How many NSers have torn their ACL? I torn mine about a month ago and am having surgery this coming Thursday. Which is worse, the time before surgery or after surgery? I know I have to do a ton of physical therapy which I will do because I want to ski by mid febuary.
Tore mine in Dec. Surgery in March, coming up on 4 months out in a week. After surgery wasn't painful for me. I just hated not being able to do anything for 3 weeks. I was walking around before surgery, tryin to bike and keep the knee strong.
Most important thing is to just do what the PT tells you and nothing more. Enjoy the little wins like being able to take a shit with a bent leg, driving a car, taking a shower, etc.

Tore mine a few years back.
Surgery was ok, but the first few days after were rough. Problems sleeping, and then when I did, I'd suffer the sweats. I'd have to get up a couple times a night to put clean sheets on, I was sweating so much. Supposedly it was my body dealing with the drugs in my system.
Lots of PT, and I was able to ski exactly 6 months after surgery.
Good luck, and stay away from the pain pills if you can.

Definitely this. Only took 3 pills to go to sleep during the first 2 nights. If you don't feel pain, don't just take them because you've got em.
Partially tore mine then completely ruptured it. It sucked. I chose not to have the surgery so I don't really have any advice about that. But I had to do a ton of physical therapy. It wasn't the most fun time I've ever had but it's super important. Wait till you're cleared for certain activities and once you're cleared make an effort to do those things. It'll get you back into things a lot faster. Also after you're considered "fully recovered" keep your legs in shape. Even if you aren't in any sports, you want them to be strong so you don't tear it again by slipping weird or something avoidable.
Also, I'm surprised not many people mention it but eating healthy will help a ton. Good luck with your surgery. Hope everything goes well and you have a quick recovery!
I blew my left knee in february then got surgery in march, it has really fucked my summer thus far.
Left ACL and Meniscus a year and 3 months ago. After surgery sucked more than before but I was un weight bearing for 6 weeks so lots of sitting around with fuck all to do. If you focus on the physio you will be back before you know it.
it all hurts. get a creative outlet that doesn't require you using your knees, like painting, making music, or something of that nature.
i'm like 6-7 months post op and my knee feels stronger than ever before can't wait to ski this season i missed the whole of the last one
Hit a rock skiing snowbird at the top of baldy. The worst part about everything (surgery, rehab, etc) was hiking 50ft through powder to get my ski. I was in a no-fall zone and clipped a rock at high speed.
I tore my ACL 4/4/14. First few weeks were tough, then once I was able to get on a bike, pre-habbing it was the best thing. The better you go in, the better you are on the other side. I worked my ass off in the gym to get it looking good and almost as strong before surgery.
I got surgery on 5/22/14. First few days sucked. Make sure to get the nerve block, that does wonders. it was a struggle to get around, your knee is the size of a balloon. It starts to get better after the first week. Make sure to take your meds.
Tomorrow, 5/17/14, I'll be eight weeks post op. I've been working my ass off in PT, and have already done some mountain bike rides. Certainly you need to be careful and do what your PT says.
Looking to be back on the slopes (taking it easy) for opening day.
I tore my left ACL and meniscus back in 10' and had surgery. I never felt like my knee was back to the point pre surgery even though I spent almost everyday doing PT. I skied the whole season this year with a DonJoy knee brace, but even though I did that my knee kept locking itself in place.
When I returned home from my season I got a new scan and it showed that my ACL was almost torn again, and that my LCL was "getting soft" because the doctors made mistakes in the first surgery. Last tuesday i got a new surgery reconstructing my ACL and LCL and removing 80 % of my inner meniscus.
I find the time after surgery most frustrating because you feel so helpless, and there is litterally nothing to. But when you hit the 3 weeks post surgery you can start on indoor biking, and from there the recovery speeds up.

Thanks man! Surgery went fine for me this morning and I did indeed get a nerve block. I don't know why you wouldn't, the thing is magical. I am now waiting for it to wear off so I can start on the normal pain drugs. I am posted up in bed right now and have my first PT appointment tomorrow, mainly just a evaluation though.
Wrong fourm buddy, go to recovery fourms
