Camping in the Fort Collins/Loveland Area

I am heading out to Cheyenne/Fort Collins/Denver for a wedding and a small vacation. I am looking for a place to camp for a night that is somewhere near where I can park but not a total "car camping" spot (KOA etc). I have camped in west of Fort Collins before but that was a scout camp. Not having amenities doesn't bother me, I've camped/hiked in the mountains before. Whether its free or not doesn't matter. Many of you may say "just google it" but I've done that and cannot really get a grip on a place. It's either a KOA spot or a complete backpacking trip free spot.

Any ideas?

It's a little bit of a drive but pingree park is awesome, you can pretty much camp wherever you want and there's lots of small roads/trails that branch off the main one so you can get plenty secluded.

You can get there by going up the poudre canyon or a shorter way is to go up rist canyon and through stove prairie, then to old flowers road. But only if it's open and your cars good offroad. Old flowers road is awesome for camping off of.

Or drive up through and past horsetooth lake on 27, turn off a couple miles before the T in the road at stove prarie, onto buckhorn road (44 I think) it's a smooth dirt road, take that for awhile and start looking for spots. Eventually it'll connect into pingree.

If your cars offroad capable go up moody hill trail just a couple miles after you turn onto buckhorn, and camp at the top.

Red feathers another place that's decent.

Sick dude, thanks for the help. I drive a Ram 1500 so Off road capabilities won't be a problem at all. I'll look them up.

Also, this might be a noob question but I can just pull off of Old Flowers road or a road in Pingree park and camp?

Pretty much, now that I think about it, with how much snow the area's gotten, i doubt old flowers is open yet. but pingree is open year round, at least the main road, and yeah, you can pretty much just pull off and camp anywhere, there's plenty of trails that branch out off the main road that you can take.

come in from the poudre canyon side and just drive around till something looks good.
