to you by kravtz industries."
not that public radio is a good model for NS to follow..just sayin, if youre going to say "his an idiot" then you might as well be right
ive always thought it would make more sense for NS to operate as it does, but with the option to buy a membership which eliminates the ads. also you could buy it for other people like on reddit. seems like a win win to me. on the other hand, yeah who cares. that toyota ad is annoying though and definitely reduces the number of videos i watch, and why has it run so long? get some new content sheesh. no it's not a big deal but guess what, online activity is determined by second to second decisions and impulses. it's NS' and toyota's loss if they can't cater to that well enough

The part which surprises me all the time is how little video viewership drops even during an ad campaign like this. It is negligible. AdBlock rates go up a few percent, but that's about it.
The more people have been talking about a sub model the more it makes sense to me as an option.
J - $5 / year wouldn't even come close to covering the lost revenue from a core member not watching ads. Not even in the neighborhood.
It'd need to be monthly... so say like $2.99 / month for reduced ads and $7.99 for ad free. Maybe there's year-long bundles where if you buy 6 months in winter you get the additional 6 months of summer for only 50% of the price or something.

oh don't get me wrong, i wouldn't make the claim that on the big scale video viewership goes down too much. but i do wonder if they would start to drop if ads like this were present for prolonged periods
i'm just saying that personally ive def watched fewer vids recently. and that's my choice, and not a huge deal, but you know what bugs me the most about it? that that same video is still playing. i think that's the most annoying part about any of the less favorable ads that have been on this site, that they are around for weeks or months. seems like a serious lack of prowess by the advertisers and somewhat of a waste of their money to show the same freakin ad for so long
re: sub fees, hm well that's interesting. 8 bucks a month for no ads actually doesn't sound worth it. maybe you should keep the system as is but reward us for our service to our corporate overlords by trying to keep shitty long commercials like the toyota one infrequent :)

same for me. Watching an add every single time is ridiculous. I recognize the necessity of ads, but I feel like ads should only play once every 15 minutes or once for every 4 videos or something - that wouldn't be a difficult thing to implement. I'll click away every time I have to watch a 2nd 30 second ad in a row because creating that statistic is the only vote that really matters.

Saying that is like England before 1776 saying "What surprises me, is that we keep taxing the american colonies and they haven't broken away from us yet. The unrest is almost negligible. Smuggling goes up, but that's about it."
Just because the adds haven't reached the critical point where there's a drastic change in viewership doesn't mean that its a good idea to keep pushing towards that critical point.

What price would it be worth it to you? And not just like bullshit... I'm talking you would actually throw your credit card down tomorrow and sign up for real. Is there a price?
Every time we ask this question people usually just say "more ads please".

Believe me both of you - its well known on our end that we have to work towards a change. This is unsustainable, and I know it. This can't keep happening.
The problem is these massive campaigns dropping in like nukes. They're great for us financially, but they blot out the sun compared to the other stuff. When we have a nice mix of skiing-focused pre-rolls its pretty rad. That is what we want.
This comes from a corporate level, where all the other websites are content ones only. So a Powder viewer isn't on there every day, they just zip in from facebook, watch one video and leave. Then they go to be pissed about ads everywhere on the internet.
I think we've put some policies in place that will help cut this issue down in the future. We're working on any ads over 15 seconds requiring a skip, as well as better ways to target so that you can watch a couple of shorter vids with only one ad.
I am really sorry about this BTW. I know we continuously get it wrong, and we're working on it.
i don't really mind the ads at all, under a few conditions.
1. it's definitely annoying to watch a 30 second add for a video that's 30 seconds or less. but it's been talked about so whatever
2. is there some way to get rid of an ad if you're just trying to replay the video? sometimes when i (want to) watch a short video multiple times, the video ends and the ad starts once i attempt to replay it. that's super annoying.
that all being said though, it's 30 seconds. it's not 45, or a minute, it's a microscopic fragment of your time. it's annoying, but it's not nearly as bad as it's made out to be, especially when the content is free.

hm, i don't know. 8 sounds too rich for my blood (i'm poor) but 5 sounds reasonable. idk enough about ad rates to know where the number would have to be for it to be worth it for you guys. it's rather complex, though, given that i add to the content of this site to some degree by being a knowledgeable NS scholar and answering skiing questions whenever i can.
but on the other hand, i get so much out of this site that ive never paid for beyond donating back in the day. i check it every hour at work all week.. so i can only complain so much in good conscience. you especially do a phenomenal job of listening to people and considering their comments-- absolutely no need for you to apologize at all. i trust that you'll find a good compromise regarding these kinds of ads. thanks man, keep up the good work
danbrown2. is there some way to get rid of an ad if you're just trying to replay the video? sometimes when i (want to) watch a short video multiple times, the video ends and the ad starts once i attempt to replay it. that's super annoying.
We're working on that. There is a player upgrade that is coming out today which is a good base to help deal with this. It might not fix it right off the bat, but its more modifiable than the last one and will allow us to tweak these types of things.

We have actually been toying around with the idea of the Karma system earning you bonus credits like this. So you're a super helpful member, you can earn a free months subscription - or whatever. Like Airline status miles.
Karma system isn't perfect though, so I can't say this would be launching anytime soon.
End the Toyota ads when they stop paying. The way I see it you guys are basically a commercial platform to sell ads. It's awesome that you guys have been able to utilize this as a way to deliver content that we actually want to see. Hopefully the desire to keep filling up the add space will keep the good content coming. I receive print media like skiing and snowboarding magazine in the mail all the time for free. About 1/2 of the pages in the last issue of SKI mag are one huge ad for Deer Valley. No way I will buy SKI but somehow they know I'll end up reading the Deer Valley ad if a SKI rag ends up in my mail box.

Wasn't there talk about a special subscription service for ns? So everything that is here now stays free, but if you pay the 18 bucks a year you get a special newsletter/ new product or whatever. You could even make it 25 bucks a year so you make a bit of profit for the effort. I would pay if you made it worth it.

Sorry for dub post, but seeing bishops above post made me realise 3 bucks a month wont cut it. 5 would be perfectly reasonable, and if we got a buy 6 get 6 months free deal for the summer, id definitely go for it. Then for $30-40 a year( depending on whether it is just ads, or you get that new subscription thing we were talking about earlier.)

At this point its nothing more than pondering.
It just used to be that whenever this came up absolutely everyone said "fuck that I'll just watch ads" but it seems like some of the tides are turning a bit.
Its important to note that if we were taking subscriptions from people, this revenue would be directly shared with the people making the content. So you could know that you'd be half giving back to NS and half giving to the people making content.
Maybe we could do 60/40 in their favor depending on how much it would cost to build/host all of it.
@Bishop
implement an affiliate marking program with Backcountry, REI, etc. The fact that you guys don't already have one is ridiculous. Make it public so that NS'ers know its not trickery (just be careful not to violate the TOS with the affiliate).
You could even TASTEFULLY use link injection when users mention a specific product (this means either only using exact tokenized matching on products or having mods manually make links). Or even better allow users to add products (hook into the review system) to thread posts.
If you get big enough, companies like backcountry will even offer exclusive deals and products to NS members.
Affiliate marketing has potential to generate WAY more money than adds if done correctly. I worked for a crap website that pulled in half a mill annually in its prime.
In a industry that is so focused around having the latest and greatest, you guys are really missing out. TGR is already ahead of you guys but there implementation is still not using their full potential.
Like I've said in the past (about the crap search bar), I'm available for moonlight consulting.

We already do this to a pretty large extent. Look through the entire gear guide, and notice the affiliate link encoders from multiple sources running all across the site.
Trust me when I say:
1) I REALLY know affiliate marketing.
2) I recognize that we have room to grow in this area.
3) You'd be really lucky to get 10% of the revenue out of affiliate marketing as advertising.
In a wild world where we become the single most premier spot on the entire internet for gear I wouldn't imagine affiliate making up more than 20%.
That all being said, email me - mr.bishop@newschoolers.com - I'd love to hear some ideas.
just skipped the no man's land ad 5 seconds in... ohhhhhh yeah

sent. probably nothing revolutionary in there. Just how I would approach it if I ran NS.
I'd prefer native advertising in news and forums over a video ad that prevents me from watching content for 30 seconds.

Awesome man! I'll definitely hit you up and we can both post our findings here.
One thing to note, the Affiliate Nexus tax really hit hard. Since NS is located in California legally, and TEN (our parent company) has offices around America, most affiliates have really scaled back their programs.
Anyway - gear is a great opportunity here and hopefully you and me can cook up some ideas to get some rev out of this shit.

oh shit, I remember hearing about that back when i was working but it hadn't happened yet. Thats a bummer.
Variety in ads would be nice, its like those damn vitamin water ads, they weren't that bad but jesus i can only watch so fucking many for like a 30 second clip...
I dont get any ads beacuse they are all blocked on my school computer :D i say we all just get firewalls.
Can't we just go back to double pits to chesty. That ad was glorious.
WHY ON EARTH WOULD YOU EVEN WANT A NEW FOUR RUNNER, THEY LOOK STUPID AND UGLY AS SHIT. AND IM SURE THERE WAY TOO MUCH MONEY, CERTAIN THEY HVAE AN EXPIRATION DATE AS WELL. GET AN '85 YOTA THEYLL LAST FOREVER AND THERE TEN TIMES COOLER
I have a feeling making people pay monthly for Newschoolers will greatly limit the amount of users in this site. A lot of people just come on to fuck around, post a little, maybe watch a video and get off. I have a feeling people won't want to bother if they had to pay.
Personally, I say bring on the 30 second just as long it isn't the same damn one over and over

Cultrara actually nabbed an interview with the CEO of Toyota.
Sooooo I didn't want to make a new thread to say this, but I am SO STOKED that there are company ads on videos now. I'll never get tired of the Next Friday teaser ad. I love it.
this may make you guys angry but I've never had a toyota add on here in my life.
