And this is why Andy Samberg is so awesome.
FlyonFuck EDM, UK Bass for life.
What?
Yeah fuck edm. Real instruments on real stages on real people.
I fuckin loved that haha
especially "this is music"
Lost when the kid exploded. Was not expecting that at all.
EDM is the worst thing to exist since the Limp Bizkit rap-rock of the 90's.
The EDM "Scene", and rave culture, and PLUR and all that is horseshit if you ask me. However, there are sections of EDM I do enjoy. Such as this. ASOT (A State of Trance) is so good.

lol not at all, but nice try though.

Some of the music in that side of the spectrum I don't mind. But the DJ's that don't really even create the music they play and just hit buttons on stage kinda piss me off. Some electronic music and even mashups are really well done and takes some talent to put together. Not a huge fan of the rave culture either but that's probably because I don't do drugs or "understand it"
Yes dj's don't do as much as people in a band on stage. But that is the nature of the gig. To become popular they still have to put time and effort into the production of songs that will become popular.
And yes, I agree that big room progressive house is a bit ridiculous with the constant drops that all sound the same. That's why you avoid certain djs (in my opinion like harwell's new stuff and others).
But then again there is a lot of good edm out there. Like said above trance is good, deep house is good, progressive house without huge drops is good. You cant hate on the face that DJs don't do a lot on stage because that is just the way it's done--you can't produce their music on stage live, its just not possible.

Its associated scene notwithstanding, hip-hop is an infinitely more respectable form of music than EDM, and I say this as someone who hates hip-hop.
p.s. I'd rather deal with materialistic needle-dicked rappers than obnoxious college kids on molly any day of the week.
EDM sucks dick, and your music taste is terrible if you like it. Most EDM is recycled garbage that rips off whatever is popular in the scene. I went to an EDM concert because my friends wanted to, and it was such a disappointment. I can't remember the name of the Dj's playing, but my friend who's big on EDM said they were some of the hottest guys in the scene, but they fucking sucked. If you need MDMA just to enjoy the music, you need to listen to something else.

I should also append a disclaimer: 90% of every genre of music (art, actually) is complete garbage. Exceptions always exist.
sammykyou can't produce their music on stage live, its just not possible.
Wrong.
I fucking hate the term EDM. All it does is generalize all electronic music into the category of mindless festival bangers and Steve Aoki. There is so much incredible electronic music to be found, you just have to look past (most) of the mainstage of Ultra and TomorrowLand. Go on soundcloud and look around for a bit, and you will find great tracks that took a lot of talent to make.

Pretty much this.

Scene here in the UK is exploding like there's no tomorrow. Chris Lorenzo's touring the US at the moment and It's going down a storm by the looks of things. Techno was born in Detroit and House in Chicago but Europe's producers doing a hell of a job with what they're turning out at the moment.
Big room house sounds so samey and personally I'm not a fan.

Grime's making a huge resurgence, too
Also, the 130 sound is blowing up insanely quick over there, quite exciting
Better than listening to ppl rhyme to shitty music.

this is pretty much where I'm at. all the EDM plugs I know started taking it just at these shows to enjoy the music more. It's fucking dumb, if you need to alter your state of mind just to enjoy the music you paid $100+ to see / hear live, something's wrong.
Some electronic music is great (adventure club and porter robinson are basically the only "EDM" I'll listen to), and some DJ's actually do mix live, like porter.
but whatever really, to each their own I guess
I hate everyone that goes to those concerts. Global dub was just held at redrocks and i think that they should just ban all fuking edm shit because it is a classy place for real musicians

This is a bomb song. AVB is really good.
It's all about preference. There are lots of types of EDM, and some appeal to different people. I don't go to the concerts because that's not my scene but I love listening to trance/house music while studying or driving.
That Aoki song that was posted was just awful. Not a big Aoki fan.

If you were at a concert that wasn't EDM and had the opportunity to do something (say, eat a sandwich) that would cause you to enjoy the music more, would you? Let me try this: if you were hanging out with your friends and you had the opportunity to ingest something (alcohol) to enjoy yourselves, would you? It's not that the music isn't enjoyable to those people without the drugs. The drugs heighten the experience, the same way people go to Dead and Phish stoned (to quote a stereotype).
Disclaimer: highly idealized. I don't go to shows or do the drugs. People may go just to do drugs, but I think it's unfair to make that generalization for all.

Personally, I wouldn't (don't drink or do drugs, inb4 what a pussy), but hey I'm not judging them as people or anything. I just think the fact that they can spend their whole lives going to shows sober and having a great time, but as soon as its EDM all of a sudden they need drugs to enjoy it seems weird to me.
And it definitely isn't everyone, I shouldn't have said everyone you're right, I know some people who are actually fans of the music and respect the talent some of these artists have and don't need drugs to enjoy the show. Those people are few and far between though in my experience
that video was fucking great though
i honestly dont understand why people get all asspained over someone liking EDM or its culture. its no different than you liking a certain type of genre. guess what? if you people dont like it, dont fucking listen to it. not that hard of a concept to grasp, really.

No offense, but if you don't like the music, you're probably not going to find the people who are actually fans. Additionally, how do you know your friends need the drugs? Did they tell you that the music sucks otherwise?
I'm not saying that everyone who likes EDM (in some form) likes it for the musical quality, because a lot of it sucks. But people don't just listen to it to do drugs, and the people who do use drugs aren't unique. People go to concerts of all types and genres and get fucked up. The only way that this genre is different is that there are a lot of artists with really similar sounds and that the drugs of choice are pretty isolated to this scene.
You can think whatever you want of the people who listen to EDM. However, it's not fair to write off the music because of the people who give it a bad name.

In all honesty I used to be a huge EDM fan, listened to everything (progressive house, big room, hardstyle, dnb, whatever). It's only been the past few years that I've found its become incredibly repetitive and seemingly uninspired in my opinion.
I'm mostly just making the inference that they need the drugs at these shows because they never need them at other shows, just seems weird to me. You could definitely say I'm making an unfair assumption, and I really wouldn't be able to argue with you it's just the way it appears to me.
I'm not writing off the genre as a whole, there's tons of EDM that I used to really love and will still listen to on occasion. Some electronic music is unreal, but a vast majority of the more "popular" songs I hear lately are pretty brutal imo

Word.
I think the points I'm trying to make are these:
- Drugs at concerts aren't unique, and
- Though the music is linked to the "scene" it's unfair to generalize the music as shitty because you don't like the scene or people in it.
I said it earlier, a lot of EDM sucks, but so does music in lots of other genres. The shitty, repetitive music just comes to the surface because it's relatively bland and is enjoyable (not orgasmic or inspiring) to lots of people, and those people are the ones who will spend money for it. Kind of like how when you buy a ski boot there's no footbed, only the shitty thin insert, even though almost everyone has an arch. It's sold to fit everybody.
plyswthsqrrlsa vast majority of the more "popular" songs I hear lately are pretty brutal imo
This is true for any genre - more specifically, a grossly oversimplified and arbitrary categorization of art.
I listen to a lot of rock music, but when people ask if I like rock music, I tell them "no" because the vast majority of rock music is fucking terrible to me (ACDC, metal, anything from the 80's, etc.).
Likewise, the "electronic" label is pointless and at most is meant to be taken with a grain of salt. Otherwise you lump Boards of Canada into the same category as Skrillex. Where's the sense in that?
EDM is fun at the right time, like parties and stuff like that. also, a show every now and then is fun, mainly because of the drugs / booze. do i think the DJs should get paid as much as they do? no, but it's fun music

Ribss.Wrong.
no shit you can but the songs that they produce beforehand could not be produced on stage live. too complex for on stage production
